Three-dimensional image-based techniques that combine close-range photogrammetry and automatic image matching are presently attracting a great deal of interest. This paper evaluates the feasibility of the application of photogrammetric three-dimensional modelling of an archaeological site with close-range automatic image-matching software and a consumer-grade digital camera. In order to correctly model upward-facing surfaces using this technique, the photographs were taken from the air with the camera in low-oblique position. A mast pole was used as camera platform to obtain low-altitude imagery. To verify the usefulness of this method it was applied to the hill fort ‘Castro de Formigueiros’, located in Lugo, Spain. In this case, low-cost automatic image-correlation photogrammetry has proved to be a powerful, cost-effective and versatile technique for the documentation, analysis and cultural dissemination of archaeological mapping. The mast used is inexpensive, easily transported and handled on site, and allows oblique photographs of the ground and wall-tops to be obtained at distances similar to photographs of vertical wall faces taken from the ground. As a result, the resolution and accuracy of the point clouds of all the surfaces of the final model are similar. Given the geometric peculiarities of hill forts (the occupied surface area, height, volume and distribution of the objects) and the relief (they are generally located in areas difficult to access and often on high ground), the mast is particularly suitable for photographing low-altitude imagery at archaeological sites, as the final accuracy of the three-dimensional model demonstrates. The tools that have been applied to the final digital model of the hill fort show the information analysis potential that can be obtained for archaeological work. When complemented by stereo-matching algorithms, detailed three-dimensional models can be built from such photograph collections in a fully automated way. Since 2010, a computer vision software package called PhotoScan has been available from the Russian manufacturer AgiSoft LLC. Even though the programme has a straightforward and simple interface, state-of-the-art SFM and other computer vision algorithms are implemented that enable PhotoScan to generate very dense and accurate three-dimensional meshes of various (archaeological) settings captured in two-dimensional imagery. Using a mixture of archaeological case studies, it will be shown that this low-cost application produces excellent results from aerial imagery in a minimum of time with almost no effort needed. Because of its solid and uncomplicated operation, it looks like this application could become an essential part of the aerial archaeologist's toolkit. Levi-Strauss discusses the \"grammar\" or set of rules that govern how language and culture interact.  This is a significant contribution to the idea of structuralism and how it can be applied.  Trigger discusses Levi-Strauss' contribution to archaeological theory on page 463.  His ideas (or portions of his ideas) have been used by postprocessual archaeologists in the form of idealist philosophy (the belief that thoughts and ideas are more important than the material world).

She argues that mathematical systems theories are too simple and are not fully developed to be used to understand the complex systems that are relevant to archaeologist.Lowe and Barth (1980) criticize Salmon (1978) her for this and believe she is contradicting herself.  According to them, Salmon makes the suggestion prior to this statement that simplicity of mathematical systems seen in physics may be beneficial to biology and archaeology if the correct variables are identified (Lowe and Barth 1980:570).  This is based on the idea that these events must be viewed in the proper perspective. Lowe and Barth argue then the proper perspective could be a mathematical system.

In his book, Robertson discusses the condition of cultural similarities around the world. He argues that when two groups share similar resources bases, their adaptability  responds in similar ways. Therefore, similarities between cultures are proofs to independent developments. He also discuss two research questions in culture ecology: “diffusion versus innovation and adaptive versus maladaptive cultural behavior”.

Marley Brown defines the field of study of “ethnoarchaeology,” that is the application of ethnographic studies to the past in order to gain insight into the archaeological record. Accord to Brown the primary shortcoming of this method is that it is primarily applied to non-industrial people and the prehistoric or contact period past. Brown argues that the application of ethnological methods and field studies should be applied across the board regardless of field situation. Brown argues that regardless this type of field work is simply oral history of material culture. Brown believes that when combined with participant-observation, documentary research, and excavation, the collection of oral history about material culture can contribute to analyses of change and continuity in the patterning of material environments. Brown sees the potential for this type of ethnoarchaeological research, be that oral history of material culture, as being especially pertinent to historical archaeology and the study of the recent past.

Brown uses the case study of Mott Farm and oral history thereof as an example of ethnoarchaeology in the recent past. Brown uses this to show that even though the style of ethnography is different. Not only can prehistoric archaeologists benefit from analogy or the direct historical approach but historical archaeologists can benefit from both material and cognitive and behavioral ethnography.

This collection of papers arose from the recognition that ethnographers and archaeologists were not adequately engaging in dialogue together to effectively approach studies of death and mortuary rituals.  The editor states that this is unacceptable because they ‘share the same four fundamental sets of data: treatment of the remains of the deceased; material culture worn, used, and carried by the living and the dead during rites; the built environment (the context of the mortuary ceremonies, the funerary structure or monument); and the specific ceremonies and practices in both primary and secondary mortuary rituals’ (p. 2).  Thus the two disciplines can greatly benefit by using each other’s ideas and theories as well as working together.  In this way, the fact that mortuary contexts are ‘sensuous arenas’ where collective/individual memories and identities are contested, presented, and reaffirmed.  The papers in this collection include such topics as social memory, specific ethnic ways of dealing with death, gender, mourning ceremonies as integrative mechanisms, the role of ritual, place in mortuary ritual, embodied memories of place and people, and social organization.

This article uses a feminist perspective to review research that has been done on gender archaeology. Within six approaches of gender, as a sociobiological strategy, as a social construction, as an evolutionary process, as a political economy, as agency, and as performance.  The authors feel it would be more valuable to associate a wide critique of feminist perspective on all gender research.  Their goal is to to find out how to do archaeology differently to benefit a more inclusive and imaginative way of realizing how the way we theorize and do methods can forward a feminist view point within archaeology.

For those who know very little about or wish to know more about NAGPRA from a skeletal perspective, this is one of the most comprehensive (and often cited) looks at its uses, limitations, and contributions.  It outlines which skeletal remains fall under the provisions of NAGPRA, the law itself, what it requires of the effected institutions, the methods used to comply, new techniques that were developed as result of its inception, what it means for relations with native populations, and most importantly what it means for future excavation.  NAGPRA has serious implications in not only bioarchaeology but archaeology as a whole.

Predictive modelling has been used in the U.S. to streamline CRM work, done with limited resources. Predictive modelling in Europe has been more targeted at modelying specific sites/systems. Variables considered in this analysis include topographic variables as well as social variables. Steward's approach utilizing cultural ecology considers many of the same principles when modeling a social system.

Predictive modelling has two basic approaches: inductive (build conclusions based on archaeological knowledge) and deductive (work from the theoretical level towards the data level).

Predictive modelling is applied to a set in Central Dalmatia, Croatia. Distinct ecological areas are idenified and studied based on archaeological material for reach regions. One question asked: how representative is today's environment for the past? There are topographic similarities, but beyond that it may be different. Resources determined (i.e. stream flow) incomparable were removed from analysis. Soil types related to site dispersion was disappointingly poor, likely because of great sedimentary change over time (erosion from vegetation change, etc). Elevation studies provided the most useful results, and site type demonstrated correlation with natural resources.

A study of occupation and rural farmsteads from the 1830s to 1940 located in North Central Texas along the Richland/Chambers Reservoir. This study implores Dendrochronological applications as well as typology, faunal analysis, landscape archaeology and material remains to recreate the lives of these rural farmsteads.

Instead of going down the usual route of studying ceramics style and function, these authors believe that it is better spent their time looking at the causal factors to why the ceramic artifacts exist.  By changing the way we look and study artifact's design, they are changing the way people explain them.  They are using a different theoretical frame work than previously used by others who have studied this own subject as a way of asking new questions to obtain new answers.  Focusing on the performance and  interactions that are, people-people, people-artifact, artifact-artifact. Through a behavioral outlook, they look at the artisan.  They ask what affects the artisan.  For example feedback from others, the artisan’s own knowledge and experience on ceramics.  The artisan can only have a set amount of knowledge. And also what affects the artifact itself, meaning what technological constraints or social processes could have affected the development of this artifact. Not so much cultural.  But how everyday life can affect the artifact.

This article begins by investigating the relationship between modeling and method and theory. Dr. Kvamme and Dr. Limp are sourced early in the article alongside Hodder, Orton, Clark, Kohler, Parker, and Cart.  Site location models are central to this investigation as well as food resources, seasonality, and settlement patterns.  Ethnographic data is incorporated.  Many sites are exampled in the archaeological data. Occupation intensity in sites are compared. Structural relationship between variables are considered.  Three models provide different data on the sites with different multivocal goals fro multiple lines of modeling data.

The author looks at citational practices to consider how feminist and queer theories are related to sexuality investigations in the archaeological record.  The emergence and history of gender in archaeology is discussed. A set of epistemological issues shifted feminist attention towards looking at the differences between women during the 1980s and 1990s through analysis of race, class, etc.  The history of feminist archaeology and queer theory history are examined and then intertwined to look at gender in the archaeological record.  The author strongly argues for the usage of the two theories together in analyzing the archaeological record but recognizes the two will not always be adequate in every situation.
