            "abstractNote": "In this article I describe and compare a number of alternative generic strategies for the analysis of process data, looking at the consequences of these strategies for emerging theories. I evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of the strategies in terms of their capacity to generate theory that is accurate, parsimonious, general, and useful and suggest that method and theory are inextricably intertwined, that multiple strategies are often advisable, and that no analysis strategy will produce theory without an uncodifiable creative leap, however small. Finally, I argue that there is room in the organizational research literature for more openness within the academic community toward a variety of forms of coupling between theory and data.",

            "extra": "We extend the path creation literature by developing a dialectic perspective of its multi-layered nature. In particular, our perspective focuses on the process by which designers shift their attention across different layers of digital innovation in the pursuit of a particular innovation path. To better understand path creation in digital innovation, we draw on a six-year in-depth field study of designers at CarCorp and its owner, GlobalCarCorp. Because of the reciprocal nature of path creation and path dependency, the design agency of CarCorp's path creators is embroiled in tensions and contradictions. The reciprocity of dominant, emergent, and residual design structures serves as an underlying generative force for breaking away from the current innovation path of the studied automaker.",

            "abstractNote": "The development of an information system is a social process involving users and systems analysts, carried out in an organizational setting. This paper presents a process model of user-analyst relationships to guide research into the social dynamics of system development. The model identifies antecedent conditions, encounters, episodes, and outcomes over the course of a project. The model asserts that established relationships between analysts and users will persist unless critical encounters change the trajectory of the project. By conceiving of systems development as a series of encounters and episodes, researchers may identify critical encounters and study the connections between preceding events and their consequences. Practitioners may use the model to diagnose problems and to enact critical encounters that move a project in a different direction. The descriptive and predictive capacities of the process model are illustrated with two case studies.",

            "abstractNote": "This article concerns theories about why and how information technology affects organizational life. Good theory guides research, which, when applied, increases the likelihood that information technology will be employed with desirable consequences for users, organizations, and other interested parties. But what is a good theory? Theories are often evaluated in terms of their content--the specific concepts used and the human values served. This article examines theories in terms of their structures--theorists' assumptions about the nature and direction of causal influence. Three dimensions of causal structure are considered--causal agency, logical structure, and level of analysis. Causal agency refers to beliefs about the nature of causality: whether external forces cause change, whether people act purposefully to accomplish intended objectives, or whether changes emerge unpredictably from the interaction of people and events. Logical structure refers to the temporal aspect of theory--static versus dynamic--and to the logical relationships between the \"causes\" and the outcomes. Level of analysis refers to the entities about which the theory poses concepts and relationships--individuals, groups, organizations, and society. While there are many possible structures for good theory about the role of information technology in organizational change, only a few of these structures can be seen in current theorizing.             "abstractNote": "This paper describes the methods being used by the Minnesota Innovation Research Program to develop and test a process theory of innovation which explains how and why innovations develop over time and what developmental paths may lead to success and failure for different kinds of innovations. After a background description of the longitudinal field research, this paper focuses on the methods being used to examine processes of innovation development. These methods pertain to the selection of cases and concepts, observing change, coding and analyzing event data to identify process patterns, and developing theories to explain observed innovation processes. We believe these methods are applicable to other studies that examine a range of temporal processes, including organizational startup, growth, decline, and adaptation.",

            "abstractNote": "This paper makes three suggestions to researchers for studying strategy process. First, define the meaning of process. Process is often used in three ways in the literature: (1) a logic used to explain a causal relationship in a variance theory, (2) a category of concepts that refer to actions of individuals or organizations, and (3) a sequence of events that describe how things change over time. The second suggestion is to clarify the theory of process. An interdisciplinary literature review identifies four types of theories of process that can be drawn upon: life cycle, teleology, dialetics, and evolution. The third suggestion is to design research to observe strategy process in such a way that is consistent with one's definition and theory of process.",

            "abstractNote": "We trace the process of developing and implementing a materials management system in one company over a 15-year period. Using a process research model developed by Newman and Robey, we identify 44 events in the process and define them as either encounters or episodes. Encounters are concentrated events, such as meetings and announcements, that separate episodes, which are events of longer duration. By examining the sequence of events over the 15 years of the case, we identify a pattern of repeated failure, followed by success. Our discussion centers on the value of detecting and displaying such patterns and the need for theoretical interpretation of recurring sequences of events. Five alternative theoretical perspectives, originally proposed by Kling, are used to interpret the sequential patterns identified by the model. We conclude that the form of the process model allows researchers who operate from different perspectives to enrich their understanding of the process of system development.",

            "abstractNote": "Mechanisms for the successful adoption of process innovation were investigated. Since firms buy most new technologies for manufacturing operations, it is difficult for them to use these technologies to achieve competitive advantage because it is difficult to protect them from imitation and circumvention. We suggest that successful organizations use four integrating mechanisms of two types to capture the value from process innovations, (1) making process innovation a unique occasion for significant restructuring and (2) creating effective new patterns from the many alternative ways of accomplishing these changes. Findings supported the idea that three upstream integrating mechanisms directed at the value-added chain--new hierarchical structure, increased coordination between design and manufacturing, and greater supplier cooperation--positively affect the productivity of new manufacturing systems, and one market-directed, downstream mechanism, forming new customer alliances, positively affects new system flexibility. Guidelines for future research are discussed.",
