A capstone project may either be industry- sponsored or internally-sourced with student teams advised by faculty and engineers from local companies. The team's goal is to meet the deliverables required by the proposal or statement of work. The semester culminates with a formal presentation of results evaluated by a professional panel of practitioners and a final report substantiating the results and findings. Mechanical Engineering Technology (MET) seniors are tasked to solve multi-disciplinary problems based on a statement of work initiated by a sponsoring local company. Electronic Engineering Technology (EET) projects originate internally in the form of proposals developed jointly by students and faculty with the objective being to design, construct and test a prototype system. A quality project requires faculty, sponsors and students to weigh a number of issues. Those that have no practical value or that merely serve the short term needs of an industry sponsor are not suitable. Another challenge is setting the scope of work and level of difficulty to be appropriate for ET seniors. Successful project management among the team members and their relationship to the faculty and external sponsors requires an array of communication and soft skills. Resources must be factored into the planning process: e.g. fabrication capabilities, technical support and/or the cost of purchased components/services. In small teaching institutions, the above issues are especially critical and must be carefully weighed. This paper discusses the structure, approach and evolution of capstone projects within our College. It compares and contrasts the differences between industry-sponsored and internally- sourced projects. The elements of project structure, resource trade-offs and successful execution are addressed as well as the issues and benefits experienced by students, faculty and industry sponsors. © American The National Academy of Engineering2 recommends that universities should address how students learn in addition to what they learn in order to ensure that student learning outcomes focus on the performance characteristics needed in future engineers. This paper addresses how case study-based instructional strategy has been used as an effective tool in an Introductory Course in Mechanical Engineering (ENGR 1110) at the freshman level to overcome these problems. This instructional strategy has been in use during the past three semesters at Auburn University, and the evaluation results show that the students involved obtained a thorough understanding of the engineering concepts and also improved their soft skills, including team working, communication, and ethical and problem solving skills. In most cases, the core problem is not a lack of general intellectual capacity, but rather significant deficiencies in certain base competencies (i.e. self-, practical and cognitive as well as social competencies). We imply that these base competencies are crucial for successfully studying computer science or related topics. In order to identify these base competencies, we collected a superset of competencies from literature, structured this set, and performed filtering and clustering steps, resulting in almost 100 remaining base competencies that are relevant in our teaching context. As it is impossible for any lecturer to develop all these competencies in a single effort, we finally boiled this set down to a selection of those competencies that we deem to be most relevant for successfully studying software related topics at university level. Towards this end, for each competence, we defined what we the lecturers expect from our incoming freshmen students. In addition, we specified the skill level expected by the job market. Furthermore, we assessed the skill level of those 70% of our students that have obvious difficulties in coping with study requirements. Finally, we selected those competencies with a large difference between what is expected from our graduates and what we find in our incoming cohort. This analysis resulted in a selection of 27 competencies that we deem to be highly essential prerequisites for software engineering education, and which are not sufficiently well developed in the vast majority of freshmen students. However, such authentic situations with real audience and genuine high-stakes objectives are not frequent due to the difficulty to holding one. This paper presents a self-regulated mobile learning approach of training oral presentation. A mobile application with feed-back functions will allow presenters to practice certain elements of effective presentation that do not require authentic training. A mobile application called PresentMate was developed for the evaluation of this approach. The mobile application can provide instant or delayed feedback on timing, body motion, and voice level to the user. The user can practice at any place and at any time to improve presentation skills based on consideration of the feedback.
