"abstractNote": "Experiencing crises, such as the pandemic, has affected infrastructures of sociality and intensified social and spatial inequities while revealing the fragility of systems we depend upon. In this Interventions collection, we collaboratively search for paths toward visionary lifeworlds, taking the entangled commons as a commitment to coexistence, diversity, inclusion and a critical look at (un)common sense. Contributions address a temporality of urgency, knowledge co-production, more-than-human relations, and the matters and materialities of care in conceptually, physically and technologically interconnected worlds. In this editorial introduction, I develop two interrelated frameworks to ground these explorations: infrastructures of sociality and care matters in the entangled commons. I examine how crises transform the relational arrangements through which collective life takes shape. Moving beyond human-centric notions of shared resources, I introduce entangled commons as a framework to understand how social, physical and digital dimensions interweave in urgent times, demanding new approaches to design, governance and collective action. Entangled commons emerge through the infrastructural arrangements created to navigate crisis and precarity, incorporating more-than-human actors and agency as part of care-full practices that recognize the interconnectedness of human and planetary health and our fundamental interdependence.",

"abstractNote": "Urban loneliness can manifest in various ways, and social connection is not always the solution. While some people find peace in spending time alone in public places, finding solitude can be challenging. Through the lens of social infrastructure and third places, I examine how dining establishments in Basel, Switzerland, influence the experience of dining alone. Ethnographic field notes from my students, as well as my own observations, show that seating arrangements, formality and atmosphere affect how comfortable people feel when dining alone. While many venues implicitly favour groups, few cater explicitly for solo diners, leaving them feeling uncomfortable and exposed. Against the backdrop of broader discussions on the temporality of loneliness, I argue for integrating solitude into both public and quasi-public spaces to help reduce the loneliness associated with the stigma of being alone.",

I examine care and commodified public infrastructures in heritage cities facing mass tourism and climate change effects by zooming in on effects of entangled commons at the micro-spatial level (public furniture), meso level of the neighbourhood (public buildings) and macro level of infrastructure decisions (cruise ships and harbour areas) that affect both the ecosystem and everyday life. I also discuss the role local initiatives play who are fighting for the right to the city. My ongoing ethnographic fieldwork since 2019 forms the empirical basis.",

"abstractNote": "Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork in Montreal, this article examines the ways in which urban dwellers and activists engage with the living materialities of wastelands to illuminate evolving ecological imaginaries and their political potentials. I focus on a seemingly marginal topic—urban weeds—to explore how human–weed relations can help us situate contemporary environmental concerns within longer histories of spatial violence, ecological degradation and settler power relations. Shifting perceptions of invasive and native weeds unsettle normative frameworks of urban biodiversity and reveal how polluted ecologies can be reinterpreted as sites of value and resistance. Here, I use wasteland activism to define grassroots efforts to protect unconventional, often stigmatized forms of urban nature from erasure within ongoing processes of urban redevelopment. Wasteland activism not only challenges official green transition narratives but also produces alternative visions of ‘worthy environments’ that expose the inherent contradictions of top-down narratives of repair and growth. In contexts where industrialism, far from belonging to the past, is very much an ongoing project, political weeds embody the disjuncture between institutional promises of green development and the slow work of building living presents amid enduring contamination.",

While this dynamic might sound familiarly current, this article details how its roots were well visible in the post-Civil War United States. Municipal government abetted capital growth by adopting an unquestioned acceptance that what was good for business was good for the public. Crucially, the “public” in the postbellum United States was not a utopic or abstracted sanctuary in which a cohesive citizenry gained equal access. In investigating the uneven deployment of resources allocated by city agencies and emergent inequalities within booming commercial relations, it becomes clear that the public good referred to the output generated through the marriage between local government, capital, and municipal police.",

"abstractNote": "This paper argues for the importance of centring mothers in the design and conceptualisation of ‘care-full’ and compassionate cities and communities. Focusing primarily on the experiences of pregnancy and early motherhood - particularly in relation to babies and toddlers - it reviews and unites literature on motherhood on the move and ‘caringscapes’, including caring and care-full cities and compassionate communities. While existing literature on compassionate communities has largely focused on the frail, elderly, and those with disabilities or life-limiting conditions, this paper highlights the need to also address the specific needs of mothers. It emphasises maternal physical, emotional, and mental health as key considerations in designing care-full urban environments. The paper advocates for mobility designs that prioritise mothers - whether they are travelling with or without their young children - within the framework of care-full cities and compassionate communities, aiming to create more mother-friendly cities that possess distinct qualities beyond those of child-friendly cities.",

"abstractNote": "Recently, spatial sorting of well-being at the neighbourhood level has received attention. As most studies merely focus on the distribution itself or one neighbourhood aspect in relation to well-being, this study examined well-being by neighbourhood type, and how residents’ attitudes to the neighbourhood might influence this relationship. The study uses a survey based on a sample of residents stratified among ten different neighbourhood types. We find that residents living in or near low-income, high migration and high unemployment neighbourhoods experience lower well-being. This association disappears if controls for attitudes to the neighbourhood are included. Residents in homogeneously Swedish areas experience lower well-being that cannot be explained by neighbourhood attitudes. We concluded that there is a heterogeneous spatial sorting of well-being. These findings illustrated the importance of the neighbourhood for individual well-being and suggested that the spatial sorting of people is not only associated with economic prospects but also emotional life.",

"abstractNote": "A growing scientific literature acknowledges the difficulty to apply the ‘smart city’ concept to rural and remote areas. Whereas the emergence of the ‘Smart Villages’, a term endorsed by the European Commission, seeks to promote a more place-based approach, it remains unaddressed whether a unique ‘Smart Villages’ concept can accommodate the wide plethora of rural territories. Through recent initiatives like the ‘Smart Islands’ and the ‘Smart Mountains’ Sila Declaration, rural communities themselves have attempted to define rural ‘smartness’ based on their territorial features. This article examines the ongoing attempts to tailor smartness to diverse rural territories. Specifically, through the analysis of EU-level documents, this article investigates how territories covered under Article 174 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union – for which the European Cohesion Policy devote a ‘special attention’ (i.e. ‘northernmost regions with very low population density and island, cross-border and mountain regions’) – conceptualize smartness applied to the unique specificities of these territories and what this implies for territorial development.",

"abstractNote": "This paper is concerned with the role that urban cultural festivals play in enhancing the quality and vitality of social life. It acknowledges that their reputation has become tarnished in recent years and that festivals now frequently feature in debates because they are charged with inciting tensions, exclusions and contestations. However, of note here is that cities tend to narrowly conceive of festivals as temporarily bounded moments of commodifiable spectacle. The fact that festivals function, on an ongoing manner, as embedded, sustained practices capable of supporting urban social living in numerous ordinary ways is rarely acknowledged, much less prioritised. This paper tries to shift prevailing thinking by advocating an understanding of festivals as embedded socio-cultural practices. Specifically, it argues that festivals can be conceived as social infrastructure that comprise distinct but entirely inter-connected components: material/built forms, socio-cultural materialities and immaterialities constructed through year-round practices and, social spaces constructed and enhanced in the moment of their staging. As well as underscoring the societal importance of festivals, using infrastructure as a framing idea helps develop a better understanding of how festivals function to support the socio-cultural well-being, vitality and engagement of urban dwellers.",

"abstractNote": "This article explores a novel unstable form of middle-class place belonging as exemplified in London's East Village—the former 2012 Olympics Athletes’ Village and the first neighbourhood developed at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. I conceptualize this form as ‘temporary belonging’ and engage with Bourdieu's underutilized insights, particularly housing corporations’ ability to impose their priorities on affluent homeseekers through their unconscious complicity. This approach illuminates questions of place-production within the context of fifth-wave gentrification, characterized by the complementary roles of finance and states in restructuring urban space. Drawing on interviews with a manager and residents, alongside documentary analysis, the study reveals that the East Village's corporate landlord employs place-production and advertising strategies that prioritize the dispositions of middle-class individuals. However, this is primarily motivated by the neighbourhood's value as a long-term investment. Middle-class residents describe East Village as a ‘unique’ place to live. Nonetheless, their narratives of belonging carry a distinct element of temporal limitation. They experience tensions between the neighbourhood's appeal, their household circumstances and their long-term residential aspirations. ‘Temporary belonging’ thus encapsulates their response to the conditions and constraints they encounter in the neighbourhood field, as structured by the landlord.",

"abstractNote": "With this paper we directly address critiques made of mainstream, self-defined Economic Geography as a ‘male, pale and stale’ subdiscipline, proposing that more constructive conversations require open-mindedness, diversity and curiosity. To develop this argument, we draw on scholarship across feminist economic geographies and feminist studies more broadly, presenting new directions and possibilities for overlap. More specifically, inspired by McDowell (2016), we outline three areas offering exciting possibilities for further exploration of the who, what and how of economic geographical research: (i) intersectionality, (ii) diverse economies, and (iii) embodied and sensory geographies. While having already piqued the interest of some economic geographers, these research areas hold great potential for exciting intra- and interdisciplinary conversations. With our conclusions we note the timeliness of this agenda for the real-world application of economic geographies.",

"abstractNote": "Loneliness increasingly features in public discourse as a pressing health issue. Loneliness manifests as a feeling of being separate, distanced or isolated, and it is therefore a profoundly spatial phenomenon. Yet, engagement with experiences of loneliness has been sporadic in the discipline of geography. This paper develops the concept of loneliness geographically as a way to research the places, relationships, routines, infrastructures and mobilities that deepen or soften experiences of loneliness. In pulling together isolated strands of inquiry within and beyond human geography, it highlights three avenues of spatial inquiry into loneliness that will strengthen research efforts in this field: the structural and political causes of emotions; the spatial and temporal dimensions of social infrastructures; and the affordances of differently situated social relationships. A geographical approach to the study of loneliness as a feeling of connection that is situated in place offers social scientists new avenues for understanding how loneliness is enabled and experienced, and how it might be prevented and abated.",

"abstractNote": "Urban chicken-keeping is on the rise in London, in private gardens, community gardens, allotments, schools, and urban farm projects. In welcoming chickens into the city, urban spaces are being transformed: coops are being built, runs constructed, chicken-friendly flora introduced, and space landscaped to accommodate both chickens and humans. Underneath the design of these multispecies urban spaces, there is a desire to bring the good life into the city, through a return to nature. Chicken-keeping is being lauded by urban keepers and commentators alike as a response to urban crises over food provenance and quality, environmental ethics, and a growing unease with industrial agriculture. However, after chickens arrive in these urban spaces, it becomes quickly apparent that the design of the urban barnyard imposed by the human is rarely practical for, or enjoyed by, chickens: perfectly laid lawns are torn up, plants are demolished, and vegetable patches are gorged on, and chickens are at the mercy of local foxes. When chickens enter these urban barnyards, they demand humans pay attention to their desires, behaviours, and territoriality by overflowing and expanding their assigned space. As such, designing the urban barnyard is an ongoing spatio-temporal iterative process between chickens, humans, and other non-human actors in the more-than-human city. In this paper, using the case of the urban chicken, I argue that more-than-human (urban) geographies can find generative collaborations with design thinking in theorising human–environmental relationalities.",

"abstractNote": "Inspired by Gunnar Olsson, this article critiques the use of cartographic reason in the process of creating an accessible city for people with disabilities. It also borrows Gregory's ontological conceptual pair of cartography and corpography, showing the ontological transformations that occur within this pair during the practical removal of barriers to mobility in Brno, Czech Republic. The methodology employed involves semi-structured interviews with members of the city's Advisory Board for Accessibility. Our primary aim is to demonstrate how the imperative to eliminate specific barriers in the urban environment responds to the dominance of cartographic reason in planning and political decision-making. Findings indicate that this dominance often obscures the fact that what may appear as safely accessible in cartographic representations can manifest as inaccessible and hazardous corpography. However, the cartographic visualizations serve as the initial driving force behind bringing about potential improvements in corpographic accessibility. Urban space is mapped into myriad legal and political areas, which complicates accessibility. The cartography of accessibility is becoming utopian, and, through a critique of utopia, we show how a corpographic emphasis on multisensory experience can make the city more effectively accessible. We introduce the concept of a ferryman, one who facilitates navigation through urban space.",

"abstractNote": "As sustainable tourism gains momentum, understanding the impact of Cittaslow promotion on tourist behavior is crucial yet remains unexplored. This study addresses this gap by investigating the effect of Cittaslow promotion on tourists’ behavioral responses, especially within social media contexts and small urban tourism destinations. Applying signaling theory, we conducted a field experiment with real Instagram advertisements (n1 = 51,089 impressions) and an online experiment (n2 = 212). Results reveal that Cittaslow promotion campaign directly enhances tourists’ interest in the Cittaslow destination, willingness to visit, and likelihood to recommend. Furthermore, Cittaslow promotion indirectly influences these behaviors through destination brand identification, brand quality, and brand attachment. Notably, the serial mediation effect through destination brand quality and attachment is stronger for travelers with a higher need for restoration. These insights suggest that small urban tourism destinations can enhance tourist interest in the destination, brand identification, and brand quality, and foster emotional bonds through Cittaslow promotion campaigns.",

"abstractNote": "Academic discourses on housing financialization view the state as playing a pivotal facilitation role, primarily through establishing institutional arrangements conducive to global financial interests. Drawing on a Poulantzian-inspired reading of capital and the state as a social relation, this paper evidences a more complex and dialectical state-investor nexus in housing financialization, shaped by contingent and path-dependent dynamics. By juxtaposing Athens and Barcelona – two cities profoundly impacted by the global financial crisis (GFC) and socio-spatially reshaped by consequential debt management politics – we identify a variety of state interventions that pertain to different kinds of structural or strategic selectivities across spatial scales that both facilitate and constrain the financialization of housing at different points in time. In Athens, the central state initially protected local financial interests from debt securitization and indebted households from home repossessions, while simultaneously preparing the ground for future financialization that has recently taken off amid economic recovery and a major touristification drive. In Barcelona, the central state’s restructuring of the banking system and its facilitation of mass mortgage repossessions that enabled international investors to decisively enter the city’s housing market, generated powerful urban social movements at the regional and city scale that won new local policies for affordable housing provision. In both cities, financial actors were able to recalibrate their investment strategies in fluctuating institutional and market settings. We conclude that the trajectory of housing financialization and state-investor relations is far more variegated and open to alternative pathways than generally understood, reinforcing the need for more nuanced understandings of the path-dependency of the process.",
