The keynote includes recent empirical results and recommendations for good practice and further research. In particular, the paper is based on an assessment of 864 print and electronic dissertations in sciences, social sciences and humanities from the Universities of Lille (France) and Ljubljana (Slovenia), submitted between 1987 and 2015, and on a survey on data management with 270 scientists in social sciences and humanities of the University of Lille 3. The keynote starts with an introduction into data-driven science, data life cycle and data publishing. It then moves on to research data management by PhD students, their practice, their needs and their willingness to disseminate and share their data. After this qualitative analysis of information behaviour, we present the results of a quantitative assessment of research data produced and submitted with dissertations Special attention is paid to the size of the research data in appendices, to their presentation and link to the text, to their sources and typology, and to their potential for further research. The discussion puts the focus on legal aspects (database protection, intellectual property, privacy, third-party rights) and other barriers to data sharing, reuse and dissemination through open access. Another part adds insight into the potential handling of these data, in the framework of the French and Slovenian dissertation infrastructures. What could be done to valorise these data in a centralized system for electronic theses and dissertations (ETDs)? The topics are formats, metadata (including attribution of unique identifiers), submission/deposit, long-term preservation and dissemination. This part will also draw on experiences from other campuses and make use of results from surveys on data management at the Universities of Berlin and Lille. The conclusion provides some recommendations for the assistance and advice to PhD students in managing and depositing their research data, and also for further research. Our study will be helpful for academic libraries to develop assistance and advice for PhD students in managing their research data, in collaboration with the research structures and the graduate schools. Moreover, it should be helpful to prepare and select research data for long-term preservation, curate research data in open repositories and design data repositories. The French part of paper is part of an ongoing research project at the University of Lille 3 (France) in the field of digital humanities and research data, conducted with scientists and academic librarians. Its preliminary results have been presented at a conference on research data in February 2015 at Lille, at the 8th Conference on Grey Literature and Repositories at Prague in October 2015 and published in the Journal of Librarianship and Scholarly Communication. Produites dans le cadre des projets de recherche, ces données posent des questions inédites aux laboratoires, bibliothèques et services informatiques des universités : comment conserver ces données, comment les signaler et mettre à disposition d’autres chercheurs, comment faire le lien avec les publications, comment les intégrer dans une politique du libre accès à l’information scientifique ? Avant de se lancer dans un projet de données de la recherche, un établissement doit faire un état des lieux sur le terrain pour mieux connaître les producteurs de ces données, leurs pratiques et besoins dans la gestion des données et leurs outils, mais aussi la nature concrète de ces données. L’Université de Lille 3 a réalisé une étude sur les pratiques, besoins et attentes en matière de gestion des données de la recherche auprès de son personnel scientifique. L’étude est pilotée par le laboratoire GERiiCO et le SCD de Lille 3. Elle fait partie d’une démarche concertée en faveur de la gestion et du partage des données de la recherche mise en œuvre à partir de 2013, avec plusieurs analyses, séminaires et publications. L’enquête a été préparée avec l’Université Humboldt de Berlin. Le questionnaire contient 22 questions et a été mis en ligne en avril et mai 2015. Il a reçu 270 réponses (taux de réponse 15%). Toutes les disciplines sont représentées, ainsi que toutes les catégories des personnels scientifiques. Les personnes interrogées décrivent un large éventail de données sources. Les corpus (documents textuels) sont de loin la source la plus importante (64%), suivi par les enquêtes et entretiens (47%), observations (41%), expériences (36%) et archives (34%). Quant à la typologie des données produites par les chercheurs comme résultat de leur travail, les données textuelles occupent de loin le premier rang (75%), suivies des tableaux (49%), bases de données (37%), visualisations ou modèles multidimensionnels (32%) et données AV (photo, son, vidéo), avec 20-25%. Le stockage en local est de loin le mode de sauvegarde privilégié, choisi par 207 participants, que ce soit sur leur ordinateur privé pour 83% des répondants, ou sur leur ordinateur professionnel pour 49% d’entre eux. 40 répondants (19%) stockent « dans le cloud », alors que 8% ont des données sur le serveur d’une autre institution. En réseau, 12% des répondants se tournent vers le serveur de l’université. La majorité ne partage pas ses données avec d’autres. Et ceux qui le font, partagent d’abord et surtout avec les collègues du groupe de travail (équipe scientifique) (34%). Très peu (<5%) ouvrent leurs données davantage et partagent avec l’institution, d’autres chercheurs ou « tout le monde », dans une démarche open data au sens strict du terme. 36% ont déjà pratiqué, d’une manière ou d’une autre, le partage des données – que ce soit avec les collègues d’une équipe scientifique ou d’un projet, via une archive ouverte ou lors de la publication d’un article, ou en téléchargeant les résultats d’autres chercheurs. Apparemment, 20-25% ont davantage d’expérience que les autres (« précurseurs »). 18% autres répondants se disent prêts et ont l’intention d’adopter ces pratiques à l’avenir (« motivés »). 5-10% indiquent qu’ils n’ont pas l’intention de partager leurs données à l’avenir (« réticents »). 30% manquent d’information et de connaissance concernant le partage des données de la recherche (« ignorants »). En tête de la liste des besoins figure l’espace d’archivage sécurisé et fiable pour ses propres données, suivi des conseils pour la gestion, des conseils techniques (normes, métadonnées etc.) et des conseils juridiques (autour de 50%). Moins nombreux sont les chercheurs qui souhaitent des conseils ou de l’assistance pour la publication ou diffusion des données (autour de 40%), encore moins ceux qui demandent de l’aide pour préparer un plan de gestion (29%) ou un conseil dans le domaine de l’éthique (24%). Les résultats ont été analysés par rapport aux disciplines et statuts des personnes interrogées. Ils ont été également comparés avec les résultats de trois autres enquêtes (Berlin, Strasbourg, LIBER Europe). A l’issue de l’enquête, nous allons mener des interviews avec un échantillon restreint d’enseignants-chercheurs et doctorants volontaires, afin de mieux connaître certains pratiques et besoins et aussi, pour valider les résultats de l’enquête. En même temps, nous allons contribuer à développer une offre de service sur le campus de l’Université de Lille 3 pour accompagner et faciliter la gestion des données de la recherche des équipes scientifiques. Moreover, even when humanities researchers publish their data in repositories and archives, these data are often hard to find and use by other researchers in the field. This report gives an overview of the various aspects that are connected to open access publishing of research data in the humanities. After the introduction, where we give definitions of key concepts, we describe the research data life cycle. We present an overview of the different stakeholders involved and we look into advantages and obstacles for researchers to share research data. Furthermore, a description of the European data repositories is given, followed by certification standards of trusted digital data repositories. The possibility of data citation is important for sharing open data and is also described in this report. We also discuss the standards and use of metadata in the humanities. Finally, we discuss best practice example of open access research data system in the humanities: the French open research data ecosystem. With this report we provide information and guidance on open access publishing of humanities research data for researchers. Ces différents services génèrent potentiellement de grandes quantités de données qu'il est nécessaire de gérer et documenter. En particulier, il semble utile de travailler à la constitution d'un réservoir de telles données qui soit consultable par une large communauté de chercheurs, notamment en sciences humaines. On peut ainsi penser au rôle que peuvent jouer des analyses précises d'une oeuvre pour un historien des arts qui souhaite étudier l'évolution de la technique d'un peintre par exemple. La mise en place d'une telle infrastructure de données réutilisables dans le domaine du patrimoine matériel se heurte cependant à plusieurs difficultés que nous essayons de réduire au sein du projet Iperion. Tout d'abord, il n'est pas nécessairement dans la culture du déploiement des équipements eux-mêmes d'envisager une réutilisation large des données. Le scénario de base est souvent celui d'un chercheur qui va conduire une analyse ciblée d'un objet patrimonial, pour ensuite exploiter lui-même les résultats correspondants et passer à l'analyse suivante, sans se préoccuper d'une réutilisation des données produites. Ensuite, du point de vue des formats de données, on observe l'absence de réels standards de représentation communs aux différents types d'équipements. On se retrouve ainsi à devoir gérer des données propriétaires qui dépendent principalement des constructeurs des équipements. Enfin, se posele problème complexe des droits d'utilisation qui combinent un ensemble de difficultés liées au statut des oeuvres elles-mêmes, aux règles régissant l'équipement, mais aussi à la volonté de partage du chercheur qui a effectué le recueil initial des données. Dans ce cadre, notre objectif est de mettre en place une démarche d'analyse de l'état des lieux et de proposition de principes communs de gestion des données au sein du projet. Il s'agirait ainsi de préfigurer une charte de gestion des données applicable à la future infrastructure européenne E-RIHS, en collaboration avec l'infrastructure numérique DARIAH en sciences humaines. Nous avons ainsi recueilli les réponses des différents partenaires du projet concernant à la fois les modes de gestion des équipements, et le statut des jeux de données disponibles. La variété des réponses obtenues montre déjà que seules des recommandations génériques pourront être produites à l'échelle européenne, et nous esquisserons quelques propositions dans ce sens. Laurent Romary est directeur de recherche à Inria où il mène des recherches dans le domaine des humanités numériques et plus particulièrement sur la modélisation et la représentation de données en sciences humaines et sociales. Depuis plusieurs années, il a contribué à la définition des politiques d'information scientifique du CNRS, de la société Max Planck et d'Inria, où il a contribué notamment à la définition d'une obligation de dépôt en archives ouvertes dans HAL. Il a aussi participé de longue date à la définition et à l'évolution des directives de la TEI (Text Encoding Initiative), notamment comme membre, mais aussi comme président du conseil technique de la TEI, et préside le comité 37 de l'ISO (Organisation international de normalisation).
