            "abstractNote": "Objective\nThis study investigated causal factor of perceptual failure and possible countermeasure of crossing path crashes at clear-sighted unsignalised intersections.Background\nCrossing path crashes involving two vehicles at intersections are a common and serious problem, and perceptual failure has been identified as a predominant causal factor. Previous studies have showed that late detection of a crossing vehicle frequently occurs even when there are no visual obstructions, at such as rural intersections.Method\nWith using a fixed-based driving simulator, three experiments were performed to investigate a driver's ability to detect a periphery presented cross traffic while approaching an intersection. In Experiment 1, drivers' ability to detect crossing vehicles in their peripheral field of view was studied, both in conditions of vehicles following a collision and a non-collision trajectory. In Experiment 2, we examined whether abrupt appearance of a vehicle on collision course would improve detection performance. In Experiment 3, we tested potential of collision warning, if it affects voluntary visual scanning, improving the detection performance regarding hazards cross traffic.Results\nThe results of Experiment 1 showed that vehicles on collision course vehicles were detected late. This suggested that the late detection could be related to the lack of motion visible in the peripheral view. In Experiment 2, it was found that abrupt appearance effect (\"pop-up\" from road side occluding furniture) improves detection performance of a crossing vehicle. The results of Experiment 3 demonstrated that cross traffic collision warnings were beneficial for preventing late detection responses by means of encouraging voluntary visual scanning.Conclusion\nLess attention attractive visual properties of hazardous cross traffic attributed to mutual approaching course can cause recognition failure. Drivers' gaze shift to potential conflicting direction, either reflective or voluntary manner, is crucially important for preventing crossing path crashes at such as rural intersections.",

In the survey, each driver answered a cognitive information processing flowchart of his/her driving behaviors when entering a non-signalized intersection. Concretely, they answered when and where they confirm the existence of crossing cars, how they operate the accelerator, the brake pedal and so on. We extracted 15 inner factors that make deviations from desirable driving behavior and revealed the relationships between these inner factors and eight elements of driving behavior.             "abstractNote": "The collection of data from a driving simulator before participants are fully adapted to the system can lead to erroneous and incomplete conclusions. In most studies that involve a driving simulator, researchers try to manipulate a cause and then measure the effect, that is, a driver's reaction. However, participants need time to adapt and transfer their already existing driving skills to the simulator. The process of adaptation, or skill transfer, imposes a mental load on participants that can distract them from performing the primary task, that is, driving. Therefore, before adaptation, a participant's reaction may not be representative of real-life behavior, which potentially reduces the validity of the research. In the present study, the performance of subjects doing a repetitive cornering task is traced and the different patterns of adaptation and skill transfer to the driving simulator are studied. The results show interesting characteristics of the adaptation process, including power curve fit to the learning phase and the observation of a plateau period, in which performance stops improving before it restarts. The participants were also asked to report at what point they felt adapted to the simulator while taking the test. The self-reported times were compared with the results of quantitative analysis of their performance. The results showed that self-reported values were significantly lower than the actual adaptation time, with an insignificant correlation between self-reported values and actual values occurring.",

            "abstractNote": "The use of driving simulation for vehicle design and driver perception studies is expanding rapidly. This is largely because simulation saves engineering time and costs, and can be used for studies of road and traffic safety. How applicable driving simulation is to the real world is unclear however, because analyses of perceptual criteria carried out in driving simulation experiments are controversial. On the one hand, recent data suggest that, in driving simulators with a large field of view, longitudinal speed can be estimated correctly from visual information. On the other hand, recent psychophysical studies have revealed an unexpectedly important contribution of vestibular cues in distance perception and steering, prompting a re-evaluation of the role of visuo-vestibular interaction in driving simulation studies.",

            "abstractNote": "This study investigated the control strategies and decision making of drivers who were executing overtaking maneuvers in a fixed-base driving simulator. It was found that drivers were frequently inaccurate in deciding whether it was safe to overtake in front of an oncoming vehicle. One source of error in this situation was the control strategy adopted by the driver; in several instances our drivers initiated an overtaking maneuver when the oncoming car's distance was above a critical value, even though there was not sufficient time to complete a safe maneuver. Adaptation to closing speed (produced by driving on a straight open road) also had large effects on overtaking behavior. For all participants, closing speed adaptation resulted in decisions that were delayed, of higher risk, and more variable. Actual or potential applications of this research include improved training for younger drivers and the development of in-car interfaces that reduce closing speed adaptation.",

One of the key modules in the architecture, driver decision making module, is discussed in details under various traffic scenarios. Process flow diagrams that are built in the decision making module for various decision making processes at both unsignalized and signalized intersections are also presented. This human driver model can be used not only for simulating human driver response, but also for autonomous vehicle's decision making in the intersection area. A left-turning scenario at an unsignalized intersection was simulated by applying the proposed driver decision process flow diagram. Driver's behavior was mimicked and safe vehicle operations were demonstrated.",

When one models drivers as continuous controllers, the discrete nature of drivers' control actions is lost and with it an important component for characterizing behavioral variability. A proposal is made for the use of cognitive architectures for developing models of driver behavior that integrate cognitive and perceptual-motor processes in a serial model of task and attention management. A cognitive architecture is a computational framework that incorporates built-in, well-tested parameters and constraints on cognitive and perceptual-motor processes. All driver models implemented in a cognitive architecture necessarily inherit these parameters and constraints, resulting in more predictive and psychologically plausible models than those that do not characterize driving as a multitasking activity. These benefits are demonstrated with a driver model developed in the ACT-R cognitive architecture. The model is validated by comparing its behavior to that of human drivers navigating a four-lane highway with traffic in a fixed-based driving simulator. Results show that the model successfully predicts aspects of both lower-level control, such as steering and eye movements during lane changes, and higher-level cognitive tasks, such as task management and decision making. Many of these predictions are not explicitly built into the model but come from the cognitive architecture as a result of the model's implementation in the ACT-R architecture.",

            "abstractNote": "Novice drivers (16-year-olds with < or = 6 months' driving experience) have the highest crash involvement rates per 100 million vehicle miles (161 million vehicle km). In the past, this was attributed to greater risk taking or poorly developed psychomotor skills. More recently, however, their high crash involvement rate has been hypothesized to be attributable largely to their relative inability to acquire and assess information in inherently risky situations. The current study seeks to evaluate this hypothesis by recording eye movements while 72 participants (24 novice drivers, 24 younger drivers, and 24 older drivers) drove through 16 risky scenarios in an advanced driving simulator. There were significant age-related differences in driver scanning behavior, consistent with the hypothesis that novice drivers' scanning patterns reflect their failure to acquire information about potential risks and their consequent failure to deal with these risks. Actual or potential applications of this research include modification of these scenarios for display on a PC as a basis for a training module that would enable novice drivers to recognize risky scenarios before they encounter them on the road, in the hope of reducing their high fatality rate.",

            "abstractNote": "A single-blind randomized study was conducted on young (18-21 years, n�=�16) and mature (25-35 years, n�=�16) drivers to assess how age, combined with a modest dose of alcohol (0.7�g/kg for males and 0.6�g/kg for females), influenced performance on a driving simulator. The driving tasks included detecting the presence of a vehicle on the horizon as quickly as possible, estimating the point on the road that an approaching vehicle would have passed by the participants' vehicle (time-to-collision) and overtaking another vehicle against a steady stream of oncoming traffic. The results of the vehicle detection task showed that detection times were significantly slower with maturity, alcohol consumption and lower approaching vehicle speeds (50�kph), particularly on curved sections of road. Approaching vehicle speed was also found to significantly influence time-to-collision (TTC) judgments, such that faster approach speeds led to less underestimated (and therefore riskier) judgments of TTC than slower speeds. In the overtaking task, mature participants demonstrated impaired discrimination skills with varying approaching vehicle speeds, while young participants recorded significantly slower speeds while overtaking a vehicle, thus increasing the time that they spent in the opposing lane. In conclusion, young and mature drivers demonstrated pivotal differences in behavior in this study. Young drivers showed a greater tendency to engage in risky driving, while experienced drivers appeared to be more susceptible to perceptual influences. Overall, alcohol consumption impaired a driver's ability to divide attention, but had little effect on decision-making processes.",

            "abstractNote": "The major task of the project InterSafe, which is funded by the European Commission, is to reduce the number of accidents in intersection scenarios. In order to solve this problem, the BMW Group chose a top-down approach to develop advanced safety systems for intersections. The relevant scenarios of turning, crossing and ignoring traffic lights were identified by the analysis of intersection accidents. Based on this, the controller will be developed within the realistic environment of the BMW Group dynamic driving simulator. This allows determining the requirements for the surveillance systems in parallel to the development of the other components such as the Human-Machine-Interface and the controller algorithm. Furthermore, the virtual environment allows the evaluation process to occur with real test drivers in critical situations without endangering them. The results of the project will be an assistance system to enhance safety at intersections.",

            "abstractNote": "Tasks such as steering, braking, and intercepting moving objects constitute a class of behaviors, known as visually guided actions, which are typically carried out under continuous control on the basis of visual information. Several decades of research on visually guided action have resulted in an inventory of control laws that describe for each task how information about the sufficiency of one's current state is used to make ongoing adjustments. Although a considerable amount of important research has been generated within this framework, several aspects of these tasks that are essential for successful performance cannot be captured. The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview of the existing framework, discuss its limitations, and introduce a new framework that emphasizes the necessity of calibration and perceptual learning. Within the proposed framework, successful human performance on these tasks is a matter of learning to detect and calibrate optical information about the boundaries that separate possible from impossible actions. This resolves a long-lasting incompatibility between theories of visually guided action and the concept of an affordance. The implications of adopting this framework for the design of experiments and models of visually guided action are discussed.",

            "abstractNote": "Motion platforms can be used to provide vestibular cues in a driving simulator, and have been shown to reduce driving speed and acceleration. However, motion platforms are expensive devices, and alternatives for providing motion cues need to be investigated. In independent experiments, the following eight low-cost nonvestibular motion cueing systems were tested by comparing driver performance to control groups driving with the cueing system disengaged: (1) seat belt tensioning system, (2) vibrating steering wheel, (3) motion seat, (4) screeching tire sound, (5) beeping sound, (6) road noise, (7) vibrating seat, and (8) pressure seat. The results showed that these systems are beneficial in reducing speed and acceleration and that they improve lane-keeping and/or stopping accuracy. The seat belt tensioning system had a particularly large influence on driver braking performance. This system reduced driving speed, increased stopping distance, reduced maximum deceleration, and increased stopping accuracy. It is concluded that low-cost nonvestibular motion cueing may be a welcome alternative for improving in-simulator performance so that it better matches real-world driving performance.",
