            "abstractNote": "Multilingualism is common offline, but we have a more limited understanding of the ways\nmultilingualism is displayed online and the roles that multilinguals play in the spread of content\nbetween speakers of different languages. We take a computational approach to studying\nmultilingualism using one of the largest user-generated content platforms, Wikipedia.\nWe study multilingualism by collecting and analyzing a large dataset of the content written\nby multilingual editors of the English, German, and Spanish editions of Wikipedia. This dataset\ncontains over two million paragraphs edited by over 15,000 multilingual users from July\n8 to August 9, 2013. We analyze these multilingual editors in terms of their engagement,\ninterests, and language proficiency in their primary and non-primary (secondary) languages\nand find that the English edition of Wikipedia displays different dynamics from the Spanish\nand German editions. Users primarily editing the Spanish and German editions make more\ncomplex edits than users who edit these editions as a second language. In contrast, users\nediting the English edition as a second language make edits that are just as complex as the\nedits by users who primarily edit the English edition. In this way, English serves a special\nrole bringing together content written by multilinguals from many language editions. Nonetheless,\nlanguage remains a formidable hurdle to the spread of content: we find evidence\nfor a complexity barrier whereby editors are less likely to edit complex content in a second\nlanguage. In addition, we find that multilinguals are less engaged and show lower levels of\nlanguage proficiency in their second languages. We also examine the topical interests of\nmultilingual editors and find that there is no significant difference between primary and nonprimary\neditors in each language.",

By analyzing\na set of constitutive documents for the Wikipedian universe,\nincluding discussion about NPOV, the authors conclude that\nambiguity is at the heart of the policy process on Wikipedia. The\noverarching conclusion is that ambiguity onWikipedia is not extraneous,\nbut a central ingredient of this wiki project’s policymaking.\nAmbiguity naturally develops from the pluralist and nonhierarchic\nvalues of the culture that brought Wikipedia to life, and this\nconclusion requires that we reconsider the nature of “neutrality”\npracticed on Wikipedia.",

This article deals with difficulties in comparing them with each other and assessing their strength. Wikimedia Statistics can mislead if not interpreted with a knowledge about the ways Wikipedia editing works. Many language editions embellish the total number of articles by creating pseudo-articles with little or no encyclopedic value. The main question of the study presented by this article is what factors make a language edition grow, such as the existence of a standardized language, language status, Internet access for the average speaker, and the attitude of speakers to their language. "creators": [],
            "abstractNote": "Purpose\n– DBpedia extracts structured information from Wikipedia, interlinks it with other knowledge bases and freely publishes the results on the web using Linked Data and SPARQL. However, the DBpedia release process is heavyweight and releases are sometimes based on several months old data. DBpedia‐Live solves this problem by providing a live synchronization method based on the update stream of Wikipedia. This paper seeks to address these issues.\n\nDesign/methodology/approach\n– Wikipedia provides DBpedia with a continuous stream of updates, i.e. a stream of articles, which were recently updated. DBpedia‐Live processes that stream on the fly to obtain RDF data and stores the extracted data back to DBpedia. DBpedia‐Live publishes the newly added/deleted triples in files, in order to enable synchronization between the DBpedia endpoint and other DBpedia mirrors.\n\nFindings\n– During the realization of DBpedia‐Live the authors learned that it is crucial to process Wikipedia updates in a priority queue. Recently‐updated Wikipedia articles should have the highest priority, over mapping‐changes and unmodified pages. An overall finding is that there are plenty of opportunities arising from the emerging Web of Data for librarians.\n\nPractical implications\n– DBpedia had and has a great effect on the Web of Data and became a crystallization point for it. Many companies and researchers use DBpedia and its public services to improve their applications and research approaches. The DBpedia‐Live framework improves DBpedia further by timely synchronizing it with Wikipedia, which is relevant for many use cases requiring up‐to‐date information.",

            "abstractNote": "History is a deeply individualistic craft. The singly authored work is the standard for the\nprofession; only about 6 percent of the more than 32,000 scholarly works indexed since\n2000 in this journal's comprehensive bibliographic guide, \"Recent Scholarship,\" have\nmore than one author. Works with several authors—common in the sciences—are even\nharder to find. Fewer than 500 (less than 2 percent) have three or more authors.'\nHistorical scholarship is also characterized by possessive individualism. Good professional\npractice (and avoiding charges of plagiarism) requires us to attribute ideas and\nwords to specific historians—we are taught to speak of \"Richard Hofstadter's status anxiety\ninterpretation of Progressivism.\"^ And if we use more than a limited number of words\nfrom Hofstadter, we need to send a check to his estate. To mingle Hofstadter's prose with\nyour own and publish it would violate both copyright and professional norms.\nA historical work without owners and with multiple, anonymous authors is thus almost\nunimaginable in our professional culture. Yet, quite remarkably, that describes the\nonline encyclopedia known as Wikipedia, which contains 3 million articles (1 million of\nthem in English). History is probably tbe category encompassing the largest number of\narticles. Wikipedia is entirely free. And that freedom includes not just the ability of anyone\nto read it (a freedom denied by the scholarly journals in, say, JSTOR, which requires\nan expensive institutional subscription) but also—more remarkably—their freedom to\nuse it. You can take Wikipedia's entry on Franklin D. Roosevelt and put it on your own\nWeb site, you can band out copies to your students, and you can publisb it in a book—all\nwith only one restriction: You may not impose any more restrictions on subsequent readers\nand users than have been imposed on you. And it has no authors in any conventional\nsense. Tens of thousands of people—who have not gotten even the glory of affixing their\nnames to it—have written it collaboratively.",

            "abstractNote": "Abstract\nPurpose\n– The purpose of this paper is to examine academics’ awareness of and attitudes towards\nWikipedia and Open Access journals for academic publishing to better understand the perceived\nbenefits and challenges of these models.\nDesign/methodology/approach\n– Bases for analysis include comparison of the models, enumeration\nof their advantages and disadvantages, and investigation of Wikipedia’s web structure in terms of\npotential for academic publishing. A web survey was administered via department-based invitations\nand listservs.\nFindings\n– The survey results show that: Wikipedia has perceived advantages and challenges in\ncomparison to the Open Access model; the academic researchers’ increased familiarity is associated\nwith increased comfort with these models; and the academic researchers’ attitudes towards these\nmodels are associated with their familiarity, academic environment, and professional status.\nResearch limitations/implications\n– The major limitation of the study is sample size. The result\nof a power analysis with GPower shows that authors could only detect big effects in this study at\nstatistical power 0.95. The authors call for larger sample studies that look further into this topic.\nOriginality/value\n– This study contributes to the increasing interest in adjusting methods of\ncreating and disseminating academic knowledge by providing empirical evidence of the academics’\nexperiences and attitudes towards the Open Access and Wikipedia publishing models. This paper\nprovides a resource for researchers interested in scholarly communication and academic publishing,\nfor research librarians, and for the academic community in genera",

            "abstractNote": "This paper describes how to \nautomatically cross-reference \ndocuments with Wikipedia: the largest knowledge base ever known. It explains how machine learning can be used to identify significant terms within unstructured text, and enrich it with links to the appropriate Wikipedia articles. The resulting link detector \nand disambiguator performs very \nwell, with recall and precision \nof almost 75%. This performance is\nconstant whether the system is evaluated on Wikipedia articles or “real world” documents. \nThis work has implications far \nbeyond enriching documents with \nexplanatory links. It can provide structured knowledge about any \nunstructured fragment of text. Any task that is currently addressed \nwith bags of words—indexing, clustering, retrieval, and summarization to name a few—could use the techniques described here to draw on a vast network of concepts and semantics.",

            "abstractNote": "This essay is based on a study that explores the relationships among multilingualism, technological change and the generation of novelty. It discusses the development of a \ndominant paradigm in language governance within digital culture and goes on to introduce the notion of ‘generative multilingualism.’ Generative multilingualism, it is argued, regards it as insufficient to foster the inclusion of most or all languages on the Internet if no adequate regime of intersection amongst those languages is put in place. In order to be sustainable in digital culture, linguistic pluralism not only entails the participation of the world’s 6.000 languages, it requires their mutual interaction. The enormous task linguistic pluralism creates, therefore, is the generatively-enabl\ned interactivity of 36 million language pairs.",

            "title": "Teaching Wikipedia: The Pedagogy and Politics of an Open Access Writing Community",
            "creators": [],
            "abstractNote": "This dissertation is a study of Wikipedia’s collaborative, open access culture and \nthe opportunities for writing pedagogy it provides. Because the encyclopedia showcases \nproductive writing processes in radically transparent ways, Wikipedia enables rich \nopportunities for students to observe, practice, and learn about writing. Wikipedia can \nhelp students gain social and procedural writing knowledge as well as more traditional \nlearning outcomes related to research, writing and rhetoric. Engaging students in \nWikipedia’s interactive community can also lead to an increase in rhetorical knowledge \nas students practice negotiation and collaboration with authorities outside the \n“traditional” classroom. Additionally, the encyclopedia provides opportunities for \ncultural studies projects that involve students in the recognition of identity politics of \nrepresentation and cultural marginalization as they work to rectify missing articles and \ntopics that are underrepresented. Discussion of these opportunities provides a range of \npedagogical insights into how writing instructors can approach and teach with the \nencyclopedia, by asking students to join the Wikipedia community and—through their \nwriting—improve existing articles and create new ones. Such insights are supported by \nthree information-rich classroom case studies, made available through a qualitative \nresearch design that emphasizes student and instructor experience by re-creating \nclassroom contexts. In addition to asserting and describing the pedagogical benefits of \n 4 \nWikipedia writing assignments, these classroom studies interrogate the cultural politics of \naccess and representation that emerge when students and others try to join and write in \nthis community. Despite its ambitions for global representation and its open access \neditorial ethos, Wikipedia’s project is hindered by problems of homogenous editorship, \ntroubling issues of editorial access, and gaps in coverage of already marginalized topics. \nExamination of how these issues manifest in the encyclopedia and speculation on their \norigin further demonstrate how academics (especially in the humanities) can contribute to \nWikipedia. Involving students in projects to remediate problems of representation can \nimprove the encyclopedia while diversifying its editorial demographic. Coming to a \ndeeper understanding of the epistemological limits of the encyclopedic genre, a final goal \nof this dissertation, provides possible avenues for Wikipedia’s future development.",

            "abstractNote": "Authentication data was utilized to explore undergraduate usage of subscription electronic databases. These usage patterns were linked to the information literacy curriculum of the library. The data showed that out of the 26,208 enrolled undergraduate students, 42% of them accessed a scholarly database at least once in the course of the entire semester. Despite their higher levels of learning and expected sophistication in information seeking skills, juniors and seniors used databases proportionately less than freshmen and sophomores. The University Library conducts a variety of introductory seminars that introduce freshmen to databases in the Fall semester. There was no evidence that this momentum is sustained in the subsequent years when higher-level more sophisticated skills are needed.",
