The methodology uses the Twitter APIs to identify a target population and then uses the API to deliver a question in the form of a regular Tweet. We hypothesized that this method would yield high response rates because users are posed a question within the social media platform and are not asked, as is the case with most web surveys, to follow a link away to a third party. To evaluate the response rate and identify the most effective mechanism for increasing it, we conducted a discrete choice experiment that evaluated three factors: question type, the use of an egoistic appeal, and the presence of contextual information. We found that, similar to traditional web surveys, multiple choice questions, egoistic appeals, and contextual information all contributed to higher response rates. Question variants that combined all three yielded a 40.0% response rate, thereby outperforming most other web surveys and demonstrating the promise of this new methodology. The approach can be extended to any other social media platforms where users typically interact with one another. Early OD work examined the potential of IT-enabled openness to decentralize power and enable public engagement by disintermediating knowledge production and dissemination. However, in practice, intermediaries have emerged to facilitate open data and related knowledge production activities in development processes. We identify five models of intermediation in OD work: decentralized, arterial, ecosystem, bridging, and communities of practice and examine the implications of each for stewardship of open processes. We conclude that studying OD through these five forms of intermediation is a productive way of understanding whether and how different patterns of knowledge stewardship influence development outcomes. We also offer suggestions for future research that can improve our understanding of how to sustain openness, facilitate public engagement, and ensure that intermediation contributes to open journal content, has always been somewhat agnostic as to the format of the content itself. Most authors, unsurprisingly, use Microsoft Word for its familiarity and ubiquity during the actual writing process, and the act of getting content from Word format into something that can be easily consumed on the web after that has always been something of a mystery among publishers. Those who have the means will typically outsource or partially automate the markup of an article in XML or an XML-like format, and this XML can then be transformed into HTML on the fly for viewing (OJS does include some stylesheets for this purpose); others, including many smaller open source journals, convert directly to the printable PDF format as a path of least effort, leaving them with something that looks nice on a printed page but potentially not so nice and not too flexible otherwise. For the past two years, PKP has been working on a web service (which integrates into OJS' workflow via a provided plugin) to fully automate the conversion of Word/compatible documents into the National Library of Medicine's standard JATS XML format (the same format which underlies PubMed Central), using fuzzy parsing and machine learning heuristics, and transform documents from there into matching human-readable HTML and PDF. This development, broadly speaking, takes two parts: one, the core OpenOffice/Word 2007 \"docx\" XML to JATS XML conversion engine, called \"meTypeset\" developed jointly with Martin Eve of the Open Library of the Humanities, and two, the web service pipeline, which unites meTypeset and other open-source libraries (including LibreOffice, ParsCit, ExifTool, and others). The study is primarily descriptive, focusing on coverage levels disaggregated by year, country, subject area, and language. \nFindings: Coverage levels for most of the social media sources studied was zero or negligible. Only three metrics had coverage levels above 2%—Mendeley, Twitter, and Facebook. Of these, Twitter showed the most significant differences with previous studies. Mendeley coverage levels reach those found by previous studies, but it takes up to two years longer for articles to be saved in the reference manager. For the most recent year, coverage was less than half than what was found in previous studies. The coverage levels of Facebook appear similar (around 3%) to that of previous studies. \nResearch limitations/implications: The Altmetric.com data used for some of the analyses was collected for a six month period. For other analyses, Altmetric.com data was only available for a single country (Brazil). \nOriginality/value: The results of this study have implications for the altmetrics research community and for any stakeholders interested in using altmetrics for evaluation.
