Simon tries to help a young Iraqi-Kurdish illegal immigrant, Bilal Kayani (Firat Ayverdi), whose dream is to cross the English Channel from Calais in France to the United Kingdom by any means possible to be reunited with his girlfriend Mina (Derya Ayverdi). Meanwhile, Mina's father strongly opposes Bilal's plans as he wants to marry his daughter to a cousin. After being caught with other illegal immigrants and returned to France, Simon gives him temporary refuge at his home after the young Bilal, nicknamed \"Bazda\" (runner, for his athletic abilities and love of football and Manchester United in particular) registers for swimming lessons, intending to train to be able to swim across the Channel.",

"abstractNote": "The film opens to a forest that is being cleared for development, and Arseniev searching for an unmarked grave. The film then flashes back to Arseniev's surveying expedition to the area of Shkotovo in Ussuri region in 1902. A topographic expedition troop, led by Captain Arseniev (Yuri Solomin), encounters a nomadic, aboriginal Nanai tribesman named Dersu Uzala (Maxim Munzuk) who agrees to guide them through the harsh frontier. Initially viewed as an uneducated, eccentric old man, Dersu earns the respect of the soldiers through his great intelligence, accurate instincts, keen powers of observation, and deep compassion. He repairs an abandoned hut and leaves provisions in a birch container so that a future traveler would survive in the wilderness. He deduces the identities and situations of people by analyzing tracks and articles left behind.\n\nDersu Uzala saves the lives of Captain Arseniev and one of his men not once, but twice. First, when a sudden blizzard overtakes Dersu and the Captain, Dersu shows Arseniev how to quickly build a straw hut for shelter using grass. The two men avoid freezing to death and are discovered by the rest of their comrades when the blizzard clears. Five years later in 1907, Dersu and Captain Arseniev again find each other in the wilderness. When Dersu and Arseniev fall into swift moving currents while crossing a river in a raft, Dersu forces Arseniev to swim while the raft is close to shore then directs the party to cut a tree which can reach him before he drowns.\n\nAt the end of the expedition, he leaves the soldiers by the railroad tracks and returns to wilderness, only to encounter Arseniev again, years later, on another surveying expedition. However, Dersu's eyesight and other senses begin to fade with age. Dersu is no longer able to hunt, and the Siberian tiger stalking the old man comes very close until Dersu shoots at the predator. Captain Arseniev decides to take Dersu with him to the city of Khabarovsk. Dersu quickly discovers that he is not permitted to chop wood or to build a hut and fireplace in the city park, nor is he allowed to shoot within the city limits. The constables often bring Dersu back to the house, and one day he asks to leave the city and return to living in the hills. As a parting gift, Arseniev gives him a new rifle.\n\nSome while later, Arseniev receives a telegram informing him that the body of a Goldi has been found, with no identification on him save Arseniev's calling card, and is requested to come identify the body. Arseniev finds that it is indeed Dersu. The officer who found Dersu speculates that someone may have killed Dersu to obtain the new rifle that Arseniev gave him.",

According to tradition, once a person reaches the age of 70 he or she must travel to a remote mountain to die of starvation, a practice known as ubasute. The story concerns Orin, who is 69 and of sound health, but notes that a neighbor had to drag his father to the mountain, so she resolves to avoid clinging to life beyond her term. She spends a year arranging all the affairs of her family and village: she severely punishes a family who are hoarding food, and helps her younger son lose his virginity.\n\nThe film has some harsh scenes that show how brutal the conditions could be for the villagers. Interspersed between episodes in the film are brief vignettes of nature – birds, snakes, and other animals hunting, watching, singing, copulating or giving birth.",

"abstractNote": "The plot is a day in the life of glamorous fashion photographer Thomas (Hemmings), inspired by life of real Swinging London photographer, David Bailey.[3] It begins after spending the night at a doss house where he has taken pictures for a book of art photos. He is late for a photo shoot with Veruschka at his studio, which in turn makes him late for a shoot with other models later in the morning. He grows bored and walks off, leaving the models and production staff in the lurch. As he leaves the studio, two teenage girls, aspiring models (Birkin and Hills), ask to speak with him, but Thomas drives off to look at an antiques shop. Wandering into Maryon Park, he takes photos of two lovers. The woman (Redgrave) is furious at being photographed. Thomas is startled when she stalks him back to his studio, asking for the film. This makes him want the film even more, so he hands her another roll instead. His many blowups (enlargements) of the black and white film have rough film grain but seem to show a body in the grass and a killer lurking in the trees with a gun. Thomas is frightened by a knock on the door, but it is the two girls again, with whom he has a romp in his studio and falls asleep. Awakening, he finds they hope he will photograph them but he tells the girls to leave, saying, \"Tomorrow! Come back tomorrow!\"\n\nAs evening falls, Thomas goes back to the park and finds a body, but he has not brought his camera and is scared off by a twig breaking, as if being stepped on. Thomas returns to his studio to find that all the negatives and prints are gone except for one very grainy blowup showing the body. At a drug-drenched party in a house on the Thames near central London, he finds both Veruschka (who had told him that she was in Paris) and his agent (Peter Bowles), whom he wants to bring to the park as a witness. However, Thomas cannot put across what he has photographed. Waking up in the house at sunrise, he goes back to the park alone, but the body is gone.\n\nBefuddled, he watches a mimed tennis match, is drawn into it, picks up the imaginary ball and throws it back to the two players. While he watches the mime, the sound of the ball being played is heard. As Thomas watches this alone on the lawn, his image fades away, leaving only the grass as the film ends.",

"abstractNote": "One summer day in 1798, a naked boy eleven or twelve years of age (Jean-Pierre Cargol) is found in a forest in the rural district of Aveyron in southern France. A woman sees him, then runs off screaming. She finds some hunters and tells them that she saw a wild boy. They hunt him down with a pack of dogs (a Beauceron, a German Shepherd, an Airedale Terrier and an English Springer Spaniel). The dogs, upon picking up the boy's scent, chase him up a tree. A branch breaks off, and the dogs attack him when he falls. He fights them off leaving them wounded, then continues to flee and hides in a hole. Unfortunately, the dogs find him, smoke him out of the hole, and grab him.\n\nLiving like a wild animal and unable to speak or understand language, the child has apparently grown up in solitude in the forest since an early age. He is brought to Paris and initially placed in a school for \"deaf-mutes\". Dr. Jean Marc Gaspard Itard (François Truffaut) observes the boy and believes that he is neither deaf nor, as some of his colleagues believe, an \"idiot\". Itard thinks the boy's behavior is a result of his deprived environment, and that he can be educated.\n\nItard takes custody of the boy, whom he eventually names Victor, and removes him to his house on the outskirts of Paris. There, under the patient tutelage of the doctor and his housekeeper (Françoise Seigner), Victor gradually becomes socialized and acquires the rudiments of language.\n\nThere is a narrow margin between the laws of civilization in rough Parisian life and the brutal laws of life in nature. Victor finds a sort of equilibrium in the windows that mark the transition between the closed interiors and the world outside. But he gains his ability to have social relations by losing his capacity to live as a savage.",

Scientists research time travel, hoping to send test subjects to different time periods \"to call past and future to the rescue of the present\". They have difficulty finding subjects who can mentally withstand the shock of time travel, but eventually settle upon the prisoner, whose key to the past is a vague but obsessive childhood memory of a woman (Hélène Chatelain) during an incident where a man was killed on the boarding platform ('the jetty') at Orly Airport.\n\nAfter several attempts, he reaches the pre-war period. He meets the woman from his memory, and they develop a romantic relationship. After his successful passages to the past, the experimenters attempt to send him into the far future. In a brief meeting with the technologically advanced people of the future, he is given a power unit sufficient to regenerate his own destroyed society.\n\nUpon his return, with his mission accomplished, he discerns that he is to be executed by his jailers. He is contacted by the people of the future, who offer to help him escape to their time permanently, but he asks instead to be returned to the pre-war time of his childhood, hoping to find the woman again. He is returned and does find her, on the jetty at the airport - however, an agent of his jailers has followed, and assassinates him. In his final moments, he realises that the death which he witnessed as a child, which has haunted him for his entire life, was none other than his own.",

Then late one night, she steals the contents of the company safe and disappears.\nMark and Marnie on their honeymoon cruise.\n\nMark Rutland (Connery), a widower who owns a large publishing company, is a customer of Strutt's. He learns about the theft from the victim, and remembers the woman. Later, Marnie applies for a job at his company, Mark is intrigued. He is robbed too, but unlike Strutt, Mark had developed an affection for Marnie and manages to track her down. Instead of handing her over to the police, he blackmails her into marrying him.\n\nAfter being hastily married, Mark and Marnie depart on a honeymoon cruise, he finds out about her frigidity. At first, he respects her wishes, but later seduces her. (In certain syndicated broadcastings of the film, the sex scene is censored, making the sexual encounter more ambiguous.) The next morning she attempts suicide by drowning herself in the ship's swimming pool, but Mark rescues her in time.\n\nUpon their return, Mark tries to discover the reason behind Marnie's behavior. In the end, Marnie and Mark learn that her mother, Bernice (Louise Latham), had been a prostitute. When Marnie was six years old, one of her mother's clients (a sailor played by Bruce Dern) had tried to calm her after she became frightened by a storm. The mother thought he was trying to molest her daughter and began attacking him. Seeing her mother struggling with the man, Marnie struck him with a fireplace poker, killing him. The bloodshed led to her distrust of men and fear of the color red. Once the origin of her fears is revealed, Marnie decides she wants to try to make her marriage work.",

"abstractNote": "Set in Limoges, the movie tells the story of \"good son\" Franck (Jalil Lespert), who returns to his hometown to do a trainee managerial internship in the Human Resources department of the factory where his anxious, taciturn father has worked for 23 years. At first Franck is lauded by both friends and family for breaking through the glass ceiling and becoming \"white-collar\". But very soon hidden envy and rivalries erupt. Franck forms a friendship with Alain, a young worker whom his father has mentored. This mentoring in the blue-collar workforce is contrasted with the cagier, trust-less mentoring Franck receives in the white-collar world from his own supervisor, Chambon.\n\nFranck discovers that his boss is going to use Franck's field study on the proposed 35-hour work week to justify downsizing - and that Franck's father is among those to be let go. This leads to a confrontation between the trainee and management, between the workers and the owners, and ultimately between son and father. In the emotional climax, Franck confronts his father and accuses him of imbuing him with a legacy of shame at being blue-collar.\n\nThe movie ends with Franck asking Alain (and presumably the viewer), \"What is your place? When are you leaving?\", placing clear social and political value on individual choice in the workplace.",

"abstractNote": "The protagonist, Gustav von Aschenbach, travels to Venice for health reasons. There, he becomes obsessed with the stunning beauty of an adolescent Polish boy named Tadzio who is staying with his family at the same Grand Hôtel des Bains on the Lido as Aschenbach.\n\nWhile the character Aschenbach in the novella is an author, Visconti changed his profession to that of a composer. \"Playing the role\" of Aschenbach's music in the film is the music of Gustav Mahler, in particular the moving Adagietto from his Fifth Symphony, which opens and closes the film, and sections from his Third Symphony. Apart from this change, the film is relatively faithful to the book, but with added scenes where Aschenbach and a musician friend debate the degraded aesthetics of his music; again, this has direct parallels in the life and works of Mahler, especially when Aschenbach is played an extract of his own work which, in reality, is Adagietto from the fourth movement from Mahler's Fifth Symphony.\n\nWhile Aschenbach attempts to find peace and quiet, the rest of the city is being gripped by a cholera epidemic, and the city authorities do not inform the holiday-makers of the problem for fear that they will all leave. As Aschenbach and the other guests make day-trips out into the city centre it eventually dawns on them that something is seriously wrong. Aschenbach decides to leave, but in a moment of impulse decides to stay. However, he himself is dying. Rejuvenated by the presence of Tadzio—though they never actually converse—he visits the barbers who, in his words, \"returns to you merely what has been lost\", dyeing his grey hair black and whitening his face and reddening his lips to try and make him look younger. As he leaves the barber's shop the barber exclaims: \"And now Sir is ready to fall in love as soon as he pleases\". Aschenbach still continues to gaze at Tadzio from afar, the latter more aware that he is being gazed at. In the climactic scene, Aschenbach sees Tadzio being beaten up on the beach by an older boy, and at that very moment—heightened by the crescendo in Mahler's Adagietto—he dies from the cholera infection. While Tadzio and the boy make up, they don't even notice Aschenbach dying, and they continue to walk along the beach while the other guests alert the hotel staff of what has happened. They then carry Aschenbach's body away.",

"abstractNote": "In April 1992, Christopher McCandless (Emile Hirsch) arrives in a remote area of Alaska and sets up camp in an abandoned bus. Initially, McCandless is exhilarated by the isolation, the beauty of nature around and the thrill of living off the land. He hunts wild animals with a .22 rifle, reads books, and keeps a diary of his thoughts as he prepares for himself a new life in the wild.\n\nTwo years earlier in 1990, McCandless graduates with high honors from Emory University. Shortly afterwards, McCandless rejects his materialist and conventional life by destroying all of his credit cards and identification documents. He donates nearly his entire savings of $24,000 to Oxfam and sets out on a cross-country drive in his well-used, but reliable Datsun to experience life in the wilderness. However, McCandless does not tell his wealthy, but unloving parents Walt (William Hurt) and Billie McCandless (Marcia Gay Harden) nor his sister Carine (Jena Malone) what he is doing or where he is going and refuses to communicate with them after his departure, leaving them to become increasingly anxious and eventually desperate.\n\nAt Lake Mead, Arizona, McCandless' automobile is caught in a flash flood causing him to abandon it and begin hitchhiking instead. He burns what remains of his dwindling cash supply and assumes a new name: \"Alexander Supertramp.\" In Northern California, McCandless encounters a hippie couple named Jan Burres (Catherine Keener) and Rainey (Brian H. Dierker). Rainey tells McCandless about his failing relationship with Jan, which McCandless helps the two rekindle. By September, McCandless decides to stop in Carthage, South Dakota to work for a contract harvesting company owned by Wayne Westerberg (Vince Vaughn), but he is forced to leave after Westerberg is arrested for satellite piracy.\n\nMcCandless then travels to the Colorado River and, though he is told by park rangers that he may not kayak down the river without a license, he ignores their warnings and paddles downriver until he eventually arrives in Mexico. There, his kayak is lost in a sandstorm and he crosses back into the United States on foot. Unable to easily hitchhike, he starts traveling via freight train to Los Angeles. Not long after arriving, however, he starts feeling \"corrupted\" by modern civilization and decides to leave. Later, McCandless is forced to switch his traveling method back to hitchhiking after he is beaten brutally by a railroad bull.\n\nIn December 1991, McCandless arrives at Slab City, and encounters Jan and Rainey again. There he meets Tracy Tatro (Kristen Stewart), a teenage girl who is attracted to McCandless. After the holidays, McCandless decides to continue heading for Alaska, much to everyone's sadness. While camping near Salton City, California, McCandless encounters Ron Franz (Hal Holbrook), a retired man who recounts the story of the loss of his family during his service in the United States Army. He now occupies his time in a workshop as an amateur leather worker. Franz teaches McCandless the art, resulting in the production of a belt summarizing McCandless' travels. After spending several months with Franz, McCandless decides to leave for Alaska despite Franz's upset, who has become quite close to McCandless. On parting note, Franz gives McCandless his old camping and travel gear along with the offer to adopt McCandless as his grandchild, but McCandless simply tells him that they should discuss this after McCandless returns from Alaska and then departs.\n\nMonths later at the abandoned bus, life for McCandless becomes harder and he becomes less discerning. As his supplies begin to run out, McCandless realizes that nature is also harsh and uncaring. In the pain of realization, McCandless concludes that true happiness can only be found when shared with others and seeks to return from the wild to his friends and family. However, he finds that the stream he had crossed during the winter has become wide, deep, and violent due to the thaw, and thus he is unable to cross. Saddened, McCandless returns to the bus, now as a prisoner who is no longer in control of his fate and can only hope for help from the outside. In a desperate act, McCandless is forced to gather and eat roots and plants, but he confuses similar plants and becomes violently ill as a result. Slowly dying, McCandless continues to document his process of self-realization and accepts his fate, as he imagines his family for one last time. He writes a farewell to the world and crawls into his sleeping bag to die. Two weeks later, his body is found by moose hunters. Shortly afterwards, Carine returns her brother's ashes by airplane from Alaska to the eastern seaboard in her backpack.",

"abstractNote": "In London, Alex DeLarge (Malcolm McDowell) is the leader of his \"droogs\", Pete (Michael Tarn), Georgie (James Marcus), and Dim (Warren Clarke), one of several youth gangs. One night, after intoxicating themselves on \"milk plus\", they engage in an evening of \"the old ultra-violence\", including beating an elderly vagrant (Paul Farrell) and fighting a rival gang led by Billyboy (Richard Connaught).[1] Stealing a car, they drive to the country home of Mr. Alexander (Patrick Magee), where they beat Mr. Alexander to the point of crippling him for life, and then Alex rapes his wife (Adrienne Corri) all while singing \"Singin' in the Rain\".\n\nThe next day, while truant from school, Alex is approached by probation officer Mr. P. R. Deltoid (Aubrey Morris), who is aware of Alex's violence and cautions him. After the event of the night before, his droogs express discontent with Alex's petty crimes, demanding more equality and more high-yield thefts, but Alex reasserts his leadership by attacking them and throwing them into a canal. That night, Alex invades the mansion of a wealthy woman (Miriam Karlin) while his droogs remain at the front door; Alex bludgeons the woman with a phallic statue, and when he hears the police sirens approaching the house, he tries to run away, but is attacked by his droogs, and Dim smashes a quart bottle of milk across his face, leaving him stunned and bleeding. Alex is captured by the police, and Deltoid informs him that the woman subsequently died in the hospital, making him a murderer. Alex is sentenced to 14 years incarceration.\n\nTwo years into the sentence, the Minister of the Interior (Anthony Sharp) arrives at the prison looking for volunteers for the Ludovico technique, an experimental aversion therapy for rehabilitating criminals within two weeks; Alex readily volunteers. The process involves drugging Alex while strapping him to a chair, forcing his eyelids to stay open, and subjecting him to watch violent movies. Alex, initially pleased by the violent images, starts to become repulsed due to the drugs; he soon realises that the films' soundtracks are by his favourite composer Ludwig Van Beethoven, and that the Ludovico technique will make him averse to that and tries to end the treatment to no avail.\n\nAfter two weeks of the Ludovico technique, the Minister of the Interior puts on a demonstration to prove that Alex is \"cured\", shown incapable of fighting back against an actor (John Clive) that insults and assaults him, and becoming violently ill at the sight of a topless woman (Virginia Wetherell). Though the prison chaplain (Godfrey Quigley), whom Alex has befriended during his incarceration, protests the results saying that \"there's no morality without choice\", the prison governor (Michael Gover) asserts they are not interested in the moral questions and only in the means to prevent violence.\n\nAlex is released, finding that his parents have sold his possessions and rented out his room. Homeless, Alex encounters the same elderly vagrant from before, who attacks him with several other friends. Alex is saved by two policemen but is shocked to discover they are his former droogs, Dim and Georgie. They drag Alex to the countryside, where they beat him and attempt to drown him. The dazed Alex wanders the countryside before coming to the home of Mr. Alexander, and collapses. Alex wakes up to find himself being treated by Mr. Alexander and his manservant, Julian (David Prowse). Mr. Alexander does not remember Alex from the earlier attack but has read about his treatment in the newspapers, and sees Alex as a political weapon to usurp the government, exposing the Ludovico treatment as a means to mind controlling society. As Mr. Alexander prepares to introduce Alex to fellow colleagues (John Savident and Margaret Tyzack), he hears Alex singing \"Singin' in the Rain\" in the bath, and the memories of the earlier assault return. With his colleagues' help, Mr. Alexander drugs Alex and places him in a locked upstairs bedroom, playing \"Beethoven's Ninth Symphony\" through the floor below. Alex, in excruciating pain, throws himself from the window. He is then knocked unconscious by the fall.\n\nAlex is taken to the hospital where he wakes from his injuries, having dreamt about doctors messing around inside his head. While being given a series of psychological tests, Alex finds that he no longer has an aversion to violence. The Minister of the Interior arrives and apologizes to Alex, letting him know that Mr. Alexander has been \"put away\", and offers Alex an important government job. As a sign of goodwill, the Minister brings in a stereo system playing \"Beethoven's Ninth Symphony\". Alex then realises that instead of an adverse reaction to the music, he sees an image of himself having sex with a woman in front of an approving crowd. He then states, in a sarcastic and menacing voice-over, \"I was cured, all right!\"",
