This is a historical assumption, however, rooted in colonial encounters when the notion of cultural difference first entered the architectural scene. In the first part of my article, I focus on a statement by Vitruvius that provides ways of thinking about architecture outside cultural identity categories. In the second part, I analyze two nineteenth-century texts to show both the cultural inscriptions of architectural discourse and their breaking points. Finally, I argue that recognizing the historicity of the relationship between architecture and culture involves problematizing architecture as an identity category as much as questioning culture as an architectural category.]",

Apart from Jacobs's direct influence, among the parallels that emerged from their Townscape affiliations and other interests, the concept of complexity stands out, with Venturi's conception echoing Jacobs's historic introduction of complexity science into architectural and urban theory. While Venturi did not seek to extend the scientific research put forward by Jacobs, favoring instead the complexities suggested by gestalt theory and New Criticism, he cited similar scientific sources and derived similar principles for urbanism, as revealed by his Copley Square project of 1966.]",

"abstractNote": "We hypothesize that linguistic (dis-) organization in the schizophrenic brain plays a much more central role in the pathogenesis of this disease than commonly supposed. Against the standard view, that schizophrenia is a disturbance of thought or selfhood, we argue that the origins of the relevant forms of thought and selfhood at least partially depend on language. The view that they do not is premised by a theoretical conception of language that we here identify as ‘Cartesian’ and contrast with a recent ‘un-Cartesian’ model. This linguistic model empirically argues for both (i) a one-to-one correlation between human-specific thought or meaning and forms of grammatical organization, and (ii) an integrative and co-dependent view of linguistic cognition and its sensory-motor dimensions. Core dimensions of meaning mediated by grammar on this model specifically concern forms of referential and propositional meaning. A breakdown of these is virtually definitional of core symptoms. Within this model the three main positive symptoms of schizophrenia fall into place as failures in language-mediated forms of meaning, manifest either as a disorder of speech perception (Auditory Verbal Hallucinations, AVHs), abnormal speech production running without feedback control (Formal Thought Disorder, FTD), or production of abnormal linguistic content (Delusions). Our hypothesis makes testable predictions for the language profile of schizophrenia across symptoms; it simplifies the cognitive neuropsychology of schizophrenia while not being inconsistent with a pattern of neurocognitive deficits and their correlations with symptoms; and it predicts persistent findings on disturbances of language-related circuitry in the schizophrenic brain.",

I conjecture that disorder has become a focal point for contemporary theories because it offers the possibility of escaping from what are increasingly perceived as coercive structures of order. But in privileging disorder, theorists cannot extract themselves from the weight of their disciplinary traditions, even if they want to (and scientists, for the most part, do not want to). Thus there arise complex layerings in which traces of old paradigms are embedded within new,",

A promising, but rather unexpected, variant of Oedipal criticism is provided by Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari's schizoanalysis, a Nietzsche-inspired critique of Freud that moves beyond Erich Fromm and Wilhelm Reich to examine the systematic co-opting of the libido by a capitalism whose \"first requirement,\" according to Guattari, is to \"separate desire from work,\" and then to block \"every approach to desire on the part of the worker\" by \"familialist castration [the Oedipus Complex] and the traps of consumerism, and so on; after which it is not hard to take possession of his labour-power.\" Deleuze and Guattari are particularly interested in what they call \"minor\" or \"anoedipal\" literature, which exposes an alliance between Freud and capitalism. James Ellroy's Black Dahlia (1987), the most recent attempt to \"solve\" in fiction the unsolved 1947 torture, mutilation, and murder of Elizabeth Short, is a vivid example of an \"anoedipal\" detective novel. Indeed, The Black Dahlia may be read as a relentless critique of mid-twentieth-century America that sees emotional devastation, racist paranoia, and familial psychosis as inevitable by-products of capitalism capitalizing on desire by way of the Oedipus Complex.]",

When the \"poetry\" is cut loose from the \"perception,\" the writing degenerates into melodramatic, romantic fantasy. When the emphasis is on perception, as it is particularly in the later essays on Atlanta, Singapore, and Generic Cities, the poetry--the depth and feeling--reinforces the astuteness of perceptive grasp. The weakness of Koolhaas's writing on cities can be understood as resulting from his unfortunate conviction that creative freedom, which he values above all, does not need to be engaged with otherness--that it needs, in fact, to be capricious, private fantasy ex nihilo, inscribed on a tabula rasa.]",
