Yet, there is limited knowledge of how urbanisation in the Global South has been modelled. In this study, we examine how urbanisation has been modelled in cities in the Global South, highlighting progress made and identifying key emerging issues for future research. Based on a review of 149 articles, we find an increasing preference for hybrid models that combine simple modelling approaches with more complex deep learning approaches. However, the advantages of hybrid approaches over stand-alone models in terms of prediction power has not been strongly established in the literature. We also find that most of the applications do not directly account for the social processes that generate the urban expansion patterns we observe in the region. As a result, the validation of most models has been limited to the ‘where’ (locations) and ‘when’ (time) and not the ‘who’ (socio-economic characteristics of occupants of location at a given point in time). The application of the models is highly localised as most studies do not model more than one city. Landsat TM images from 2003 and 2013, along with an OLI image from 2023, are employed in supervised classification to detect temporal built-up area expansion of the Rangpur City Corporation (RpCC). Urban sprawl trends and patterns were evaluated and analysed using Shannon's Entropy Model (SEM), Landscape Metrics (LMs), and the Urban Expansion Intensity Index (UEII). Findings include an increase in the urban expansion rate of 16.5% in 2023. Consequently, RpCC's urban expansion trend from 2003 to 2023 is 16 times greater. Additionally, SEM and LMs confirmed that the RpCC expanded in a dispersed manner and the uncontrolled expansion in urban areas, respectively. The first step, therefore, is to establish a basis for comparing African cities. In this paper, we address the challenges of defining urban boundaries for cities across Africa's 54 countries. We outline our methodology and present the results of adapting the concept of Large Urban Regions (LURs) (Rozenblat, 2020), which encompass regional urbanized areas surrounding the main African cities. In total, we delineated 304 African Large Urban Regions, covering 5,522 Local Administrative Units (LAU). Use of simulation models (Cellular Automata and Agent-Based Models) followed in the late 1990s, with ontology and epistemology of complexity theory and modelling being defined a little less than two decades ago. We are, however, entering a new era where sensors regularly collect and update large amounts of spatio-temporal data. We define this ‘Big Data’ as geolocated data collected in sufficiently high volume (exceeding storage capacities of the largest personal hard drives currently available), that is updated at least daily, from a variety of sources in different formats, often without recourse to verification of its accuracy. We then identify the exponential growth in the use of complexity simulation models in the past two decades via an extensive literature review (broken down by application area), but also notice a recent slowdown. Further, a gap in the utilisation of Big Data by modellers to calibrate and validate their models is noted, which we attribute to data availability issues. Travel length has been characterized by negative power distributions. Controversy, however, exists over whether mobility patterns can be modeled in terms of a simple power law (Lévy flight model) or that more complicated power laws (exponential power law, truncated Pareto) are required. This study concentrates on two issues: testing the validity of exponential power laws and truncated Pareto distributions in urban systems to describe aggregate mobility patterns, and examining differences in mobility patterns for different travel purposes. The article describes the results of an analysis of Global Positioning System (GPS) taxi trajectory data, collected in Guangzhou, China, to identify mobility patterns in the city. The least squares statistic is used to estimate the parameters of the distribution functions. Results suggest that a fusion of functions, based on an exponential power law and a truncated Pareto distribution, represents the travel time distribution best. This article identifies contemporary issues faced in developing urban CA models and draws on this evidence to map out four interrelated thematic areas that require concerted attention by the wider CA urban modelling community. These are: (1) to build models that comprehensively capture the multi-dimensional processes of urban change, including urban regeneration, densification and gentrification, in-fill development, as well as urban shrinkage and vertical urban growth; (2) to establish models that incorporate individual human decision behaviours into the CA analytic framework; (3) to draw on emergent sources of ‘big data’ to calibrate and validate urban CA models and to capture the role of human actors and their impact on urban change dynamics; and (4) to strengthen theory-based CA models that comprehensively explain urban change mechanisms and dynamics. Pour mieux saisir la diversité des canaux de l’échange, nous prenons en compte simultanément plusieurs types de relations interurbaines, reflétant aussi bien des mobilités individuelles, des liens entre établissements économiques que des partenariats scientifiques, à l’aide de méthodes de sélection et de cumul des flux. Ces méthodes permettent en outre de distinguer plusieurs échelles d’interdépendance constitutives des dynamiques territoriales : d’une part, vingt-six systèmes urbains de proximité sont identifiés et des comparaisons entre ces systèmes sont établies à partir des formes d’organisation plus ou moins polarisées et de la nature des flux sur lesquels reposent ces systèmes. D’autre part, les liens transversaux entre pôles urbains régionaux sont analysés en prêtant attention à la portée et à la variété des interactions ainsi qu’au mode d’arrimage des systèmes de proximité à ces réseaux d’interconnexion. The right mix, the right people and skills, along with the ability to do something with them marks off the more powerful from the less powerful cities. In that respect, far reaching influence and control are the hallmarks of a powerful city. Often implicit in this view, however, is an understanding of power as something which a city possesses, a capacity for domination and control embedded in the city itself which gives it a ranking above others. This paper sets out an alternative way of thinking about how power ‘works’ for cities that is not based upon hierarchical domination or a zero sum game. The first part outlines a view of power as a means to an end, a medium that enables cities to hold networks together and bridge connections. Following that, the ‘power to’ run the networks, to exercise power with rather than over others, is illustrated through the example of the international division of labour that holds between the London and Frankfurt financial centres. In particular, the key role of intermediate elites as brokers is highlighted. This analysis is developed further in the final section by taking the example of Sydney as a powerful ‘switching point’, but one where intermediaries broker and bridge global networks to gain advantage — not through practices of domination and control, but more subtle modes of power such as manipulation and inducement, which operate at the expense of others. This paper uses the methodological and conceptual insights of network analysis to argue for an approach to regionalisation that treats them neither as perfectly enclosed nor perfectly borderless. By comparing the many contested readings of ‘community’ in geography and the social sciences to the operational definition of a ‘community’ in graph theory, I extend historic questions about the spatial definition of human communities and describe how network analysis can offer insight about the texture of human geography. A case study, using network data about commuting in the New England region of the US, shows how these algorithmically-detected regions are both stable and fluid at once. We operationalise the three-systems model that analyses functional settlement geographies through the interaction between the daily urban system, the central place system and the export base system. We utilise theoretically-informed selections of spatial interactions derived from travel survey data at the finely-grained postcode level. After examining the methodological challenge of the node-inclusivity dilemma, we estimate the causal mechanisms that geographically structure each system and determine which spatial interactions should be assigned to nodes (containment) and edges (connectivity). The three systems produce different regionalisations that are neither mutually exclusive nor perfectly nested. Further analysis of the multiplexity of the three systems reveals the importance of the imbricated boundaries between the urban subsystems. Combining these statistical techniques with qualitative data from our broader study, we explore student flows between different geographical areas in the UK for universities. The clusters or ‘communities’ of areas underline how student migration to attend university in the UK is a moment which reflects and re-creates regional and national boundaries. The second part of the paper examines school to university student flows, highlighting a distinctive, predominantly English cluster of elite schools and universities. The only way we can explore such an uncertain future is to build hypothetical cities on which we are able to experiment with different urban futures. Here we build a hypothetical, symmetric, monocentric city which we proceed to lockdown by moving 80 percent of its workers to work from home. We then illustrate how we can relax this situation, letting the city return to a new equilibrium and showing how changes in our travel behaviour can lead to very different forms of future city. Adopting a spatial approach to this issue, we identify the spatial factors that help explain why some areas are hit harder than others, based on the Italian example (with the Lombardy region as the epicentre in Europe). Our analysis combines an autoregressive spatial model and a bivariate spatial autocorrelation from a pool of data collected from the Italian provinces to propose a real-time analysis of the spread and concentration of the virus.
