"abstractNote": "What is the LOCKSS Program?\n\nLOCKSS (Lots of Copies Keep Stuff Safe), based at Stanford University Libraries, is an international community initiative that provides libraries with digital preservation tools and support so that they can easily and inexpensively collect and preserve their own copies of authorized e-content. LOCKSS, in its twelfth year, provides libraries with the open-source software and support to preserve today’s web-published materials for tomorrow’s readers while building their own collections and acquiring a copy of the assets they pay for, instead of simply leasing them. LOCKSS provides fully managed preservation and 100% post cancellation access.\n\nThe ACM award-winning LOCKSS technology is an open source, peer-to-peer, decentralized digital preservation infrastructure. LOCKSS preserves all formats and genres of web-published content. The intellectual content, which includes the historical context (the look and feel), is preserved. LOCKSS is OAIS-compliant; the software migrates content forward in time; the bits and bytes are continually audited and repaired and the system is \"tamper evident\", required to protect fragile digital content for the very long time.\n\nToday LOCKSS is a thriving international community-based initiative with libraries and publishers working together with the shared goal to preserve e-content for the long-term. Approximately 500 leading scholarly publishers have granted permission for their content to be preserved and for the provision of post cancellation access by LOCKSS Alliance participants.",

To inspire fresh conversation on the constantly evolving digital landscape, exhibits are overseen by guest curators, each of whom is a recognized leader in the field of art, technology, or business.\n\nThe AMDM is a space unlike any created before. Because it is entirely digital, it is an ideal gallery for displaying and viewing digital media, as well as revealing the innovation and artistry within the work. It is open to the public 365 days a year and is accessible from anywhere in the world.\nAbout the structure\n\nThe building itself was designed by Italian architect Filippo Innocenti, a master of fluid urban designs for large, public installations. Innocenti collaborated closely with award-winning designer Piero Frescobaldi, who served as the \"building contractor\" for construction of the virtual space. Adobe is proud to serve as patron on the project.",

Many of our students (and some of their parents) are experiencing a lot of “firsts” as the fall semester begins.\n\nPerhaps it’s an opportune time for faculty to try some “firsts,” too. Not that professors necessarily should be trying something new, but the fall semester seems a good time for it, if other circumstances line up.\n\nAs readers might have figured by this point, I’m trying something new myself this fall: a digital project in one of my upper-level courses. We’ve written about digital projects before in this blog: Jeff’s authored posts on teaching with Omeka and having students draw up contracts for their digital projects.\n\nMy plan is to replace a traditional research paper assignment with a class project that will involve constructing a website using WordPress. Students will decide together what the specific content will be (the general content will be “interesting and/or important figures in American political thought”), and how they want to design the site to best present that content. Collectively, they’ll decide who’ll do what piece (with each student taking primary responsibility for one figure). Since the class is small (thirteen students, at last count), we can have one project for the entire class.\n\nI’m hoping my students will glean a number of things from the project:\n\n Some familiarity with the person whose work they personally explore, and an introduction to the work of those covered by their classmates\n Practice in teamwork and in project planning\n An introduction to technical skills that will be transferable (WordPress is just a vehicle; if students encounter difficulties with it, we’ll work together on strategies for solving them)",

First, research environments for humanities scholars. Second, behind the scenes infrastructure allowing librarians and technologists to better support humanities scholarship across institutions. And third, a blueprint for the next phase of the Bamboo Technology Project, focusing on the evolution of shared applications for the curation and exploration of widely distributed content collections. Working concurrently with the Technology Project, there is an effort to build a community to ensure that Project Bamboo work is expanded and sustained over time.\n\nProject Bamboo is grateful for support provided by the Andrew W. "abstractNote": "Processing is an open source programming language and integrated development environment (IDE) built for the electronic arts and visual design communities with the purpose of teaching the basics of computer programming in a visual context, and to serve as the foundation for electronic sketchbooks. The project was initiated in 2001 by Casey Reas and Benjamin Fry, both formerly of the Aesthetics and Computation Group at the MIT Media Lab. One of the stated aims of Processing is to act as a tool to get non-programmers started with programming, through the instant gratification of visual feedback. The language builds on the Java programming language, but uses a simplified syntax and graphics programming model.",

The unique dynamic between digital and traditional creativity serves as the focal point of the newest AMDM exhibit which we’re excited to unveil this week.\n\nJohn Maeda: Atoms + Bits = the neue Craft (ABC) is the AMDM’s second featured exhibit. It’s an interactive lecture led by world-renowned designer and Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) president John Maeda. In the exhibition, Maeda discusses how today’s designers are connecting the worlds of digital creativity and analog (or handcrafted) creativity. The digitally-rich exhibit also features scenes from RISD design studios – including its textile, glass blowing and print press workshops. According to Maeda, the creative experiences that take place these environments – and the traditional tools designers use to create them – have a direct influence on the tools used and experiences enabled by the digital artists and designers of today.\n\nThis relationship between experience and design and the lessons the traditional art world offer the digital design world are something we’re keenly aware of at Adobe. And it’s one of the many reasons we’re tremendously proud to welcome this new exhibit to the museum.\n\nJohn Maeda: Atoms + Bits = the neue Craft (ABC) will be showing through the end of 2011. It’s accessible online, anytime, and around the world at www.adobemuseum.com. Please stop by, enjoy the new exhibit and let us know what you think.",
