            "abstractNote": "In this study we use a state-of-the-art planning model for the electric power system - the SWITCH model - to investigate the evolution of the power systems of California and western North America from present-day to 2050 in the context of deep decarbonization of the economy. We find drastic power system carbon emission reductions to be feasible by 2050 under a wide range of possible futures. The average cost of power in 2050 is found to range between $149/MWh and $232/MWh across scenarios, a 21 to 88 % increase relative to a business-as-usual scenario, and a 38 to 115 % increase relative to the present-day cost of power. In order to rapidly decarbonize, the power system undergoes sweeping change. Between present-day and 2030, the evolution of the Western Electricity Coordinating Council (WECC) power system is dominated by the implementation of aggressive energy efficiency measures, the installation of renewable energy and gas-fired generation facilities, and the retirement of coal-fired generation. In the 2040 time frame, deployment of wind, solar, and geothermal power reduce power system emissions by displacing gas-fired generation. In the 2050 time frame this deployment trend continues for wind and solar, but is accompanied by large amounts of new storage and long-distance, high-voltage transmission capacity. In stark contrast to present-day operation, electricity storage is used primarily to move solar energy from the daytime into the night in order to charge electric vehicles and meet demand from electrified heating. Transmission capacity over the California border is increased by 40 - 220 % by 2050, implying that transmission siting, permitting, and regional cooperation will become increasingly important over time. California remains a net electricity importer in all scenarios investigated. Wind and solar power are key elements in power system decarbonization, providing 37 - 56 % and 17 - 32 % of energy generated respectively across WECC in 2050 if no new nuclear capacity is built. In an effort to integrate wind and solar resources, the amount of installed gas capacity remains relatively constant between present-day and 2050, though carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) is installed on some gas plants by 2050. The fleet-wide average capacity factor of non-CCS gas generation drops steeply between 2030 and 2050, reaching only 5 - 16 % in 2050 for scenarios that meet the 86 % emission reduction target.",

            "abstractNote": "The Renewable Electricity Futures (RE Futures) Study investigated the challenges and impacts of achieving very high renewable electricity generation levels in the contiguous United States by 2050. The analysis focused on the sufficiency of the geographically diverse U.S. renewable resources to meet electricity demand over future decades, the hourly operational characteristics of the U.S. grid with high levels of variable wind and solar generation, and the potential implications of deploying high levels of renewables in the future. RE Futures focused on technical aspects of high penetration of renewable electricity; it did not focus on how to achieve such a future through policy or other measures. Given the inherent uncertainties involved with analyzing alternative long-term energy futures as well as the multiple pathways that might be taken to achieve higher levels of renewable electricity supply, RE Futures explored a range of scenarios to investigate and compare the impacts of renewable electricity penetration levels (30%-90%), future technology performance improvements, potential constraints to renewable electricity development, and future electricity demand growth assumptions. RE Futures was led by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).",

            "abstractNote": "The substitution of the conventional fleet with plug-in Electric Vehicles (EVs) is one possible path towards the decarbonisation and more sustainability of private transportation. However, benefits related to a high number of vehicles, and the measures that could mitigate negative effects on the electric grid have to be assessed. In this paper a new model is presented for investigating the effect of a high-medium penetration of EVs on a local grid and their role on the emissions reduction. Besides it allows analyzing how the smart charging and the Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) options can reduce the additional load or even support the power grid stability. Pro and cons are presented and a case study is proposed.",

            "abstractNote": "The transportation sector is the largest consumer of fossil fuels and the largest emitter of greenhouse gases (GHG) in the United States. Top-billed strategies to reduce fuel consumption, namely “fleet fuel-efficiency” and “decarbonization” are not likely to deliver the required reductions of fuel consumption and GHG emissions. For the transportation sector to meaningfully reduce its footprint, there has to be a shift away from personal automobiles to public-transportation—and the lifestyle that comes with it. Livable communities where walking and bicycling are viable, and where residences and businesses are smaller and situated more closely together, are the solution, rather than a continuation of the auto-centric paradigm, even with greater engine efficiency and/or electrification of fleet. Conceptually, the big reduction opportunity lies not in taking the carbon out of the car, but in taking the car out of carbon. In other words creating communities where the car is not the only means of transportation or even the preferred means; rather than communities where cars still rule, with a modification that powers them with electricity.",

            "abstractNote": "This paper highlights the key results from the Renewable Electricity (RE) Futures Study. It is a detailed consideration of renewable electricity in the United States. The paper focuses on technical issues related to the operability of the U.S. electricity grid and provides initial answers to important questions about the integration of high penetrations of renewable electricity technologies from a national perspective. The results indicate that the future U.S. electricity system that is largely powered by renewable sources is possible and the further work is warranted to investigate this clean generation pathway. The central conclusion of the analysis is that renewable electricity generation from technologies that are commercially available today, in combination with a more flexible electric system, is more than adequate to supply 80% of the total U.S. electricity generation in 2050 while meeting electricity demand on an hourly basis in every region of the United States.",
