Murnau's 1922 film is not played by an actor but by a vampire. In the film business, this metaphor—the actor-as-star-as-vampire, needing fresh blood and being paid in unknowing victims—is not so far fetched. In Shadow of the Vampire, Murnau's ruthlessness in sacrificing his leading lady to his vampire-actor for heightened artistic effect is shown as equal to the vampire's lust for blood. The vampire movie is like a Faustian pact, whether entered into out of world-weary longing for youth, love, and eternal life or out of a search for truth, beauty, and the perfection of artifice by ambitious artists or mad scientists.",

Before Sartre, Bergson was already interested in pure (inhuman) experience \"above that decisive turn, where, taking a bias in the direction of our utility, it becomes properly human experience'\" (Deleuze, Bergsonism 27). Deleuze confirms that human intelligence is bound to reduce differences in kind to differences in degree and that the former are rediscovered only \"above the turn\" in the examination of the conditions of experience by intuition:\n\nTo open us up to the inhuman and the superhuman (durations which are inferior or superior to our own), to go beyond the human condition: This is the meaning of philosophy, in so far as our condition condemns us to live among badly analyzed composites and to be badly analyzed composites ourselves.\n\n(ibid., 28)\n\nDeleuze's task in the two volumes of Cinema is to demonstrate how modern cinema in particular has made it possible to surpass the human condition by abolishing subjectivity as a privileged image in what Bergson calls \"the aggregate of images\" (the material world).\n\nBergson's theory of duration, of the contemporaneousness of perception and memory, is based on his analysis of the phenomenon of deja vu, which he considers the most authentic expression of the true nature of our",

There is no longer a clear conceptual distinction between original and reproduction in virtually any medium. These two states, one pure and original, the other imitative and impure, are now fictions. Images, sounds, and words are received, deconstructed, rearranged, and restored wherever they are seen, heard, and stored. What has happened to the aura surrounding the original work of art, so prized by generations of collectors and critics? Digitalization transfers this aura to the individuated copy. Artist and viewer perform together. The dead replica and the living, authentic original are merging, like lovers entwined in mutual ecstasy.",
