The author uses \"sex differences\" and \"gender differences\" interchangeably, and provides a useful overview of the field of EP, going on to detail sexual behavior as it is described by EP. Smiler presents evidence to argue against SST's foundation that gender/sexual differences are biologically based, citing case studies that challenge notions of male sexual behavior, specifically impulsive promiscuity. The emphasis on sexual/gender differences over the characteristics that get based in these differences (e.g., the author illustrates long- versus short-term mating practices) is something the author problematizes, since the SST centers on behavior, but places it in gender/sexual terms that is not backed up by more recent evidence. Smiler pulls in evidence from recent case studies, which refutes much of the sexual/gender difference claims the SST makes, much of which is not based in scientific measurements, but is obtained through personality, emotional, and other means.</p>",

"abstractNote": "When women lack estrus they lack sexuality based on this evolutionary and biological standard. Thornhill and Gangestad examine four major features of woman's sexuality through an evolutionary methodology: continuous copulability, permanent sexual ornamentation, concealed ovulation, and variation in women's sexuality across the menstrual cycle. This last feature is controversial, because the notion of estrus or heat during the menstrual cycle has been historically contested. The authors look at women's extended sexuality as a possible adaptation to compete for male material assistance, as well as why women represent an extreme within this field of study in human sexuality. Three waves of previous research are also included in this text, the first wave of discovering women's mid-cycle ovulation and triggering of estrogen, similar to other mammals; the second wave emphasizes women's sexuality functions for male material benefit and for conception; and wave three brought forth good-genes selection and intersexual conflict. I'm not completely sure what this book is about, it might bear out in a full reading, but it seems like it is making a case for estrus or heat in the biology of human female sexuality and how it is connected to conception, human male sexuality, exhibiting of sexual characteristics in biological development, etc. The authors are arguing for both estrus (heat) and concealed estrus, which resides outside of the ovulatory cycle (or estrous phase) and which they term extended sexuality.",

Research presented is pulled from the US and Western nations and comprises the last two decades (1973-1993). The authors look at sexual attitudes toward close relationships; how a relationship begins or is initiated; how sex is initiated or negotiated; sexual behaviors and sexual satisfaction; sexual and other characteristics that affect the close relationship; and sexual coercion in close relationships is explored. Gender differences between men and women are brought into the conversation as a salient theme among the research findings.",

"abstractNote": "An evolutionary psychology (EP) approach to partner selection among butch and femme lesbians and heterosexual men and women, that collects and uses data from personal ads to identify criteria important to these groups when selecting a partner. The authors provide compelling biological evidence of the similarity between heterosexual men and butch lesbians and heterosexual women and femme lesbians through a discussion of prenatal androgen exposure, which affects testosterone levels (although the authors also acknowledge that this may be impacted by environmental factors) and finger length of the right hand. This article seems to teeter on the edge between gender and sexuality, where the binary of butch/femme lesbian sexuality and male/female heterosexuality are examined through personal ads that concentrate on attractiveness, desire for financial stability, etc. This approach is intended to seek out traits/characteristics that are shared and/or similar between heterosexual men/butch lesbians and heterosexual women/femme lesbians. This study does pay heed in the very beginning to Social Exchange Theory (SET) as an alternative model to EP, which emphasizes the benefits sought out by heterosexual partners is socially constructed, and this study attempts to look at personal ads as a way to see if patterns coincide with EP and/or SET.",

"abstractNote": "This in-depth qualitative study explores how 16 resilient male survivors of serious childhood sexual abuse, representing a range of racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds, made meaning from their abuse experiences. Three main types of meaning making styles were identified in the narratives: meaning making through action, using cognitive strategies, and engaging spirituality. Meaning making through action included helping others and using creative expression to describe and process the abuse. Reasoning systems that helped survivors to understand why the abuse happened included developing a psychological framework for understanding the abuser or the role of the self in the abuse, using a sociocultural explanation, or developing a philosophical view. A few men made meaning through their spirituality. Meaning making styles seem to be related to experiences with therapy; the more experience these men had had with specialized trauma therapy, the more likely they were to make meaning by attempting to understand their perpetrators. In this study, men of color, regardless of socioeconomic class, were less likely than Caucasian men to have received specialized trauma therapy.",

Tracing the evolution of the pin-up from the 1860s, the author looks at the pin-up through a historical and cultural lens that is mediated by issues of sexuality, feminism, and popular culture. The evolution and re-emergence of the pin-up is situated throughout the historical treatment of this (American) cultural phenomenon, following through to the mutation from womyn to grrrls in the postmodern era.",

Bloodsworth-Lugo makes the claim that bodies are constructed by and resist historical, cultural, and social practices, rendering these bodies ambiguous. The author seeks to bring sexual difference theories and the body back into the conversation of race and ethnicity, classroom pedagogy, queer politics, and transgender experience. With this concentration on the body in sexual difference theories, there is also some treatment of the transgender body as exceeding the boundaries of what constitutes a normed body. The author seeks to preference ambiguity, both...and, and in-between bodies as the central focus of this text, rooting this in sexual difference theories.",
