"abstractNote": "The book represents the results of a synchronic and diachronic cross-African survey of quotative indexes. These are linguistic expressions that signal in the ongoing discourse the presence of a quote (often called \"direct reported speech\"). For this purpose, 39 African languages were selected to represent the genealogical and geographical diversity of the continent. The study is based primarily on this language sample, in particular on the analysis of quotative indexes and related expressions from a text corpus of each sample language, but also includes a wide range of data from the published literature on other African as well as non- African languages. It is the first typological investigation of direct reported discourse of this magnitude in a large group of languages. The book may thus serve as a starting point of similar studies in other geographical areas or even with a global scope, as well as stimulate more detailed investigations of particular languages. The results of the African survey challenge several prevailing cross-linguistic generalizations regarding quotative indexes and reported discourse constructions as a whole, of which two are of particular interest. In the syntactic domain, where reported discourse has mostly been dealt with under so- called sentential complementation, the study supports the minority view that direct reported discourse and also a large portion of indirect reported discourse show hardly any evidence for the claim that the reported clause is a syntactic object complement of some matrix verb. With respect to grammaticalization, the work concludes that speech verbs are, against common belief, not a frequent source of quotatives, complementizers, and other related markers. Far more frequent sources are markers of similarity and manner; generic verbs of equation, inchoativity, and action; and pronominals referring to the quote or the speaker. Another more general conclusion of the study is that especially direct reported discourse can be fruitfully analyzed as part of a larger linguistic domain called \"mimesis\". This comprises expressions which represent a state of affairs by means of enactment/ performance rather than with the help of \"canonical\" linguistic signs and includes, besides reported discourse, world-referring bodily gestures, ideophone-like signs, and non-linguistic sound.",

"abstractNote": "It is argued that ideophones constitute a quintessentially social category of words that mark local identity & solidarity & need to be studied as a socially grounded phenomenon within the framework of a theory of expressive language. This thesis is supported by findings of Childs's recent variationist studies of the knowledge & use of ideophones by native speakers of Zulu, a Bantu language of South Africa, & in particular by speakers of Isicamtho, a slang variety of Zulu characteristic of Soweto urban youth. A process of deideophonization is described, whereby Isicamtho speakers either shun Zulu ideophones as symbols of local rural identity or incorporate them into Isicamtho through grammatical category change involving prefixation. Loss of ideophones is also widespread among younger speakers of other varieties of Zulu & is associated with a denial of traditional rural identity. 82 References. J. Hitchcock",

Comparison, based on the etymological dictionaries of the two families, yields some forty areal etymologies, i.e. overlapping which provides what within a single family would be considered clusters of etyma. Since the Indo-Aryan family seems not to inherit the pattern from Indo-European, diffusion is postulated from Dravidian both for the pattern and for some etymological items.",

Although ideophones constitute a phonosemantically defined lexical class, they may be distributed in different grammatical word classes within & across languages; Ewe ideophones, many of which display noncanonical phonotactics & /or phonation types, may function as interjections, intensifiers, adverbs, adjectives, nouns, or verbs. The nonideophonic monomorphemic primary adjectives of Ewe are shown to enter systematic semantic oppositions with ideophonic adjectives, many of which have potential multiple categorizations as adjectives, verbs, & adverbs & have meanings, eg 'black', 'young', & 'whole', that require them to be analyzed as core members of the adjective class. 1 Table, 48 References. With an average frequency of 8%, adjective-adverbs are present in all types of discourse & are particularly abundant in technical texts as they express quality & manner. Adjective-adverbs have a stable formal structure within the framework of Gbaya phonological norms; syntactically, they may be postposed to the verb phrase, precede a noun as an epithet, function as a predicate, or be nominalized with the suffix -a. Although specific correlations between phonological units & meanings cannot be established, the ideophones of this dialect display a degree of transparency that expresses the speaker's perception of semantic choices. 6 Tables, 1 Appendix, 12 References. "abstractNote": "Ideophones are defined as lexical simplexes of the informal language register that are unmarked for grammatical categories & serve to dramatize narration by performing or recreating an event in sound, thereby creating an illusion of immediacy & direct participation in the event; productive techniques in the formation of ideophones include onomatopoeia, sound symbolism, & reduplication. Although ideophones are a universal feature of language, cross-linguistic differences in the meaning & syntax of ideophones are attributed to a typological distinction between onomatopes that represent auditory sensations & nononomatopes representing other types of physical & psychological sensations. These differences are exemplified by contrastive data from Kxoe, a Central Khoisan language of Namibia in which ideophones are primarily onomatopoeic & usually function as complements of a verb of saying, & Baka, an Adamawa language of Cameroon that has ideophones of all semantic types, including polysemic ones, & allows them in any sentence position despite otherwise rigid word order. 12 References. "abstractNote": "The role of sound symbolism in phonesthesia in English and in ideophony in Yoruba and Korean is the main focus of the research and experiments. The first chapter presents a typology of iconicity in phonosemantics based upon observations made by Bellugi and Klima (1978) on iconicity in sign languages. Onomatopes evidence transparent iconicity. Sound symbolic words exhibit translucent iconicity. Phonesthemes and ideophones evidence opaque iconicity. Chapters Two through Four examine issues of ideophony. Two psycholinguistic experiments using Yoruba ideophonic stimuli are described. In the first experiment non-Yoruba-speaking subjects correctly matched Yoruba ideophones (presented aurally) to English translations at statistically significant levels. In the second experiment similar subjects were not able to correctly assign semantic domains (represented as poles of semantic oppositions) to their respective Yoruba ideophonic word-sets (presented aurally). In an experiment using Korean ideophone pairs as stimuli, non-Korean-speaking (native and non-native English-speaking) subjects were able to match the specific meaning given of one member of aurally presented pairs to the correct ideophone at statistically significant levels. The following three chapters examine phonesthesia in English. These include the results of a survey of native speaker judgements concerning the \"relatedness\" among words containing phonesthemes, a replication using non-native English-speaking subjects of Markel and Hamp's (1960-61) experiment on five initial consonant clusters with differing results, and experimental evidence using native Arabic and Japanese non-English-speaking subjects which suggests little role for universal sound symbolism in English phonesthesia. Thus, the experimental results of the dissertation support a psychological distinction between types of iconic sound-meaning correlations. The last chapter is devoted to a formalism suitable for the representation of supralexical phonosemantic correlations within a grammar: Autolexical Semantics. The formalism is applied to example cases of ideophones in English, Korean, Yoruba, and Zulu.",

"abstractNote": "Korean has a large inventory of expressive words, known as \"ideophones\", that describe sounds, colors, odors, tastes, shapes, textures, appearances, gestures, actions, and emotions. In Korean, the function of ideophones is immense. They play an important role in expanding vocabulary through various derivational processes and they fulfill fundamental meanings as well as express subtle connotations not otherwise available in the lexicon. In spite of this, ideophones in Korean remain one of the least understood aspects of the language.\nThe question of what exactly is an ideophone in Korean is not so evident, since semantically expressive words range between those that are typically ideophonic and those that are less so. This study is an attempt to reveal the systematic nature of ideophones in Korean and the way they are interwoven in the language by offering a classification of ideophones in Korean.\nBy identifying [ATR] and [RTR] as morphemic features based on the phonetic correlation in sound symbolism, I offer a constrained way to treat vowel harmony in ideophones. Additionally, I address the question of supposed universal characteristics of sound symbolism in the languages of the world in view of the evidence found in the Korean data. I propose that magnitude symbolism represented by [ATR] and [RTR] vowels in Korean is motivated as follows: [ATR] vowels symbolize Augmentative, reflecting the wider pharynx resulting from advancing the tongue root; [RTR] vowels which are produced with narrower pharynx by virtue of retracting the tongue symbolize Diminutive. An analysis of consonant play in ideophones is offered in which the laryngeal features [+Constricted Glottis] and [+Spread Glottis] are identified as morphemic features which are associated with intensifying degrees.\n\nAdditionally, special focus is given to the phenomenon of reduplication in ideophones. By adopting the theory of prosodic morphology, I posit a constrained way of handling the various types of reduplication that are observed in Korean ideophones.",

"abstractNote": "Anthropological linguists continue to investigate sound symbolism, even though the subject is dismissed out of hand by some mainstream linguists. Prominent scholars offered insights earlier in the century. Now, a recent Berkeley volume exemplifies wider, multi-disciplinary interests. A focus of scholarship that offers investigative promise involves a type of verb, common in the word's languages, that conveys a particular sense of immediacy, emotion, and vividness. In Australian and African languages, these verbs are called ideophones, in Japanese gitaigo, and in Mayan languages affect verbs. But relevant Mayan studies have only been realized in the Greater Tzeltalan family. The reasons have to do with the readily identifiable morphosyntactic markers that characterize these verbs in those languages. However, languages are more than the sums of their grammatical markers. Cognate verbs and suffixes are found in K'iche'. These K'iche' verbs are prominent in the same domains (e.g., ethnosymptomatology) in which they are found in the Chiapas languages. The relationships between these words across languages are striking. In K'iche' they seem to be used mostly by older people in culture-specific activities, and also include some morphosyntactic features of their own such as lexical and feature metathesis, as well as certain semantic characteristics--for example, their use of \"saliency devices\" such as metonymy and sound symbolism. K'ichean sound symbolism can be divided into three forms: (1) phonemic (in which semantic values for the language's phonemes are identifiable); (2) onomatopoeic (in which most of the roots of the language are seen to be sound symbolic via a kuub'an kind of construction, and (3) desinence or \"form\" symbolism, in which the desinence contributes to a stem's semantic value. Phonemic symbolism often involves a figure/ground relationship between the initial and final consonants such that one modifies or \"fine tunes\" the other. The town of Santa Catarina Ixtahuacán, the site for this study, has recently experienced traumatic cultural changes. The changes that are occurring beneath the surface are even profounder than the dramatic changes involving the relocation of the town, which occurred above it. These changes threaten the existence of traditional language forms such as affect verbs and sound symbolism.",
