This paper analyses 204 Swiss newspaper articles reporting collisions between car drivers and cyclists. Our analysis shows that these reports reproduce discursive biases rooted in motonormativity. Cyclists are placed at the center of the narrative, while motorists are either omitted or reduced to their vehicles. Passive voice, non-agentive phrasing, and objectifying language implicitly shift blame towards cyclists. Systemic causes are rarely mentioned. In this Interventions collection, we collaboratively search for paths toward visionary lifeworlds, taking the entangled commons as a commitment to coexistence, diversity, inclusion and a critical look at (un)common sense. Contributions address a temporality of urgency, knowledge co-production, more-than-human relations, and the matters and materialities of care in conceptually, physically and technologically interconnected worlds. In this editorial introduction, I develop two interrelated frameworks to ground these explorations: infrastructures of sociality and care matters in the entangled commons. I examine how crises transform the relational arrangements through which collective life takes shape. Moving beyond human-centric notions of shared resources, I introduce entangled commons as a framework to understand how social, physical and digital dimensions interweave in urgent times, demanding new approaches to design, governance and collective action. While some people find peace in spending time alone in public places, finding solitude can be challenging. Through the lens of social infrastructure and third places, I examine how dining establishments in Basel, Switzerland, influence the experience of dining alone. Ethnographic field notes from my students, as well as my own observations, show that seating arrangements, formality and atmosphere affect how comfortable people feel when dining alone. While many venues implicitly favour groups, few cater explicitly for solo diners, leaving them feeling uncomfortable and exposed. Certaines d’entre elles laissent toutefois en arrière-plan les influences historiques et politiques du rapport sensible à l’espace. Bien que l’affectivité semble relever de l’individu, elle est en effet façonnée par une culture sensible et affective partagée. Le vécu sensible des lieux n’est pas seulement une réaction immédiate mais se construit aussi sur des souvenirs et des expériences accumulées. Ce rapport sensible révèle donc un enjeu de soi, contribuant à la formation d’une identité « en situation » qui évolue en fonction des contextes microsociaux et macrosociaux environnants. À partir d’une enquête menée à Rennes entre 2017 et 2023 croisant approches in situ et ex situ, nous avons mis en évidence l’importance de la constitution d’une culture sonore partagée, qui se construit au fil des interactions sociales et qui permet aux individus de définir un espace sonore commun, chargé affectivement et symboliquement. Afin de prolonger cette recherche, nous proposons un guide d’observation et d’analyse des situations sensibles en milieu urbain, pouvant permettre d’analyser la relation sensible des individus à leur environ- nement. I focus on a seemingly marginal topic—urban weeds—to explore how human–weed relations can help us situate contemporary environmental concerns within longer histories of spatial violence, ecological degradation and settler power relations. Shifting perceptions of invasive and native weeds unsettle normative frameworks of urban biodiversity and reveal how polluted ecologies can be reinterpreted as sites of value and resistance. Here, I use wasteland activism to define grassroots efforts to protect unconventional, often stigmatized forms of urban nature from erasure within ongoing processes of urban redevelopment. Wasteland activism not only challenges official green transition narratives but also produces alternative visions of ‘worthy environments’ that expose the inherent contradictions of top-down narratives of repair and growth. Municipal government abetted capital growth by adopting an unquestioned acceptance that what was good for business was good for the public. Crucially, the “public” in the postbellum United States was not a utopic or abstracted sanctuary in which a cohesive citizenry gained equal access. In this paper, we consider why this may be the case. Building on recent scholarship investigating more-than-human care infrastructure (Alam & Houston, 2020; Power & Williams, 2020; Power & Mee, 2020), we consider the socio-material relations that enable (and limit) care of, and by, FPT in the urban context. To do so, we draw on document analysis and interviews with council staff in metropolitan Melbourne to unpack how FPT come to be understood as offering and deserving of care (or not), and how such characterisations impact if, and how, FPT come to be ‘welcome’ in urban public places. Our analysis, first, highlights dominant ways in which urban trees are understood through local government strategy and policy, and how an orientation towards (care-through) canopy works to exclude FPT. Second, we explore competing valuations of FPT and their capacity to contribute to sustainable cities. Across these accounts, FPT care and belonging remains ambiguous and contested. Third, we examine actual and imagined relations of FPT care and belonging, and how these work with but also remain limited by, dominant strategic directions and norms. Yet even though substantial research on mobility has been undertaken, particularly in recent years through the ‘mobilities turn’, limited attention has been paid in geography or mobility studies to mobility's place-based aspects. We argue that including the concept of place is critical to advance sustainable mobility. Unlocking more sustainable forms of mobility is a necessary part of climate action, progressing climate goals, and enhancing liveability and human wellbeing. To date, many sustainable mobility policies have mostly been top-down, responding to international or national imperatives and focussed on critical infrastructure development and active travel. Very often they are presented as ‘one size fits all’ solutions that fail to account for local, place-based and social differences impacting on uptake and social acceptability. We argue that mobility needs to be better understood through the lens of the lived experience as an embodied, differentiated and political process. Further, a place-based approach to sustainable mobility is required to achieve meaningful behavioural change and more explicit attention needs to be focussed on the intersection of place and mobility. For transformative policy shifts at national and other scales to have real-world impact, they must be informed by the local context. The research reviewed here supports our argument that for sustainable mobility to succeed, more attention needs to be paid to place, and the everyday aspects of movement. A place-based approach to sustainable mobility should be locally grounded, place specific, and take into account place characteristics and capabilities. Seventy percent of land is expected to change hands in the next 20 years, with many existing farmers ready to retire and lacking heirs interested in agriculture. This moment is not lost on financial institutions, which are buying up land in search of new sources of rentier profit, further fueling land concentration. At the same time, beginning farmers are struggling to access land and movements for racial justice have contributed to a growing recognition of ongoing inequities in distribution. These trends have converged to result in an increasing number of land access initiatives, as well as a new wave of scholarship on land access, land justice, and land reform in the US context. In doing so, the article has the merit of moving beyond a merely place-based understanding of today’s regional inequality phenomenon, constructed around the undifferentiated notion of ‘left-behind places’. However, despite embracing a people-based perspective, the article offers a response to the liveability crisis centred on a conventional place-based approach to public policy. I argue that a place-based approach to public policy on liveability can have the effect of increasing the attractiveness of some places and, in doing so, of fomenting phenomena of inter-place competitiveness. Population decline and out-migration are widely recognised as key consequences. However, some peripheral regions are also experiencing repopulation, evidently driven by lifestyle-led mobilities. To date, this trend has largely been examined from a demand perspective, focusing on macro-level factors such as improved economic opportunities, attractive landscapes and appealing sociocultural or leisure environments. Nevertheless, theoretical discourse remains limited on why certain rural-peripheral regions are (un)able to repopulate, beyond (macro)economic factors and demand issues. Drawing on a micro-level analysis of vacant mountain farmhouses, we unpack supply-side barriers to rural repopulation. Analysis is based on interviews conducted with vacancy owners in the Alpine municipality of Innervillgraten (Tyrol, Austria). Findings reveal strong attachment to land and buildings ingrained over generations, financial security and delayed inner-familial or denied extra-familial transfers as key barriers to housing revitalisation. These micro-level factors consequently impede municipal repopulation through in-migration. We further identify the entanglement of micro- and meso-level factors that secondly promote municipal vacancy: owners' reluctance to mobilise their property is supported by policies—the restriction of second homes and pro-local land transfer laws—and vice versa. As we conclude, it is not the lack of demand for vacant housing but rather the entrenched place-based attachment to land on the supply side that may hinder the impetus for rural repopulation beyond our specific case. This study introduces Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) to assess the performance of 12 European cities with diverse socio-economic and transport characteristics. The analysis incorporates three inputs (GDP/capita, LEZ ratio, and access strictness) and three outputs (two pollutants and the compliance rate) to capture the comprehensive efficiency of LEZs. All analyses were conducted by DEAP software, adopting an output-oriented approach. The results highlight the effectiveness and practicality of DEA in evaluating LEZ efficiency. In addition to providing reflections across time, it discusses the situation that Tamsma introduces the Netherlands periphery (the North) from the perspective of researching peripheral regions in Sweden, where we are used to working within a very different logic and scale regarding peripheral regions, including the challenges they face. Reflecting on a 50-year-old paper across time and space also invokes personal reflections on the issues around academic practice. Focusing primarily on the experiences of pregnancy and early motherhood - particularly in relation to babies and toddlers - it reviews and unites literature on motherhood on the move and ‘caringscapes’, including caring and care-full cities and compassionate communities. While existing literature on compassionate communities has largely focused on the frail, elderly, and those with disabilities or life-limiting conditions, this paper highlights the need to also address the specific needs of mothers. It emphasises maternal physical, emotional, and mental health as key considerations in designing care-full urban environments.
