Neben der unterschiedlichen Programmiersprache unterscheiden sich diese sehr in ihrer grundsätzlichen Herangehensweise an das Metadatenmanagement. Neben rein dateibasierten Werkzeugen gibt es vollständige Middleware, die auch die Speicherung der Metadaten in einem leistungsfähigen Backend umfasst. Erfreulicherweise sind diese Softwarepakete durchgängig als Open Source Software unter freien Lizenzen verfügbar und können so von jedermann kostenfrei genutzt und bei Bedarf auch an eigene Bedürfnisse angepasst werden. Im Vortrag werden mehrere Pakete genauer vorgestellt und ein praktischer Bericht zu Besonderheiten bei Installation und Nutzung gegeben.
