This paper presents a case study of a database project in an academic environment. The Early Novels Database (END) is a bibliographic database of 3000 novels produced in collaboration between the Penn Librarians, IT specialists, faculty and undergraduate researchers.
With the proliferation of massive digitization projects such as GoogleBook, important information about the edition and copy specific has been lost. This affects scholars in locating particular novels.
This project used graduate students to create records in the database. The students were trained before and many of them had a personal project related to the database work. It was also an opportunity for the students to work with IT, Library and Professors.
The database facilitates the work of researchers as it makes use of faceted searches that can help users to locate and view the information in more flexible ways.
One of the potential values perceived by the authors is the possibility to inspire other forms of collaborative humanities research.

This is an earlier (2002) from the authors of \"Component based end user database design for ecologist\" that describes again the Canopy database project probably at an earlier stage. I guess this show that this is not a new problem, it has been there for a while.
Very similar to the other paper, it talks about the importance of the information management and shared databases to advance research in ecology.
The results presented in the earlier project on major obstacles that impede fores research are also presented here i.e. problems in the management, use and sharing of datasets. The obstacles to using IT are the same, documenting data is time consuming and concerns about being credited and proper use of the data.
Again it describes the Canopy Database project with the tools that would be developed as well as some of the strategies such as the use of templates to simplify design of databases.

The paper indetifies information management, and databases specifically, as one of the practices that will help moving the field of ecology research forward since data management is perceived as the biggest challenge for researchers.
As in many other fields, data collection occurs individually and generally researchers maintain their databases in spreadsheets in their own computers. There is also lack of harmonized protocols and metadata.
The paper points two major barriers to data sharing, documenting the data is time comsuming and what they called \"sociological reasons\" such as wanting to gleaned all usefulness before, misunderstanding about citing data or risk of misinterpretation of their data.
An interesting point of the paper is the acknowledgement of the importance of empowering users to do some of the programing with appropriate tools.
The Canopy database is the project where a set of tools is developed to support the management of data to canopy researchers. Some of the tools developed provide researchers with means to designing their databases, easy customizable data entry forms and visualization.
The database design tool simplies the process for researchers with the provision of common structures, called templates, that allow researchers using domain-specific database components.

Prolactinomas and non-functioning tumours are the most common subtypes clinically, as well as in surgical and histopathological series. In pre-pubertal children, corticotrophinomas, although rare, are the most common subtype, prolactinomas being most common in adolescents. In autopsy series, 11% of pituitaries harbour an adenoma. These are usually small (less than 10 mm in diameter), and where examined, about half are prolactinomas. Computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging examination of normal subjects reveals abnormalities of greater than 3 mm in diameter in 10% of pituitaries. Other cancers in patients with pituitary tumours are confined to acromegalics, in whom colonic lesions are more prevalent than in the general population. Several long-term sequelae of pituitary tumours with respect to morbidity and mortality have been identified from retrospective analyses. However, data on these are not standardized, requiring the development of national databases and registers to collect clinical outcomes from large cohorts according to agreed standard proformas. These registers will provide a sufficient number of cases for statistically valid conclusions on different clinical subgroups. The development of national guidelines for best practice for the management of patients with these tumours provides the basis for an audit of the management process and outcomes between centres.
