"abstractNote": "Media reports of collisions both reflect and shape public understanding of road safety. This paper analyses 204 Swiss newspaper articles reporting collisions between car drivers and cyclists. Our analysis shows that these reports reproduce discursive biases rooted in motonormativity. Cyclists are placed at the center of the narrative, while motorists are either omitted or reduced to their vehicles. Passive voice, non-agentive phrasing, and objectifying language implicitly shift blame towards cyclists. Systemic causes are rarely mentioned. Making these biases visible is essential for challenging motonormativity and reframing collisions in ways that promote safer, fairer, and more human-centered mobility.",

"abstractNote": "How, why and where people move, and the larger processes that impact these decisions, are key concerns within the discipline of geography. Yet even though substantial research on mobility has been undertaken, particularly in recent years through the ‘mobilities turn’, limited attention has been paid in geography or mobility studies to mobility's place-based aspects. We argue that including the concept of place is critical to advance sustainable mobility. Unlocking more sustainable forms of mobility is a necessary part of climate action, progressing climate goals, and enhancing liveability and human wellbeing. To date, many sustainable mobility policies have mostly been top-down, responding to international or national imperatives and focussed on critical infrastructure development and active travel. Very often they are presented as ‘one size fits all’ solutions that fail to account for local, place-based and social differences impacting on uptake and social acceptability. We argue that mobility needs to be better understood through the lens of the lived experience as an embodied, differentiated and political process. Further, a place-based approach to sustainable mobility is required to achieve meaningful behavioural change and more explicit attention needs to be focussed on the intersection of place and mobility. For transformative policy shifts at national and other scales to have real-world impact, they must be informed by the local context. The research reviewed here supports our argument that for sustainable mobility to succeed, more attention needs to be paid to place, and the everyday aspects of movement. A place-based approach to sustainable mobility should be locally grounded, place specific, and take into account place characteristics and capabilities. We argue that for sustainable mobility policies to enable impactful change, place must be central to thinking, planning and practice.",

"abstractNote": "Industrialisation and globalisation have brought about profound changes in the demographic, socio-economic and consequently housing structures of European rural areas. Population decline and out-migration are widely recognised as key consequences. However, some peripheral regions are also experiencing repopulation, evidently driven by lifestyle-led mobilities. To date, this trend has largely been examined from a demand perspective, focusing on macro-level factors such as improved economic opportunities, attractive landscapes and appealing sociocultural or leisure environments. Nevertheless, theoretical discourse remains limited on why certain rural-peripheral regions are (un)able to repopulate, beyond (macro)economic factors and demand issues. Drawing on a micro-level analysis of vacant mountain farmhouses, we unpack supply-side barriers to rural repopulation. Analysis is based on interviews conducted with vacancy owners in the Alpine municipality of Innervillgraten (Tyrol, Austria). Findings reveal strong attachment to land and buildings ingrained over generations, financial security and delayed inner-familial or denied extra-familial transfers as key barriers to housing revitalisation. These micro-level factors consequently impede municipal repopulation through in-migration. We further identify the entanglement of micro- and meso-level factors that secondly promote municipal vacancy: owners' reluctance to mobilise their property is supported by policies—the restriction of second homes and pro-local land transfer laws—and vice versa. As we conclude, it is not the lack of demand for vacant housing but rather the entrenched place-based attachment to land on the supply side that may hinder the impetus for rural repopulation beyond our specific case. We also suggest greater sensitivity in choosing the study level and perspective to gain a more holistic understanding of the (im)possibilities of repopulating rural areas.",

"abstractNote": "Low emission zones (LEZ) have been widely adopted in Europe, evolving through iterative refinements to enforce stricter access criteria and align with sustainable urban transport objectives. A substantial body of literature examines the efficacy of LEZs, encompassing the environmental and social effects of LEZs, while little attention has been paid to evaluating their overall efficiency from a quantitative, multi-criteria perspective. This study introduces Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) to assess the performance of 12 European cities with diverse socio-economic and transport characteristics. The analysis incorporates three inputs (GDP/capita, LEZ ratio, and access strictness) and three outputs (two pollutants and the compliance rate) to capture the comprehensive efficiency of LEZs. All analyses were conducted by DEAP software, adopting an output-oriented approach. The results highlight the effectiveness and practicality of DEA in evaluating LEZ efficiency. Furthermore, Munich, Milan, Stockholm, and Brussels are found to be below the efficiency frontier, for which targeted improvement recommendations are proposed The main limitations of this paper are data availability and time inconsistency, which were mitigated through logical imputation and interpolation to estimate the missing data.",

"abstractNote": "This paper argues for the importance of centring mothers in the design and conceptualisation of ‘care-full’ and compassionate cities and communities. Focusing primarily on the experiences of pregnancy and early motherhood - particularly in relation to babies and toddlers - it reviews and unites literature on motherhood on the move and ‘caringscapes’, including caring and care-full cities and compassionate communities. While existing literature on compassionate communities has largely focused on the frail, elderly, and those with disabilities or life-limiting conditions, this paper highlights the need to also address the specific needs of mothers. It emphasises maternal physical, emotional, and mental health as key considerations in designing care-full urban environments. The paper advocates for mobility designs that prioritise mothers - whether they are travelling with or without their young children - within the framework of care-full cities and compassionate communities, aiming to create more mother-friendly cities that possess distinct qualities beyond those of child-friendly cities.",

"abstractNote": "The concept of “sustainable consumption corridors” bridges two topics critical to assessing energy and transport systems: human wellbeing and planetary boundaries. However, large disagreements remain regarding how to define minimum, essential and decent levels of demand, which form the floor of such corridors. Aggregate approaches based upon distance travelled (e.g. passenger-kilometres) are insufficient, as they omit why people move. To address this gap, we build upon established theories of fundamental human needs and needs-oriented mobility research to define “decent mobility” as the condition when an individual can enact a set of trips that allow satisfaction of their needs, within their resources and capabilities. We explain how this definition unifies (i) individual capabilities and resources (time, money), (ii) available physical infrastructure and services, and (iii) socio-political contexts that shape personal freedom. We then operationalise and quantify decent mobility with a “persona” approach. We model two case studies with very distinct mobility systems – Switzerland and Mauritius – to illustrate the flexibility of the framework. They show which methods and data sources are required to consistently assess decent mobility of individuals, as well as travel time, distance, energy use, and emissions. Overall, the framework offers a method for evaluating present and future transport systems by putting human needs and their heterogeneity at the centre.",

"abstractNote": "In India and Bangladesh cities, footpaths play a crucial role in enhancing the mobility of older adults. To age in place, the design and maintenance of footpaths become pivotal for older men to access services, opportunities and goods in neighbourhoods and beyond. The paper combines interviews, observations, visual surveys and GIS methods to present the varied walking experiences of older men in Bengaluru and Dhaka. We take an intersectional perspective to examine how multiple socio-economic inequalities intersect and get amplified by infrastructural inequalities to disadvantage older men. Our findings highlight that walkability is compromised as older men go about fulfilling their expected roles and responsibilities. The risk of falls, crowded spaces, poor pedestrian infrastructure and ageist remarks limit older men from accessing public spaces. Recognising the needs, barriers (physical, socio-economic and infrastructural) and coping mechanisms is imperative to creating age-friendly cities that prioritise the health, social participation and independence of older men.",

"abstractNote": "As human geography debates about infrastructures grow in sophistication, there is a need to deepen the discussion of how we study them. This paper responds by presenting a project focused on how road users evaluate different ways of dealing with the same shared infrastructure. With reference to work on everyday critical reasoning, it works through the challenges of doing an ‘ethnography of infrastructure’ and offers a framework for further research on what we call the ‘infrastructural settlement’ involved. The project began by accompanying regular cyclists on some of their rides in Carlisle, UK, so as to identify situations when the right response to the infrastructure was ambiguous. Videos of these situations were then discussed with three types of road user in the same city. Attending to the commonsensical reasonings they reached for in these interviews, we argue, allowed the project to surpass an implied vision of those who travel on the road in specific ways as either having their own unique experiences or being more likely to compete than cooperate with one another. The result is a new picture of how road sharing is collaboratively achieved and an argument about putting effective research design at the heart of the current conversation about infrastructure.",

"abstractNote": "Research on cycling conditions focuses on cities, because cycling is commonly considered an urban phenomenon. People outside of cities should, however, also have access to the benefits of active mobility. To bridge the gap between urban and rural cycling research, we analyze the bicycle network of Denmark, covering around 43,000 km\\ ^2 \\ and nearly 6 million inhabitants. We divide the network into four levels of traffic stress and quantify the spatial patterns of bikeability based on network density, fragmentation, and reach. We find that the country has a high share of low-stress infrastructure, but with a very uneven distribution. The widespread fragmentation of low-stress infrastructure results in low mobility for cyclists who do not tolerate high traffic stress. Finally, we partition the network into bikeability clusters and conclude that both high and low bikeability are strongly spatially clustered. Our research confirms that in Denmark, bikeability tends to be high in urban areas. The latent potential for cycling in rural areas is mostly unmet, although some rural areas benefit from previous infrastructure investments. To mitigate the lack of low-stress cycling infrastructure outside urban centers, we suggest prioritizing investments in urban–rural cycling connections and encourage further research in improving rural cycling conditions.",

"abstractNote": "Disability is often overlooked in discussions of green exercise. Consequently, we still know little about how ableist ideologies might play out in the context of nature engagement, or the forms of pleasure that disabled people derive from participation in green spaces. In this paper, we address this gap in the literature by exploring the relationship between electric mountain biking and disability in England (UK). Adopting the work of Bernard Stiegler, we highlight the superficiality of existing ideologies of nature, analyse the myriad ways that e-mountain bikes can challenge ableist attitudes towards outdoor recreation, and explore the freedoms and constraints that accompany the assemblages between e-mountain bikes and ‘disabled’ bodies. Drawing on data from 20 online interviews, we highlight the social contexts and interactions that shape technological choices, adaptations, and outcomes within the disabled e-mountain bike community. Our analysis reveals that, while e-mountain bikes are stigmatised in green spaces, the enhanced level of social interaction that is afforded by the presence of such technology allows participants to de-emphasise their perceived physical inadequacy and, instead, focus on promoting a more empowering image of the socio-technical disabled body that is active, capable and self-determined.",

"abstractNote": "Aeromobilities—socio-technical systems that lock in dependence on fossil fuel-based mobilities—contribute substantially to climate change and uneven geographies. They represent paradigmatic capitalism-driven forms of metabolism, permeated by logics of efficiency and growth. While existing literature has examined resistance to airport expansion, it has overlooked opposition to the metabolic dimensions of aeromobility. Using an urban political ecology (UPE) lens, this paper explores resistance to aeromobility through the case of the Stay Grounded movement against the expansion of Barcelona airport. We analyse airport resistance as a critique of capitalism-driven metabolization of nature, emphasizing the interplay of material flows, territorial subjectivities and degrowth-inspired imaginaries in opposing aeromobilities and constructing alternative visions. Using semi-structured interviews and a review of activist materials, we illustrate how the Stay Grounded movement forged discoursive and strategic alliances that reterritorialized opposition to airport expansion by integrating critiques of carbon emissions with broader struggles over livelihoods and ecological preservation. We highlight how degrowth principles, combined with territorial and metabolic analyses, enabled resistance to transcend localized NIMBYism and articulate transformative visions of mobility and urban-nature relations. This article contributes to UPE scholarship by providing a critical example of infrastructure politics in the context of climate emergencies and degrowth debates.",

"abstractNote": "To promote cycling through effective measures, a thorough understanding of cycling behaviour is essential. Researchers and practitioners assume that cycling behaviour, including riding behaviour and route choice, varies across cities. However, there is limited knowledge about these variations, their similarities, and the underlying causes. This article presents the results of a comprehensive analysis comparing riding behaviour and route choice preferences across six German cities. The analysis is based on a large GPS dataset comprising over 200,000 trips. The study reveals notable differences in riding behaviour and route choices between the cities, alongside several shared patterns. These differences may be influenced by urban characteristics such as city size and topography, while the similarities could be attributed to general preferences, attitudes, and adaptive behaviours. The findings provide valuable insights into cyclists' behaviour, enabling cities and municipalities to prioritize cycling promotion more effectively. In some cases, they may also support the implementation and adoption of more generalized strategies. Additionally, the study contributes to the development of city-specific models for predicting cycling demand, optimizing infrastructure, and ensuring the efficient resource allocation for improved network planning.",

"abstractNote": "The practice of telework has undergone a transformative shift, fundamentally reshaping work and lifestyle choices. Switzerland, like many other regions, experienced a remarkable acceleration of this shift, with the COVID-19 pandemic propelling telework from 25% of the workforce before the outbreak to 37.1% by the year 2022 (FSO, 2023). This surge in telework adoption has potentially enabled a re-evaluation of how people engage with their professional lives, offering new possibilities for individuals with diverse lifestyles and life course situations. This article explores the implications of telework on daily and residential mobility, focusing on the Swiss context. Our research addresses two key questions: Firstly, how does telework influence commuting patterns, and what are the resulting rebound effects on daily mobility. Secondly, what transformations occur in residential situations because of telework, and how do they influence mobility or immobility, and the choice of residence locations. To answer these questions, we analyze an ad hoc survey (n = 5′100). We will be discussing teleworking practices, socio-demographic factors, mobilities, and residential situations. Our central result is that telework reduces commuting frequencies while facilitating residential immobility but creating longer distances between workplaces and residences.",

"abstractNote": "Inspired by Gunnar Olsson, this article critiques the use of cartographic reason in the process of creating an accessible city for people with disabilities. It also borrows Gregory's ontological conceptual pair of cartography and corpography, showing the ontological transformations that occur within this pair during the practical removal of barriers to mobility in Brno, Czech Republic. The methodology employed involves semi-structured interviews with members of the city's Advisory Board for Accessibility. Our primary aim is to demonstrate how the imperative to eliminate specific barriers in the urban environment responds to the dominance of cartographic reason in planning and political decision-making. Findings indicate that this dominance often obscures the fact that what may appear as safely accessible in cartographic representations can manifest as inaccessible and hazardous corpography. However, the cartographic visualizations serve as the initial driving force behind bringing about potential improvements in corpographic accessibility. Urban space is mapped into myriad legal and political areas, which complicates accessibility. The cartography of accessibility is becoming utopian, and, through a critique of utopia, we show how a corpographic emphasis on multisensory experience can make the city more effectively accessible. We introduce the concept of a ferryman, one who facilitates navigation through urban space.",

Based on a representative survey in Switzerland, this paper shows the effect of political values on the frequency and reasons for cycling. All things being equal, Green voters cycle the most, especially for transport. Center and left-wing voters also cycle more than average. Right-wing voters are the least likely to cycle. However, the proportion of cyclists among their supporters is not negligible, which may indicate a dissonance with these parties' position on cycling as a mode of transport.",

"abstractNote": "This paper presents the results of a demand forecasting study about the introduction of Urban Air Mobility (UAM) services in the metropolitan area of Milan (Italy). Demand forecasting is based on random utility mode choice models, which include factors related to the individuals’ perception of vertical take-off/landing and low altitude flying over urbanized areas. The use cases of UAM services include airport shuttles, intercity air connections, and “air-taxis”, i.e., UAM services for short-trips within the metropolitan area. Several scenarios have been considered based on the number of access points (“vertiports”) and UAM fare levels. The results indicate that airport shuttles have a modal share of trips to/from airports (for both business and leisure) in a range of 2-5%. They resulted to be more attractive than air-taxis, which have a modal share in a range of 1-3%. Furthermore, the probability of choosing UAM services for intercity travels decreases with the distance and the time required for access/egress to/from the vertiports, whose catchment areas are dependent on the level of service provided by competing modes (notably the presence of good railway and highway connections).",
