"abstractNote": "In a case study of a racially mixed high school undertaking detrucking, gender politics among the teachers emerged as a shaping force in the reform effort. This paper examines the politics of representation among two factions of teachers at the school. The reform, led by a party of female teachers, was derailed as a coalition of male teachers employed a gender discourse to successfully capture the dominant mode of representing what “school” means. The entrenched male teachers' efforts at maintaining a culture of patriarchy was part of their larger movement to maintain tracking's status hierarchy among students.",

"abstractNote": "The goal of this research study has been to develop, implement, and evaluate a school reform design experiment at a continuation high school with low-income, low-performing underrepresented minority students. The complexity sciences served as a theoretical framework for this design experiment. Treating an innovative college preparatory program as a nested complex adaptive system within a larger complex adaptive system, the school, we used features of complex adaptive systems (equilibrium, emergence, self-organization, and feedback loops) as a framework to design a strategy for school reform. The goal was to create an environment for change by pulling the school far from equilibrium using a strategy we call “purposeful perturbations” to disrupt the stable state of the school in a purposeful way. Over the four years of the study, several tipping points were reached, and we developed agent-based simulation models that capture important dynamic properties of the reform at these points. The study draws upon complexity theory in multiple ways that have supported improved education for low-achieving students.",

"abstractNote": "This study examined the effects of the digital storytelling experience of beginning pre-service teachers on their self-efficacy in educational technology and disposition toward change with regard to new technological approaches to teaching. A total of 76 freshmen participated in the study. After participating in a brief tutorial session, the participants created their own personal stories using Photo Story software. Results indicated that the participants’ technology competency and dispositions toward change with regard to new technological approaches to teaching improved with the experience of digital storytelling. The study suggests that digital storytelling is an educational tool that can promote constructive and authentic learning experiences. The study then recommends that instructors of teacher education programs consider tools, like digital storytelling, that infuse the pre-service teachers’ personal technology skills into their future classrooms.",

"abstractNote": "Background/Context: Previous research has pointed to the dismal state of secondary education in California and its implications for college access. These studies identified the extent to which disparities in access and outcomes in California are correlated with school demographics and the relative levels of segregation that exist in California's public high schools. Purpose/Objective/Research Question/Focus of Study: Our research advances understandings of this association within California's most selective sector of public higher education: the University of California. Three research questions guided our study: (1) In what ways, if any, are the racial compositions of high schools different for first-time freshmen (FTF) at different UC campuses? (2) How are the racial compositions of high schools that are the source of underrepresented minorities (URMs) at each UC campus different, if at all, from the racial compositions of high schools that are the source of White FTF? (3) Do the racial compositions of public high schools in California have an independent net effect on the likelihood that a school will send graduates to the University of California and individual UC campuses, controlling for other school characteristics? Research Design: To answer our research questions, this quantitative study used descriptive correlations and multiple regressions to examine the high school source of FTF for 8 out of 9 UC campuses for the 2000-2001 academic year. Findings/Results: Although the University of California as a whole may appear to be making gains in providing opportunities for students of color, accessibility to individual UC campuses for Black and Latino students varied depending on URM or White high school attendance. At 5 of the 8 campuses in this study, a greater proportion of URM FTF originated from White schools, as opposed to URM schools, where they were most concentrated. Conclusions and Recommendations: Educational policies and practices in the UC system that hold some campuses accountable for goals of equity yet allow other campuses to exclude whole groups of students based primarily on the high school they attended are neither effective nor equitable. Researchers, policy makers, and educational leaders should examine the ways in which admissions policies may inherently privilege one group (those from White schools) and disadvantage other groups (those from URM schools). This problem needs to be addressed by both policy makers and practitioners in higher education and the K-12 system.",

Statistical analyses of data collected from 185 JFL and JHL students aged 17-22 indicated that there were striking similarities between the JFL Learner group and 2 JHL groups (JHL students with at least 1 Japanese-speaking grandparent but without a Japanese-speaking parent as 1 group, and JHL students of Japanese descent without either a Japanese-speaking parent or grandparent as the other). In contrast, another group of JHL students (those with at least 1 Japanese-speaking parent) proved to be substantially different from other groups in (a) grammatical knowledge, (b) listening and reading skills, (c) self-assessed use/choice of Japanese, and (d) self-ratings of a number of can-do tasks (Clark, 1981) that represented a wide range of abilities.",

"abstractNote": "There has been a tremendous resurgence of interest in narrative in many fields and disciplines including educational technology. Behind this concept of narrative is the idea that the story form is a fundamental structure of mind and an activity humans use to make meaning of experience. One demand we face as educators and technologists is to learn more about the role of narrative in teaching and learning. This study documents one case of a teacher educator teaching technology through narrative, or a “storied” curriculum. Evidence from this study suggests that teachers wanting to use a narrative approach must: (a) create a space for the sharing of stories; (b) support students in their development of a teleography; and (c) develop ways to document and evaluate the reshaping of original stories. Even without a storied curriculum, educators must begin to understand both the role of student as “story developer” and the fluidity of the story as “process.” Suggestions for future research are offered.",

"abstractNote": "There has been a tremendous resurgence of interest in narrative in many fields and disciplines including educational technology. Behind this concept of narrative is the idea that the story form is a fundamental structure of mind and an activity we humans use to make meaning of experience. One demand we face as educators and technologists is to learn more about the role of narrative in teaching and learning. This study documents one case of a teacher educator teaching technology through narrative, or a \"storied\" curriculum. Evidence from this study suggests that teachers wanting to use a narrative approach must: a) create a space for the sharing of stories; b) support students in their development of a teliography; and c) develop ways to document and evaluate the reshaping of original stories. Even without a storied curriculum, educators must begin to understand both the role of student as \"story developer\" and the fluidity of the story as \"process.\" Suggestions for future research are offered.",

"abstractNote": "We are quickly passing through the historical moment when people work in front of a single computer, dominated by a small CRT and focused on tasks involving only local information. Networked computers are becoming ubiquitous and are playing increasingly significant roles in our lives and in the basic infrastructures of science, business, and social interaction. For human-computer interaction to advance in the new millennium we need to better understand the emerging dynamic of interaction in which the focus task is no longer confined to the desktop but reaches into a complex networked world of information and computer-mediated interactions. We think the theory of distributed cognition has a special role to play in understanding interactions between people and technologies, for its focus has always been on whole environments: what we really do in them and how we coordinate our activity in them. Distributed cognition provides a radical reorientation of how to think about designing and supporting human-computer interaction. As a theory it is specifically tailored to understanding interactions among people and technologies. In this article we propose distributed cognition as a new foundation for human-computer interaction, sketch an integrated research framework, and use selections from our earlier work to suggest how this framework can provide new opportunities in the design of digital work materials.",
