The modern pantry is filled with numbers, quantities and claims of “more” and “less.” At the root of these messages is a discourse of quantification that encourages a unique, objective and rational approach to food and eating. In this paper I trouble the reliance on this discourse by American federal nutrition policy-makers. Herein, I point to the underpinnings and emergence of a discourse of quantification of food, I ask how public policies in the form of food guides encourage such a discourse, and I point to more subjective and qualitative discourses that are lost or rendered powerless in the face of quantified food.\n\nRésumé\n\n Les guides alimentaires, les emballages, les étiquettes et les myriades de livres de régime incitent les consommateurs à se focaliser sur les aspects quantitatifs de ce qu’ils mangent. Le garde-manger moderne est rempli de chiffres, de quantités et de slogans de “plus” et “moins”. À la base de ces messages réside un discours de quantification qui aborde l’alimentation sous un angle scientifique, objectif et rationnel. Cette recherche vise à expliquer pourquoi les politiques alimentaires officielles des États-Unis utilisent uniquement ce discours et à rechercher les fondements de ce dernier. J’interroge les guides alimentaires pour comprendre pourquoi ils amènent les gens à ne considérer que les chiffres en perdant de vue les aspects subjectifs et qualitatifs de la nourriture.", Yet these sweet, yeasty baked goods are a well-loved treat that trigger memorial narratives for those who remember eating them in downtown Toronto between the 1930s and the 1950s. For those who grew up during that era, blueberry buns represent childhood, summertime and visits with friends and family. This paper will explore the cultural significance of blueberry buns, as well as attempt to solve several mysteries that surround this Toronto treat: where did the recipe come from? Why did the buns become so popular? And finally, why have these treats remained solely within the boundaries of Toronto? \n \n Résumé\n \n Contrairement à d'autres mets appartenant à la mémoire collective juive, comme le poisson gefilte ou la soupe aux boulettes de pain azyme maison, les brioches aux bleuets sont pratiquement inconnues de la communauté juive à l'extérieur de Toronto. Ces pâtisseries au levain sont une gâterie appréciée qui déclenche un flot de souvenirs chez ceux qui se rappellent en avoir mangé au centre de Toronto dans les années 1930,1940 et 1950. Pour tous ceux qui ont grandi à cette époque, les brioches aux bleuets représentent l'enfance, l'été et les visites aux amis et à la famille. They termed the meal sagamité after an Abenaki term for the dish, but in the Great Lakes region versions like it survive under the term booya especially, possibly derived from French descriptions of the preparation method. Fun food carves out a space that affirms the unique preferences and tastes of children while establishing their symbolic distance from the world of adult foods. Examining these products provides novel insight to both the contemporary configuration of “childhood” and its versioning of “play” as well as its place in the modern domestic foodscape. I argue that bringing fun food into the domestic foodscape creates a space for children’s own (transgressive) food rituals, while fun food fosters in children a very different kind of mindful eating: eating, not while distracted, but as distraction itself. Fun food encourages children to be mindful of consumption because it promises an extension of play.\n\nRésumé \n\nCet article se penche sur la signification des produits alimentaires de supermarché ciblant la clientèle des enfants (fun food), en avançant que la valeur symbolique de cette « nourriture ludique » réside dans le fait d’être présentée comme un divertissement, une autonomisation et une expérience pour les enfants. La nourriture ludique crée un espace affirmant les préférences et les goûts exclusifs des enfants en les mettant symboliquement à distance du monde de la nourriture des adultes. Le fait d’examiner ces produits permet de nouveaux aperçus sur : la configuration contemporaine de « l’enfance » ainsi que l’accentuation de la notion de « jeu » ; sa place dans le « paysage alimentaire » domestique moderne. J’avance que le fait d’amener la nourriture ludique dans le paysage alimentaire domestique crée une espace pour les rituels alimentaires (de transgression) propres aux enfants, tandis qu’elle provoque chez eux une manière totalement différente d’avoir conscience de s’alimenter : manger, non pas en étant distrait, mais en tant que distraction en soi. Adapting to the colder climate and marginal soil of first, Newfoundland, and then Cape Breton, the French introduced innovative solutions to the difficulties of land infertility. The French had confidence—given enough manpower—that anything was possible. By building roads, bridges, filling marshes, removing rocks, transporting rich soil, making raised beds, creating ponds, wells, fountains, using glass bells, fertilizer, seaweed, lime and compost, they imposed a discipline upon nature and transformed the most barren ground into bountiful gardens.\n \n \n Résumé \n \n Cet article sur l’horticulture dans l’Île Royale (Cap-Breton) décrit les efforts des Français pour subvenir à leurs besoins alimentaires au moyen de potagers, de bétail et de petites fermes mixtes («ménageries»). Pour composer avec le climat plus froid et le sol mince de Terre-Neuve, puis du Cap-Breton, les Français ont appliqué diverses solutions novatrices au problème de la pauvreté des sols.
