Results demonstrate the ease which high quality models can be obtained with minimal training and by using standard field cameras and computers. Different models of pit hearth and architectural features are presented to demonstrate the versatility of model output formats in terms of their accessibility to broad audiences and the variety of display options available. Comparison with more traditional field measurements indicates the suitability and superiority of this approach in terms of time investment and mapping detail and accuracy. Combined, these efforts demonstrate the potential of this technique to be incorporated into the standard practices of academic and professional field projects with minimal interruption.", The main purpose of this paper is to demonstrate a useful workflow concerning photogrammetric techniques, specific software and 3D printing for the application of non-invasive restoration treatments. The applied methodology was based on the application of photogrammetric digital 3D modeling to obtain virtual models of a Roman cornice from Castulo Archaeological Site (located in Spain), along with the subsequent use of those models for the material restoration of the losses, by making the 3D printing of the piece for the reintegration. The results demonstrate that the losses can be accurately and controllably filled in by direct reintegration, potentially in several 3D printing materials, and by using a mold, which could also be printed. The recent development of machine learning techniques has attracted a great attention in its potential to address complex tasks that traditionally require manual inputs. It is therefore worth revisiting the role and existing efforts of machine learning techniques in the field of photogrammetry, as well as its neighboring field computer vision. This paper provides an overview of the state-of-the-art efforts in machine learning in bringing the automated and ‘intelligent’ component to photogrammetry, computer vision and (to a lesser degree) to remote sensing. Of the technologies that contribute to the proliferation of 3D data, photogrammetry facilitates the rapid and inexpensive digitization of complex subjects in both field and lab settings. It finds additional use as a tool for public outreach, where it engages audiences ranging from source communities to artifact collectors. But what has photogrammetry’s function been in advancing archaeological analysis? Drawing on our previous work, we review recent applications to understand the role of photogrammetry for contemporary archaeologists. Although photogrammetry is widely used as a visual aid, its analytical potential remains underdeveloped. Considering various scales of inquiry—graduating from objects to landscapes—we address how the technology fits within and expands existing documentation and data visualization routines, while evaluating the opportunity it presents for addressing archaeological questions and problems in innovative ways. The 3D models of the ancient Egyptian coffins produced for the “Book of the Dead in 3D” project housed at the University of California, Berkeley, will be taken as a case-study to analyze and discuss those issues. Given the importance of annotations on 3D models of an inscribed artifact such as an ancient Egyptian coffin, this article will also discuss the materiality of the text and its digital reproduction, and how the metadata of a historical object and its text decoration need to be produced “responsibly” and according to museum eth-\nics, to ensure sustainability and access in the language of origin of the artifact.
