L'histoire africaine était née, au terme d'une recherche scientifique harassante mais riche en perspectives humaines, conduite avec désintéressement, dans la solitude, pendant dix ans, au milieu d'épreuves de toutes sortes, recherche qui fut couronnée par un doctorat d'Etat ès lettres en Sorbonne. Son originalité fut rapidement reconnue. Depuis ce fracassant instant de rupture épistémologique d'avec les cartons ethnographiques et les œillères de l'histoire africaniste, superficielle et anecdotique, le cadre général d'idées et de connaissances défini et dressé par le professeur Cheikh Anta Diop devenait bientôt, pour les jeunes chercheurs africains, une assurance et une incitation au travail. Toute comptabilité bien faite, Cheikh Anta Diop apparaît, dès le départ, comme le véritable inventeur, de nos jours, de l'histoire africaine. L'Afrique Noire pré-coloniale se veut un livre de \"sociologie historique africaine\", et le prouve; les problèmes majeurs développés dans cet ouvrage (analyse de la notion de caste, économies, États, idéologies, techniques et sciences de l'Afrique ancienne, etc.) ont connu, grâce au travail récent de jeunes universitaires africains, des prolongements heureux. Cependant, il reste, pour sûr, des \"territoires\" non encore explorés mais qu'il faudra étudier, ardemment, à la suite du maître. La comparaison de l'évolution socio-politique de l'Europe et de l'Afrique, de l'Antiquité aux Temps Modernes, et, surtout, aussi, le problème, épineux, complexe, d'un haut intérêt scientifique et humain, des migrations primaires et de l'ethnogenèse des peuples actuels de l'Afrique devront faire l'objet d'études plus approfondies. Tout cela qui requiert une interdisciplinarité vivante par l'emploi croisé de l'archéologie, la linguistique diachronique, la tradition orale, l'anthropologie culturelle, sans négliger l'apport des sciences naturelles et physicochimiques. Et, toujours, selon la rigueur exemplaire du professeur Cheikh Anta Diop dont l'influence intellectuelle sur les études africaines sérieuses par les Africains reste indestructible.
