"abstractNote": "Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork in Montreal, this article examines the ways in which urban dwellers and activists engage with the living materialities of wastelands to illuminate evolving ecological imaginaries and their political potentials. I focus on a seemingly marginal topic—urban weeds—to explore how human–weed relations can help us situate contemporary environmental concerns within longer histories of spatial violence, ecological degradation and settler power relations. Shifting perceptions of invasive and native weeds unsettle normative frameworks of urban biodiversity and reveal how polluted ecologies can be reinterpreted as sites of value and resistance. Here, I use wasteland activism to define grassroots efforts to protect unconventional, often stigmatized forms of urban nature from erasure within ongoing processes of urban redevelopment. Wasteland activism not only challenges official green transition narratives but also produces alternative visions of ‘worthy environments’ that expose the inherent contradictions of top-down narratives of repair and growth. In contexts where industrialism, far from belonging to the past, is very much an ongoing project, political weeds embody the disjuncture between institutional promises of green development and the slow work of building living presents amid enduring contamination.",

"abstractNote": "Within a context of pronounced attention towards urban greening, the inclusion of food-producing trees (FPT) in the public realm remains a marginal practice. In this paper, we consider why this may be the case. Building on recent scholarship investigating more-than-human care infrastructure (Alam & Houston, 2020; Power & Williams, 2020; Power & Mee, 2020), we consider the socio-material relations that enable (and limit) care of, and by, FPT in the urban context. To do so, we draw on document analysis and interviews with council staff in metropolitan Melbourne to unpack how FPT come to be understood as offering and deserving of care (or not), and how such characterisations impact if, and how, FPT come to be ‘welcome’ in urban public places. Our analysis, first, highlights dominant ways in which urban trees are understood through local government strategy and policy, and how an orientation towards (care-through) canopy works to exclude FPT. Second, we explore competing valuations of FPT and their capacity to contribute to sustainable cities. Across these accounts, FPT care and belonging remains ambiguous and contested. Third, we examine actual and imagined relations of FPT care and belonging, and how these work with but also remain limited by, dominant strategic directions and norms. Based on this analysis, we find that while an openness to FPT in council documentation is a significant step in enabling FPT inclusions, it is also necessary to recognise and value extant and/or potential care relations among people and FPT.",

"abstractNote": "Urban temperatures are rising, and urban trees can help mitigate the consequences of heat stress. However, the influence of water availability on the evaporative cooling efficiency of trees across diverse urban settings remains insufficiently understood. We modelled how varying soil moisture, built environment and tree amounts affect human thermal comfort. Our results show that increasing tree cover and maintaining high soil moisture through irrigation can generate areas of ‘no thermal stress’ in Zurich during an average summer day, primarily via direct soil evaporation and in less dense Local Climate Zones. In denser built environments and without enough soil moisture, achieving such thermal comfort proved more challenging. On extreme summer days, however, even extensive tree planting and full irrigation were insufficient to alleviate heat stress, indicating the need for additional adaptation strategies. Our study underscores the critical but limited role of tree planting and water management in mitigating urban heat, offering practical recommendations for green infrastructure managers.",

"abstractNote": "This study explores whether urban greening through tree planting is an economically viable climate change adaptation measure in Northern Europe’s climate. The analysis was conducted by modelling how increased tree canopy cover affects the urban heat island (UHI) effect and, in turn, reduces heatwave-related mortality among vulnerable populations. Using modelling data from 2022 to 2100 for three Finnish cities—Helsinki, Turku, and Oulu—the results suggest that, in some cases, tree planting can be an economically viable adaptation measure to reduce heat-related deaths. This requires that greening is applied in the most densely populated areas of the city. Among the three cities, greening proves most economically viable in Helsinki, which has the highest population density of the three study cities. Conversely, it is not an economically viable adaptation option in Oulu, the study’s northernmost and least densely populated city. The effectiveness of greening in economic terms varies depending on the city, the specific climate change scenario, and the intensity of the greening effort. As a result, the net present value (NPV) of tree planting may be either positive or negative. Therefore, any greening initiative should be carefully evaluated within its local context.",

"abstractNote": "Rewilding has become established as a new mode of nature conservation. There is a growing body of science, ambitious landscape-scale plans, and increasing political will. But until recently, cities and the urban were neglected; the idea of urban rewilding seen as oxymoronic. Of late, however, there has been a shift, with growing enthusiasm amongst metropolitan authorities, civil society, and citizens in major cities like London, New York, Toronto, and Melbourne, as well as smaller cities around the world. Noting a dearth of research on urban rewilding, this paper proffers an agenda for future geographical research into this emerging mode of urban nature conservation. The paper deploys the spatial-optical metaphor of diffraction, which originates in feminist science studies, to explore how rewilding as a socioecological practice developed in rural areas is changed when it encounters the urban, drawing on recent work in urban theory to trace how the urban might inform a new model of rewilding better equipped for the novel ecosystems and political configurations of the increasingly urban Anthropocene. It begins by defining how the sociomaterial urban fabric diffracts rewilding's practices and principles. It then examines how the distinct political economy of cities shapes the power dynamics of urban rewilding. The aesthetic dimensions of urban rewilding are then highlighted as important factors shaping how this emerging mode of urban nature recovery unfolds. In conclusion, we note how the nascency of urban rewilding presents opportunities for geographers to prefigure a progressive mode of Anthropocene conservation, and we advocate an affirmative style of critique that allies with practitioners and policy-makers. We establish future priorities for research into urban rewilding, including exploring minoritarian cultures of nature, comparative analysis of diverse cases, and examination of rural–urban linkages.",

"abstractNote": "International and national policies are being used to prioritise increases in urban forest coverage and diversity, support equitable access to urban greenspaces, and advance sound environmental governance outcomes. Yet, the relationship between people’s feelings about urban trees and public policy remains under-examined. Drawing on a unique dataset from an email-a-tree initiative, the objectives of this study were to identify how concern and connection for urban trees is expressed and determine how insights from the initiative might inform urban forest governance. We examined emails sent to trees using a mixed-methods approach that included qualitative coding, VADER sentiment analysis, and statistical and spatial analyses. We identified and considered three themes based on emails sent by members of the public and municipal tree inventory data. Those themes were location, age and loss, and type. In accord with other studies, overall sentiment for urban trees was positive and underscored people’s strong connections with trees, often based on routine and repeated engagements. However, people noticed and were concerned about a limited range of trees and tree types in urban settings. Based in Melbourne, Australia, our case study shows how examining feelings for trees helps residents and researchers understand urban tree relationships and gauge how those designing public engagement programs might learn from such an initiative to create meaningful opportunities for active participation in governance.",

"abstractNote": "Urban rivers play a pivotal role in fostering human–nature interaction in cities. This study investigates the evolving relationship between humans and rivers by examining public perceptions of rivers' multifaceted roles—an aspect not yet explored through social science methods—within the context of China's river restoration trends. We conducted a public survey in three riverine cities in China—Chongqing, Wuhan and Hangzhou, and generated 114 photographs of respondents' ‘favourite river sites’, as well as detailed written explanations of why they liked those places. By combining visual content analysis and textual thematic analysis to their answers, we identified five specific perceived values of urban rivers: ecological, recreational, scenic, economic and sentimental. The findings reveal a widespread preference for the ecological and recreational benefits of urban rivers, particularly through direct, sensory interactions with water. Urban rivers are also found to evoke enduring emotional bonds with people—for example, being referred to as the ‘mother river’—which is deeply rooted in Chinese culture. Water quality emerges as the most valued attribute, reflecting an urgent need to address the widespread pollution of rivers in Chinese cities. Biodiversity, however, remains underrepresented in public perception. People overwhelmingly prioritise water quality, often lacking awareness of the biological quality of rivers. The study also highlights potential conflicts between the high demand for recreational use of rivers and the need to conserve their ecosystems, suggesting future strategic mitigation plans to address this challenge. Rivers' cooling effects and mental health benefits can further contribute to the city's climate adaptation efforts. Given the substantial investments in river restoration in China, the study emphasises integrating social needs and involving public participation in urban river management. Ultimately, the results contribute to China's sustainable transformation by aligning ecological restoration with cultural and societal goals, and promoting coexistence between humans and nature within urban river corridors.",

"abstractNote": "This paper examines the possibilities for nature in contemporary times through a ground-up investigation of nature practices in Chennai, India. It navigates dissonant strands of scholarship on the promise of urban regions as sites of exemplary social natures with an analytical framework that examines how autonomous nonhuman life in Chennai is variously enabled and inhibited. By studying a breadth of natures and nature practices within this urban site (instead of focusing on a particular species or habitat), the paper illuminates the socio-material processes that undermine some natures even while supporting others, highlighting paradoxical responses to nonhuman agencies and resilience within the domain of ecological concern. The simultaneous analysis of Chennai's abundant and diminishing natures explains dissonances in urban natures scholarship, while offering fresh insights on more equitable approaches to nonhuman nature in human-dominated landscapes. Specifically, it points to the value of reconfiguring concepts and practices of nature, both within and beyond conservation, in ways that are attentive to the plural forms of nonhuman flourishing and experiential vulnerability. Any meaningful prospect for more-than-human futures in urbanising worlds, the paper argues, rests not on biopolitical conservation that seeks to reproduce the past or build future ecologies of ‘legitimate’ natures, but on desisting from the displacement of, and re-allowing room – conceptual, material and ethical – for already existing natures, whether scientifically valued or unintentional, whether imperilled or flourishing.",

"abstractNote": "This paper critically examines a £1.5 billion regeneration project that is currently unfolding in Thamesmead, a town in south-east London. Led by the housing association Peabody, the ongoing regeneration is attempting to transform the town into a new ecological refugium in the heart of London. One key focus underlying the regeneration revolves around the curation of a ‘wilder Thamesmead’, which is looking to incorporate new wild ecologies into the design of the urban landscape. Principally, this is manifesting in a network of rain gardens which are being transformed into new ecological infrastructures tasked with adapting and responding to the intensifying pressures of the climate crisis. These emergent gardens, however, are also being designed to perform an aesthetic mode of labour that Peabody refer to as ‘greening the grey’: an approach that is embracing a new, dishevelled ecological aesthetic across Thamesmead's historically grey and concrete urban landscape. These rain gardens are therefore merging the infrastructural with the aesthetic, straddling two key areas that the field of urban political ecology is yet to sustain engagement with: namely, expanded conceptions of agency as these relate to an ongoing ‘ecologisation’ of modern urban infrastructures, and the aesthetics of these emerging eco-modernist infrastructures as they are staged across the urban realm. The paper works through the tensions and contradictions underlying this attempt to curate an aesthetically wild and infrastructurally responsive urban landscape, focusing on how the horizons of a liberal-capitalist order are being refashioned under a new, duplicitous environmentalist guise. The paper concludes by arguing that the confluence between urban nature and landscape design needs to be further interrogated from a critically modified and ultimately interdisciplinary neo-Marxian lens.",

"abstractNote": "Several recent longitudinal studies have found that exposure to the natural environment is associated with lower non-accidental mortality. However, most of these studies used the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) as an exposure metric; and because NDVI might not be sensitive enough to adequately capture changes in urban vegetation, these studies might lack true longitudinal variation in exposure. Therefore, we used a natural experiment to assess the impact of 30 years of tree planting by the nonprofit Friends of Trees on non-accidental, cardiovascular, lower-respiratory, and accidental mortality in Portland, Oregon (mortality data were provided by the Oregon Health Authority). We estimated autoregressive mixed models of Census-tract level mortality rate (deaths per 100,000 population) associated with trees planted, including a tract-level random effect. All models used data from the American Community Survey to control for year, race, education, income, and age. Each tree planted in the preceding 15 years was associated with significant reductions in non-accidental (-0.21, 95 % CI: −0.30, −0.12) and cardiovascular mortality (-0.066, 95 % CI: −0.11, −0.027). Furthermore, the dose–response association between tree planting and non-accidental mortality increased in magnitude as trees aged and grew. Each tree planted in the preceding 1–5 years was associated with a reduction in mortality rate of −0.154 (95 % CI: −0.323, 0.0146), whereas each tree planted in the last 6–10 and 11–15 years was associated with a reduction in mortality rate of −0.262 (95 % CI: −0.413, −0.110) and −0.306 (95 % CI: −0.527, −0.0841) respectively. Using US EPA estimates of a value of a statistical life, we estimated that planting a tree in each of Portland’s 140 Census tracts would generate $14.2 million in annual benefits (95 % CI: $8.0 million to $20.4 million). In contrast, the annual cost of maintaining 140 trees would be $2,716–$13,720.",

"abstractNote": "Bangkok is a tropical metropolis subject to many human and nonhuman transformations. While Covid-19 raged, the city's mix of precarity and oppression gave rise to a youth protest movement that opposed the junta government and sought to intervene in Thai politics-as-usual. At the same time, a rewilding experiment aimed at undoing environmental damage quietly was unfolding in Benjakitti Urban Forest Park. We draw on science and technology studies (STS), anthropology and urban theory to elicit the events of both park and protests as ongoing experiments in rewilding Bangkok on more-than-human terrain. Both involve overlapping critical zones, where encounters between many beings and practices of worlding shape an uncommons and create problems of coexistence. Such problems call for cosmoecological diplomacy, understood as the art of giving collective shape to a more-than-human cosmos yet to arrive.",
