While ICT commands considerable attention in this transition, the demand for digital competences cannot be underestimated in education systems that are largely teacher centric. This work explores the theoretical contours to teaching and learning as a relational property of the three-way interaction posited by Anderson (International Review of Research in Open and Distance Learning 4(2):126–141, 2003) consisting of students, content and educators to enable greater engagement and ultimately create cognitive justicecognitive justice. In recognition of epistemic diversity, this chapter—through a meta-analysis approach—explores digital learning as well as the interplay between technological advancement and instructional delivery, all of which are disrupting the incumbent techniques. While there is a lot of literature on ICT affordances, the main contribution of this chapter is the mapping of digital technology affordances against the four key principles for learning: autonomy, connectedness, diversity and openness. The inherent potential benefit of this mapping is the prospective of the creation of new enabling learning environments while also improving access to education. The research is a qualitative study based on the free interview of the focus group of online tutors and ICT experts on their experiences and problems they faced during their first year of online tutoring to the university students. The problems identified were grouped in four clusters (a) technical, (b) managerial, (c) instructional and (d) psychological. Based on the findings, a complex of solutions have been suggested and being implemented into practice in order to enhance the quality of online tutoring in the framework of the formal university education. The main purpose of the enhancements is to raise the online tutors’ competences in ICT tools for online tutoring purposes and to reformat their teaching experience from the face-to-face mode of teaching to the specifics of online tutoring and communication mediated by appropriate ICT tools. Considering the results of the study, we developed an outline of skills and competences required for an online tutor and formulated principles of effective online tutoring. Advances in network technology have opened up new doors for the delivery of teaching in the form of online learning. This study compares a traditional instructor-led lecture with synchronous e-learning (SeL) using otolaryngological emergencies teaching as an educational intervention. A randomised controlled trial was designed involving two groups of medical students attending an otolaryngology emergencies management lecture: one present FtF and the other viewing the streamed lecture online. The primary outcome measure was improvement between pre-and post-lecture test scores. Secondary outcomes comprised the students’ ratings of the lecture on a Likert-type scale. Students in both groups had improved test scores following the lecture (p < 0.001 for both groups) and there was no difference in magnitude of improvement in test scores between the two groups (p = 0.168). There was no difference in student ratings between the two groups for the usefulness of the lecture (p = 0.484), interactivity (p = 0.834) and meeting educational needs (p = 0.968). The FtF group, however, was more satisfied overall (p = 0.034). This study demonstrates that SeL may be as effective as FtF teaching in improving students’ knowledge on the management of otolaryngological emergencies, and that it is generally positively perceived by medical undergraduates. The research was conducted with a quantitative, descriptive, and prospective approach, the population was undergraduate Dentistry clinical students, and the sample was collected according to selection criteria: undergraduate Dentistry clinical students who agreed to participate voluntarily, who have taken and completed at least two clinical subjects virtually during the SARS-Cov-2 pandemic, who have taken and completed at least two clinical subjects face-to-face before the SARS-Cov-2 pandemic. Single variable appreciation of virtual teaching in contrast to face-to-face teaching was measured by a questionnaire validated in 2021. The questionnaire applied had a Cronbach's α = 0,979; in addition, it showed that 30,4% of clinical students disagreed/strongly disagreed with virtual teaching in contrast to face-to-face teaching and only 26.1% agreed, although 43.5% were undecided. It is concluded that a considered percentage of Dentistry clinical students disagreed/strongly disagreed with virtual teaching in contrast to face-to-face teaching.
