this cohort. Existing studies have tended to\nuse quantitative methods, which do not focus on the subjective experiences of participants. The\nlatter can help contribute towards helping those in power to better assist food insecure (FI)\nuniversity students, and thus require examination.\nThis research seeks to explore food experiences among students living in residence at the\nUniversity of the Western Cape (UWC). A mixed methodology (quantitative and qualitative)\nwas selected for this study. Along with general demographic information obtained about the\nparticipants, various issues such as student’s experiences of hunger, their coping strategies,\neating patterns, food preferences and attitudes toward receipt of food aid and other\ninterventions, were investigated.\nAn assessment of the safety nets available and how students react to them can provide a more\ncomprehensive understanding of how meaning is attached to food in this cohort. The\ntheoretical framework used to help interpret the reasoning and motivation behind behavioural\nadaptations (coping strategies), is broadly informed by the work of Pierre Bourdieu and his\nconcept, ‘social capital’.\nThe study found that hunger was widespread on campus and the majority of the sample had\nexperienced it at some stage during the year (2015). There is a relationship between receipt of\nfinancial aid and food insecurity and the food vouchers received by NFSAS students alleviate\nhunger among university students. Students resort to various coping mechanisms when they\nare confronted with hunger and food shortages and the most commonly used strategy entails \niii\nasking friends for help. Bourdieu’s notion of social capital helps shed light on the benefits of\ncultivating relationships and making connections – in this instance, been assisted with food.\nThe study also found that despite the view that the university should assist students who are\nfood insecure, the ‘stigma’ associated with receipt of thereof persists among the participants.\nFinally, some recommendations
