This systematic review of 104 studies reveals stark contrasts in theoretical approaches: Global North scholarship frames UA through lenses of racial capitalism and gentrification, while Global South perspectives emphasise rights-based access and survival strategies. A critical gap persists in applying resilience theory and everyday urbanism frameworks that could better capture UA's adaptive capacities in informal settlements. Empirical research remains disproportionately focused on caloric access and social significance (70% of studies), neglecting integrated analyses of economic, environmental, and health impacts (< 30%). Such fragmentation perpetuates narrow policy approaches that overlook UA's systemic potential. Key structural barriers such as land tenure insecurity, spatial constraints, and policy contradictions are particularly acute in African contexts, where informal UA practices thrive despite institutional marginalisation. Three priority research gaps emerge: (1) limited empirical understanding of extra-legal UA's productivity and governance; (2) insufficient assessment of sustainability trade-offs; and (3) inadequate inclusion of non-farming community perspectives in impact evaluations. Addressing these through interdisciplinary, place-based research could transform UA from an ad hoc coping mechanism into a cornerstone of equitable urban governance under the UN's Sustainable Development Goal 11 (SDG 11). Geographical research about water governance in China has largely focused on the state, market, and large-scale water infrastructure projects. There is still a limited pool of empirical evidence and theorising about how everyday infrastructures and practices shape uneven urban waterscapes in urban China. To address this gap, this paper mobilises the theoretical and empirical potential of everydayness as a lens to bridge urban political ecology (UPE) and social practice theory (SPT). Specifically, we interrogate urban water provision in Chinese cities and regions and draw on in-depth qualitative fieldwork in Changsha, China. We examine how centralised water provision crystallises and exacerbates uneven water distributions and insecurity challenges at the material, discursive, institutional, and practical levels. We explain how heterogeneous configurations of water infrastructures and practices fill the gaps of everyday water demand, but can amplify unequal allocations of water resources at the community and domestic levels. Finally, we explore how these water arrangements are closely intertwined with socio-spatial differences and co-produce dynamics of power and authority in urban waterscapes. This study investigates how technology adoption shapes China’s water governance at a local scale, focussing on the River Chief System (RCS) in a southern Chinese city. Our findings suggest that digital tools enhance accountability and further consolidate the top-down central-local relationship in China by promoting data-driven modes of governance but do not fundamentally alter underlying power relations or the broader governance structure. By examining how digitalisation interacts with the local operation of the RCS, this paper contributes to hydropolitical literature by shedding light on how small-scale technologies may recalibrate the dynamics of power and water. Its historical and institutional hybridity makes the region particularly well positioned to foster integrative geographical perspectives. The objective of this study was to evaluate the present, post-transitional state of the discipline in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE), to identify its future trajectory and to uncover the significant role of CEE geography in addressing global environmental, social and economic challenges. To facilitate this process, four significant geographical topics have been identified as potentially providing a conducive environment for the partial reintegration of geography. The aforementioned themes encompass a range of topics, including migrations, the green transition, anthropogenic climate change, global tipping points, wetland disturbance, peatland carbon sequestration and cryosphere degradation. Furthermore, we have sought to assess the perspective and significance of geographical unity in addressing global crises that impact human life on Earth. This analysis has enabled the identification of critical issues that necessitate integrated approaches. The necessity for enhanced collaboration between physical and human geography, as well as between nature studies and social and economic explorations, is emphasised. In this regard, it is acknowledged that a more inclusive approach is employed in the field of CEE geography, with contributions from other disciplines such as biology, ecology, physics, sociology and economics being welcomed. These disciplines address processes that span from local to global scales, as well as those that study long-term phenomena, such as history and archaeology. Scholarship emphasises plural ontologies and identity-based recognition, yet we argue that TUC Rio Manicoré is more productively read as a form of insurgent universality: a grassroots, women-led struggle articulating concretely universal claims through the defence of collective lifeways rather than abstract rights or fixed identities. Drawing on Karen Ng's interpretation of Frantz Fanon's concept of concrete universal humanity, we frame the TUC as an expression of existential freedom grounded in forest peoples' practices of common use. Ethnographic and historical analysis situates the TUC within longer trajectories of Amazonian resistance to capitalist expropriation, from early twentieth-century rebellion against Colonel Lindoso to contemporary mobilisations against logging, land grabbing and industrial extractivism. The TUC differs from state-managed conservation and agrarian reform units by foregrounding rights to traditionally occupied territory and collective self-governance for forest peoples, transcending the exclusions of identity-exclusive categories such as Indigenous and Quilombola lands. This insurgently universal model unites diverse forest peoples around shared practices of common use, affirming autonomy while resisting capitalist incursions and state fragmentation. The TUC Rio Manicoré demonstrates how grassroots struggles can reshape legal frameworks: following its recognition in 2022, 12 further TUCs are under consideration and in 2025; the federal government adopted the model to regularise traditionally occupied lands in undesignated forests of the Legal Amazon. Serious challenges remain: state institutions have failed to defend the TUC against illegal logging and land grabs. The TUC's institutionalisation of insurgent universality is of conceptual and practical relevance for defending collective rights in forest conservation globally. This article explores local epistemologies of pollution’s causes and effects in three films, which were researched and produced by local residents of Bar Elias, a small town in the Beqaa, which has rapidly urbanized as a consequence of mass forced migration to the area. We approach pollution in Bar Elias as a form of slow violence whose causes and effects become more available to understanding through local epistemologies. The films speak through visuals of dirt, waste and discolouration, as well as inter-generational and cross-community storytelling. We suggest that the filmmakers are thus able to reign in the complex and dissipating connections between polluters and pollutants that challenge slow violence by adopting a spatial lens on broad struggles impacting Syrian, Lebanese and Palestinian residents. This spatial lens foregrounds pollution as an outcome of Bar Elias’ location at the agrarian-urban frontier—a distinct political geography from which we analyze power relations that create pollution and expose communities to harm. The findings show that whilst Kurigram's ecological quality fluctuates between good and moderate states, Sirajganj has experienced a continuous decline, and Tangail shows marked ecological degradation, especially in urban areas. The study demonstrates that the integration of RSEI with spatial autocorrelation techniques, such as Moran's I and Local Indicator of Spatial Autocorrelation (LISA), effectively captures spatial clustering of ecological quality. The clustering patterns indicate that ecological degradation is unevenly distributed, influenced by both human activities and natural processes. This paper investigates the health effects of recurring floods on households in Greater Kumasi through a qualitative study involving 55 purposively selected household heads. The findings reveal substantial negative health consequences, including immediate and medium-term issues such as injuries, bodily pain, fatigue, skin infections, upper respiratory diseases, diarrhoea, typhoid fever, and fatalities from drowning. Additionally, the study highlights a high prevalence of long-term psychological distress among affected households. The findings highlight the under-researched nexus between flooding and health in SSA and underscore the need for more vigorous institutional enforcement of land-use regulations, public education and collaborative health interventions involving the Ministry of Health and other key stakeholders. Focusing on the initial processes of drone survey, GIS mapping and data-creation under the scheme, the paper argues that the creation of ‘high-resolution property’ is achieved not via the imposition of a new regime of perception. One coordinated through the speculative and ideological property-making practices of drone surveyors, GIS technicians, and local residents. This new regime of perception aims to extract individual ownership lurking within collectivity, subdivide collectivised lands, and cleanly link rural property to global asset markets and digital public infrastructures. This paper seeks to provincialise contemporary geographical scholarship on property technology, drawing from the diverse property systems and emerging technological apparatus of the Global South, and examines the lively and mediated sociotechnical practices required to convert hundreds of thousands of rural territories into high-resolution private titles and data-points. To age in place, the design and maintenance of footpaths become pivotal for older men to access services, opportunities and goods in neighbourhoods and beyond. The paper combines interviews, observations, visual surveys and GIS methods to present the varied walking experiences of older men in Bengaluru and Dhaka. We take an intersectional perspective to examine how multiple socio-economic inequalities intersect and get amplified by infrastructural inequalities to disadvantage older men. Our findings highlight that walkability is compromised as older men go about fulfilling their expected roles and responsibilities. The risk of falls, crowded spaces, poor pedestrian infrastructure and ageist remarks limit older men from accessing public spaces. Globally, e-waste poses significant problems and threats to the environment, society and health of the population. In Ghana, this problem is more acute due to rapid technological advancement, lack of infrastructure, free trade policies and lack of sufficient coping mechanisms to manage e-waste materials sustainably. While the government and other environmental organisations have instituted numerous policies, regulations and strategies, very little achievement has been attained in addressing these problems due to high levels of poverty, weak enforcement of regulations and pervasive corruption. Using the conventional data collection approach of qualitative, quantitative and extensive literature review, this paper explored the underlying causes of the expansion of e-waste trading in Ghana, the implications of these activities on the environment and well-being of the population and the pragmatic solutions to these menaces. This paper established a complex interplay between environmental degradation in the context of e-waste businesses in Ghana. Additional findings established that while e-waste activities posed significant environmental problems that require urgent action, they are also sources of livelihood for a significant portion of the population in the country. These contradictions impact directly several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-Being), SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) and SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production). In this article and through interviews with 112 households in three cities of the province of Barcelona, we explore how water poverty manifests in the daily practices and coping strategies of household members. Findings reveal how these households, while not giving up uses considered essential, engage in demanding water-saving measures (e.g. reduced shower times; short washing machine programs or limited flushing) to maintain basic hygiene standards, imposing sometimes very strict behaviours particularly on children and teenagers. These, often draconian, behavioural adaptations are hardly reflected in the water bills which creates emotions of frustration and despair among respondents. Access to subsidies is also pursued with the help of non-governmental organizations and local services but lack of information, bureaucratic barriers, or legal status may hamper this option. The study also underscores gendered burdens, with women managing water austerity, and reveals concerns about private water management and inadequate water tariffs. Results advocate for policies addressing affordability by expanding subsidy accessibility and integrating poor household preoccupations into water governance. In this article we chart the variegated ecosystem of private firms that work closely with public and non-profit entities to transform metabolic flows of sewage into vital and valuable bioinformation, thereby creating new multi-institutional spaces of public health governance. We draw on literature in urban political ecology and political economy to ask: what are the emerging political economic actors, practices, and relations of wastewater surveillance? And how are emergent multi-institutional public-private partnerships and contracts transforming public health governance? To answer these questions, we use mixed qualitative methods to trace the field across North America, the Middle East and South Asia. Drawing on interviews, document and report reviews, financial reporting and observation at conferences, we find that these emerging public-private partnerships present concerning transformations in health governance where profits displace public health needs, proprietary technologies blackbox public health decisions, and vulnerable populations are experimented on for prototyping technology. One instrumented Jesr (singular of Jessour) was located upstream and the other one downstream. During each dry season, when crops experience water stress, the downstream Jesr had a higher available water content than the upstream one; in the downstream Jesr the soil profile moisture remained above the wilting point, whereas in the upstream soil surface, moisture levels decreased to below the wilting point. High accumulation/low intensity rains (causing saturation/excess runoff) flooded both upstream and downstream Jessour from 50 mm of cumulative rainfall, whereas high intensity/low accumulation rains (causing infiltration/excess runoff) activated the downstream Jesr from an intensity of 15.2 mm/h, and a combination of moderate intensity and moderate accumulation rains activated both Jessour from an intensity of 8 mm/h and a cumulative rainfall of 33 mm. We propose to set 50 mm of cumulative rainfall and/or 6.4 mm/h of intensity as threshold values for the activation of the Jessour system in Zmerten. Pour analyser ces défis, une approche mixte a été utilisée, combinant un questionnaire adressé à la population et aux conducteurs de véhicules pour des données quantitatives, ainsi que des entretiens avec des responsables administratifs et municipaux pour des perspectives qualitatives. Cette recherche met en lumière les défis actuels de ce désengagement à Yaoundé, tout en examinant les réformes entreprises par l'État pour améliorer le secteur. Cette crise hydrique bouleverse l’accès de l’ensemble de la population au service de distribution de l’eau ; les coupures sur le réseau entrainent une non-potabilité provisoire de l’eau. Cette crise frappe encore plus durement la part importante de la population vivant dans des quartiers précaires. Cet article analyse les conséquences sociales de cette crise chez les habitants d’un quartier précaire de la commune de Mamoudzou, dont l’accès à l’eau est principalement garanti par une borne fontaine monétique. Les résultats obtenus, issus d’entretiens et d’observations, font ressortir que la capacité des habitants des quartiers précaires à s’adapter à la crise est freinée par leur enclavement, lié au contexte social et sécuritaire, et à leur précarité financière, qui les contraint non seulement dans leur accès à l’eau, mais aussi aux soins. La dégradation des conditions d’hygiène et d’assainissement est propice à la diffusion de maladies d’origine hydrique et exacerbe la précarité des conditions de vie.
