A critical gap persists in applying resilience theory and everyday urbanism frameworks that could better capture UA's adaptive capacities in informal settlements. Empirical research remains disproportionately focused on caloric access and social significance (70% of studies), neglecting integrated analyses of economic, environmental, and health impacts (< 30%). Such fragmentation perpetuates narrow policy approaches that overlook UA's systemic potential. Key structural barriers such as land tenure insecurity, spatial constraints, and policy contradictions are particularly acute in African contexts, where informal UA practices thrive despite institutional marginalisation. Three priority research gaps emerge: (1) limited empirical understanding of extra-legal UA's productivity and governance; (2) insufficient assessment of sustainability trade-offs; and (3) inadequate inclusion of non-farming community perspectives in impact evaluations. Addressing these through interdisciplinary, place-based research could transform UA from an ad hoc coping mechanism into a cornerstone of equitable urban governance under the UN's Sustainable Development Goal 11 (SDG 11). This article explores local epistemologies of pollution’s causes and effects in three films, which were researched and produced by local residents of Bar Elias, a small town in the Beqaa, which has rapidly urbanized as a consequence of mass forced migration to the area. We approach pollution in Bar Elias as a form of slow violence whose causes and effects become more available to understanding through local epistemologies. The films speak through visuals of dirt, waste and discolouration, as well as inter-generational and cross-community storytelling. We suggest that the filmmakers are thus able to reign in the complex and dissipating connections between polluters and pollutants that challenge slow violence by adopting a spatial lens on broad struggles impacting Syrian, Lebanese and Palestinian residents. This spatial lens foregrounds pollution as an outcome of Bar Elias’ location at the agrarian-urban frontier—a distinct political geography from which we analyze power relations that create pollution and expose communities to harm. Using a series of proposed energy-from-waste incinerators in Teesside as a lens, I examine how the UK's green industrial strategy legitimises ongoing pollution under the guise of sustainability, enabled by regulatory frameworks that define harm within narrow, scientifically provable parameters. This limited framing fails to capture the full scope of harm, allowing chemical toxicity to disproportionately impact marginalised communities. In this piece, I advocate for epistemic justice that expands how harm is recognised beyond measurable metrics and takes seriously community knowledges of the lived and embodied experience of industrial pollution in Teesside. This paper investigates the health effects of recurring floods on households in Greater Kumasi through a qualitative study involving 55 purposively selected household heads. The findings reveal substantial negative health consequences, including immediate and medium-term issues such as injuries, bodily pain, fatigue, skin infections, upper respiratory diseases, diarrhoea, typhoid fever, and fatalities from drowning. Additionally, the study highlights a high prevalence of long-term psychological distress among affected households. The findings highlight the under-researched nexus between flooding and health in SSA and underscore the need for more vigorous institutional enforcement of land-use regulations, public education and collaborative health interventions involving the Ministry of Health and other key stakeholders. To age in place, the design and maintenance of footpaths become pivotal for older men to access services, opportunities and goods in neighbourhoods and beyond. The paper combines interviews, observations, visual surveys and GIS methods to present the varied walking experiences of older men in Bengaluru and Dhaka. We take an intersectional perspective to examine how multiple socio-economic inequalities intersect and get amplified by infrastructural inequalities to disadvantage older men. Our findings highlight that walkability is compromised as older men go about fulfilling their expected roles and responsibilities. The risk of falls, crowded spaces, poor pedestrian infrastructure and ageist remarks limit older men from accessing public spaces. Globally, e-waste poses significant problems and threats to the environment, society and health of the population. In Ghana, this problem is more acute due to rapid technological advancement, lack of infrastructure, free trade policies and lack of sufficient coping mechanisms to manage e-waste materials sustainably. While the government and other environmental organisations have instituted numerous policies, regulations and strategies, very little achievement has been attained in addressing these problems due to high levels of poverty, weak enforcement of regulations and pervasive corruption. Using the conventional data collection approach of qualitative, quantitative and extensive literature review, this paper explored the underlying causes of the expansion of e-waste trading in Ghana, the implications of these activities on the environment and well-being of the population and the pragmatic solutions to these menaces. This paper established a complex interplay between environmental degradation in the context of e-waste businesses in Ghana. Additional findings established that while e-waste activities posed significant environmental problems that require urgent action, they are also sources of livelihood for a significant portion of the population in the country. These contradictions impact directly several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-Being), SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) and SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production). In this article we chart the variegated ecosystem of private firms that work closely with public and non-profit entities to transform metabolic flows of sewage into vital and valuable bioinformation, thereby creating new multi-institutional spaces of public health governance. We draw on literature in urban political ecology and political economy to ask: what are the emerging political economic actors, practices, and relations of wastewater surveillance? And how are emergent multi-institutional public-private partnerships and contracts transforming public health governance? To answer these questions, we use mixed qualitative methods to trace the field across North America, the Middle East and South Asia. Drawing on interviews, document and report reviews, financial reporting and observation at conferences, we find that these emerging public-private partnerships present concerning transformations in health governance where profits displace public health needs, proprietary technologies blackbox public health decisions, and vulnerable populations are experimented on for prototyping technology. The purpose of this paper is to investigate how precipitation and temperature affect households’ decisions on sanitation facilities that vary in their dependence on water for operation. To this end, we use household-level panel data from the Ethiopia Socioeconomic Survey in combination with location-matched, high-resolution weather data. Employing a panel fixed-effects regression model, the findings reveal that higher precipitation is significantly associated with an 18% lower (higher) likelihood of using improved (unimproved) sanitation facilities, respectively. Higher temperature has the opposite effect. Both precipitation and temperature have heterogeneous impacts: the effect of precipitation is significant only in male-headed households, while temperature affects the use of shared improved facilities in towns and urban areas. One potential explanation for the influence of precipitation is that heavy precipitation can disrupt access to piped water and sanitation networks by causing physical damage to infrastructure. Furthermore, higher temperature may accelerate the decomposition of solids in septic tanks, thereby reducing the need for water. How, then, can ecological infrastructure be calibrated with the specific realities of the global South's green informalities? What other socially just modalities of infrastructure can be learned from the vantage point of informal settlements? Past urban scholarship has documented the crucial role of urban agriculture in addressing food insecurity and poverty in the global South, yet the symbolic, collective and political dimensions of agricultural practices are absent from these accounts. Drawing from critical urban scholarship and feminist political ecology, and based on engaged research with a collective of urban farmers facing eviction, I argue that green informalities bring together dwellers and plants in an intimate entanglement in the everyday gendered politics of endurability and collective power-building at the settlement level. The article illustrates that the informal economic and political practices that constitute these green informalities are crucial for understanding grassroots practices vis-à-vis urban environments. We draw on qualitative research conducted with urban community gardeners in Cape Town, South Africa. Through interviews and observations, the study investigates how these gardeners engage in quiet activism to challenge the corporate food system. We find that community gardens are subtle but potent platforms for bolstering local food movements and fostering healthier dietary practices by cultivating and sharing produce. Quiet activism through community gardening offers a nuanced approach to challenging the corporate food system. The study highlights the need to recognise and understand varying levels of activism intensity and their implications for reshaping urban food systems. This article investigates the motivations and mechanics of small-scale land speculation on the outskirts of Mandalay, Myanmar. Based on a year-long fieldwork project in a resettlement ward in peri-urban Mandalay, this article finds that land speculation thrives in auto-constructed urban peripheries not only due to general expectations of urban growth, but also because individuals perceive these areas as safe from the eviction and violence typically associated with large-scale development projects. However, local land brokers and creditors profit from these transactions by leveraging their connections and capital. At the same time, poorer residents sell their land at artificially low prices and relocate to shrinking, subdivided plots on the outskirts. We show that these media built a powerful scaffold of legally sanctioned and scientifically backed good city narratives that reformulated the creek as a sacrificial zone for sustainable development, economic growth and logistical urbanism. Framed through the analytic of the littoral, we interrogate these developmentalist narratives and the technologies they used to contain or dispossess the fluid materiality of the creek. We then develop the idea of amphibious activism to describe the actions of backwater fishers to care for and resist the further degradation of their life world. We suggest that their activism expresses what Michel Foucault called a practice of liberty. By studying a breadth of natures and nature practices within this urban site (instead of focusing on a particular species or habitat), the paper illuminates the socio-material processes that undermine some natures even while supporting others, highlighting paradoxical responses to nonhuman agencies and resilience within the domain of ecological concern. The simultaneous analysis of Chennai's abundant and diminishing natures explains dissonances in urban natures scholarship, while offering fresh insights on more equitable approaches to nonhuman nature in human-dominated landscapes. Specifically, it points to the value of reconfiguring concepts and practices of nature, both within and beyond conservation, in ways that are attentive to the plural forms of nonhuman flourishing and experiential vulnerability. In this article I analyse the intersections between class and geographical scale to examine and criticize the class character of the sustainable city. I use a stratification approach to identify the irony of people with high carbon footprints tending to live in the ‘greenest’ cities or city districts. This is class in the sustainable city. A Marxist understanding—not least one emphasizing the capitalist class as a class—can help us grasp the class character of urban sustainability. This paper aims to contribute to the emerging literature on urban reform coalition-building in Southern cities by expanding our conceptual understanding of the form, purpose and content of coalitions. Through analysing the African Cities Research Consortium’s research reports and online research, the paper identifies key analytical dimensions of urban reform coalitions: form, temporality, goal, degree of formalization, class composition and key outputs. The findings suggest that reform coalitions aiming to benefit the wider segment of the urban population and disadvantaged groups, and reform coalitions that facilitate dialogue and knowledge exchange platforms tend to foster cross-class alliances. Nonetheless, building inclusive reform coalitions is predicated on a well-organized disadvantaged group. This growth presents challenges, such as land resource pressure, environmental degradation, unsustainable transportation, and disorderly urban land development. Transit-oriented development (TOD) and sustainable urban transit systems such as the Delhi Metro are crucial for addressing urban design, economic competitiveness, and quality of life by improving accessibility and reducing private vehicle reliance. This study investigated changes in land use and land cover (LULC) in buffer zones around the Delhi Metro lines using satellite imagery from 1997, 2006, 2011, and 2019. The findings revealed significant shifts from open land and vegetation to built-up areas, driven by increased real estate activity and property values near metro stations.
