            "abstractNote": "China has committed to providing equitable, available, improved, and safe water in its cities, and has worked to achieve ecological civilisation and the Sustainable Development Goals. Geographical research about water governance in China has largely focused on the state, market, and large-scale water infrastructure projects. There is still a limited pool of empirical evidence and theorising about how everyday infrastructures and practices shape uneven urban waterscapes in urban China. To address this gap, this paper mobilises the theoretical and empirical potential of everydayness as a lens to bridge urban political ecology (UPE) and social practice theory (SPT). Specifically, we interrogate urban water provision in Chinese cities and regions and draw on in-depth qualitative fieldwork in Changsha, China. We examine how centralised water provision crystallises and exacerbates uneven water distributions and insecurity challenges at the material, discursive, institutional, and practical levels. We explain how heterogeneous configurations of water infrastructures and practices fill the gaps of everyday water demand, but can amplify unequal allocations of water resources at the community and domestic levels. Finally, we explore how these water arrangements are closely intertwined with socio-spatial differences and co-produce dynamics of power and authority in urban waterscapes. These uneven hydrosocial relationships are internalised and normalised by excluding the urban poor and marginalised groups, pointing to the need to deepen understandings of the everydayness of hydrosocial geographies in China.",

            "abstractNote": "In recent years, extensive technology adoption has become a notable trend in China’s environmental governance. Although various analytical frameworks such as authoritarian environmentalism have been employed to understand China’s state-led model of environmental governance, the implications of digital technologies for local governance practices remain underexamined. This study investigates how technology adoption shapes China’s water governance at a local scale, focussing on the River Chief System (RCS) in a southern Chinese city. Our findings suggest that digital tools enhance accountability and further consolidate the top-down central-local relationship in China by promoting data-driven modes of governance but do not fundamentally alter underlying power relations or the broader governance structure. By examining how digitalisation interacts with the local operation of the RCS, this paper contributes to hydropolitical literature by shedding light on how small-scale technologies may recalibrate the dynamics of power and water. Beyond the Chinese context, this analysis enriches wider debates on digital environmental governance by demonstrating how “smart” water technologies can reinforce existing hierarchies in authoritarian settings and Global South contexts.",

            "abstractNote": "Water poverty, mostly expressed as the inability to afford the costs of water, is becoming a growing problem for European vulnerable households, despite universal availability of safe, secure, and reliable water. In this article and through interviews with 112 households in three cities of the province of Barcelona, we explore how water poverty manifests in the daily practices and coping strategies of household members. Findings reveal how these households, while not giving up uses considered essential, engage in demanding water-saving measures (e.g. reduced shower times; short washing machine programs or limited flushing) to maintain basic hygiene standards, imposing sometimes very strict behaviours particularly on children and teenagers. These, often draconian, behavioural adaptations are hardly reflected in the water bills which creates emotions of frustration and despair among respondents. Access to subsidies is also pursued with the help of non-governmental organizations and local services but lack of information, bureaucratic barriers, or legal status may hamper this option. The study also underscores gendered burdens, with women managing water austerity, and reveals concerns about private water management and inadequate water tariffs. Results advocate for policies addressing affordability by expanding subsidy accessibility and integrating poor household preoccupations into water governance. By focusing on lived realities, this research attempts to contribute to advance our understanding of water poverty in the global North, emphasizing the need for justice-oriented solutions amid economic and environmental pressures.",

            "abstractNote": "Weather parameters and soil moisture profiles were measured at an hourly time step during four agricultural years (September to October, from 2018–19 to 2021–22) in two Jessour (water harvesting cultivated terraces) of the same valley in Zmerten (southeastern Tunisia), characterized by an arid climate. One instrumented Jesr (singular of Jessour) was located upstream and the other one downstream. During each dry season, when crops experience water stress, the downstream Jesr had a higher available water content than the upstream one; in the downstream Jesr the soil profile moisture remained above the wilting point, whereas in the upstream soil surface, moisture levels decreased to below the wilting point. High accumulation/low intensity rains (causing saturation/excess runoff) flooded both upstream and downstream Jessour from 50 mm of cumulative rainfall, whereas high intensity/low accumulation rains (causing infiltration/excess runoff) activated the downstream Jesr from an intensity of 15.2 mm/h, and a combination of moderate intensity and moderate accumulation rains activated both Jessour from an intensity of 8 mm/h and a cumulative rainfall of 33 mm. We propose to set 50 mm of cumulative rainfall and/or 6.4 mm/h of intensity as threshold values for the activation of the Jessour system in Zmerten. However, significant soil moisture recharges can occur even without activation of the Jessour system.",

Cette crise hydrique bouleverse l’accès de l’ensemble de la population au service de distribution de l’eau ; les coupures sur le réseau entrainent une non-potabilité provisoire de l’eau. Cette crise frappe encore plus durement la part importante de la population vivant dans des quartiers précaires. Cet article analyse les conséquences sociales de cette crise chez les habitants d’un quartier précaire de la commune de Mamoudzou, dont l’accès à l’eau est principalement garanti par une borne fontaine monétique. Les résultats obtenus, issus d’entretiens et d’observations, font ressortir que la capacité des habitants des quartiers précaires à s’adapter à la crise est freinée par leur enclavement, lié au contexte social et sécuritaire, et à leur précarité financière, qui les contraint non seulement dans leur accès à l’eau, mais aussi aux soins. La dégradation des conditions d’hygiène et d’assainissement est propice à la diffusion de maladies d’origine hydrique et exacerbe la précarité des conditions de vie. À l’instar d’autres quartiers précaires du Sud global, cette crise hydrique se traduit par l’usage de sources d’eau alternatives non potables entrainant des contraintes et de la fatigue supplémentaires, dont les femmes sont les principales victimes.",

            "abstractNote": "The ravages and disruptions of anthropogenic climate change have sparked renewed interest in water and its social worlds. This review paper examines four key emerging directions in political ecologies of water: legal geographies of water, Indigenous scholarship considering water as a relational agent, geographies of everyday and infrastructural water practices, and the growing literature on hydrosocial territories and waterscapes. This work builds on earlier attention in the field to themes of privatization, urbanization, and infrastructure, but broadens its analysis to water's articulations into the manifold hydrosocial worlds through which it flows. Recent political ecological research has thus shifted from the relationship between the state and capital to diffuse its focus throughout the networks through which water comes to be known, produced, enacted, and consumed. I close by suggesting fruitful future avenues for research: namely, theorizing the political ecology of water across Global North-Global South and urban-rural divides, and investigating the ways that both hegemonic and counter-hegemonic strategies of water governance travel between hydrosocial contexts.",

            "abstractNote": "Numerous studies have evaluated maximum evaporation rates from open water bodies (Eo). However, relatively little attention has been paid to evaporation losses from residential swimming pools and outdoor water features. This study evaluates the combined impact of El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and climate change on Eo for 1859 water bodies with total area 173,500 m2 on Palm Jumeirah Island, Dubai. Historic (2010–20) annual mean Eo from open water was estimated via the Linacre (1977) equation to be 600 million litres (ML). Annual Eo projected under Representative Concentration Pathway (RCP) 8.5 by 2050 could be 627 ML under La Niña, 633 ML for neutral, and 675 ML under El Niño conditions. The present Eo equates to the water demand of 3000 people—or about 30% of the Palm's population—assuming 550 litres per capita per day. Moreover, replacing evaporated pool water with desalinated water contributes about 1.2 million kg CO2 each year. Such evidence enables authorities to reevaluate plans for future developments, including swimming pool density, and domestic water demand reduction targets under the 2036 UAE Water Security Strategy. Mandatory adaptation measures, such as installing pool covers, could be introduced to reduce evaporative losses. Further research is needed to estimate open water evaporation from the whole of Dubai as a baseline for assessing impacts of future developments and climate change.",

            "abstractNote": "Unsafe drinking water is a global concern that poses serious risks to public health, especially in developing nations, where tainted water can spread diseases such as cholera, polio, and diarrhea, which can result in several health issues and deaths. Children and immunocompromised people are the most vulnerable groups that suffer disproportionately from waterborne illnesses. Promising approaches to reduce the burden of waterborne diseases and revolutionize drinking water management are provided by artificial intelligence (AI). Public health authorities and water industries can improve safe drinking water distribution, treatment, and monitoring using AI-powered models and approaches. AI enables predictive modeling to support sustainable water management techniques, maximize resource usage, and identify problems with infrastructure and water quality earlier. AI, coupled with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and machine learning (ML) models such as random forest classifiers, aids in cholera risk prediction and enhances waterborne disease detection. Advanced AI models facilitate drought forecasting, reservoir optimization, and real-time water monitoring, improving water management and resource conservation. AI-driven systems, including predictive analytics and intelligent water distribution models, show potential for enhancing water safety, mitigating risks, and promoting sustainable water practices. However, several challenges must be overcome when incorporating AI into water management, such as concerns about data quality, infrastructure constraints, and ethical difficulties. Genetic sequencing and metagenomic analyses, which provide insights into microbial dynamics and water quality maintenance, are potential future areas in AI applications for water management. A balanced approach prioritizing equitable deployment, infrastructure readiness, workforce development, robust governance, collaborative efforts, ethical standards, and transparent regulatory frameworks, ensuring social equity and economic efficiency with current norms and policies, is required for AI integration to address diseases attributable to unsafe drinking water. These AI models are expedient to fully optimize WASH disease management to increase access to clean water, reduce the incidence of waterborne diseases, and advance global health.",

            "abstractNote": "In this article, we define the concept of water dichotomy as the simultaneous occurrence of water excess (e.g., floods) and scarcity (e.g., droughts) within the same location. This phenomenon poses significant challenges to health, socio-economic stability, and urban resilience. This paper proposes a framework for understanding and managing water dichotomy, drawing on case studies from the Metropolitan Area of São Paulo, Tokyo, Singapore, Cape Town, and Mexico City, each at different stages of this phenomenon. These cases highlight the importance of decision-making in mitigating or adapting to the dual threats of water excess and scarcity. The study also aligns the concept of water dichotomy with the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, identifying 32 out of 169 Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) targets that address the water dichotomy impacts in urban areas. The identification of the SDG targets was achieved through an evaluation of whether they related to water dichotomy, a expert consensus assessment and validation by an expert-driven literature review. Our findings provide a foundation for strategies aligned mainly with the Sustainable Development Goals 6 (clean water and sanitation), 11 (sustainable cities and communities), and 13 (climate action) and with recommendations directed at researchers, policymakers, and stakeholders to address the complex challenges of water dichotomy, promoting more resilient and sustainable urban environments.",

            "abstractNote": "Using the social determinants of health (SDOH) framework, this community-engaged study took place in Nogales and Naco, Sonora, Mexico, located along the US-Mexico border region. This study aimed to investigate the relationships between drinking water quality, perceptions, and socioeconomic factors that influence exposure pathways to metal(loid)s and create vulnerabilities. A mixed-methods approach was employed, combining environmental/health surveys and analyses of 19 metal(loid)s in 60 drinking water samples collected from public sources, private wells, and pipas. All 19 metal(loid)s were below the U.S. maximum contaminant level (MCL) and Mexico standards, except for one sample with an antimony concentration of 6.43 µg L−1. Twenty-three percent of the samples were below or above a pH of 6.5–8.5, and 100% and 98% of samples exceeded the MCL goal of lead and arsenic, respectively, highlighting a potential risk of chronic exposure. Participants generally had a negative perception of water quality, frequently describing it as intermittent, unreliable, dirty, or unsuitable for drinking. Consequently, many relied on purchased bottled water for drinking, cooking, and cleaning. Despite efforts to minimize exposure, some participants worked in occupations with heightened risks of exposure, and 99% reported residing near a potential pollution source. By applying the SDOH framework, this study goes beyond solely evaluating water quality by also exploring the underlying structures and systems that influence water access, usage, perceptions, environmental behaviors, vulnerabilities, and public health outcomes.",

In Paris, these elements interacted to limit and constrain access to water for large segments of the population for long periods of time. The very unequal distribution of property in the city is central to understanding water regimes in Paris and their evolution over time. This article analyzes the evolution of water systems in Paris from the mid-nineteenth century to the mid-twentieth century, considering access to water (and its quality) as well as the provision of sewers to remove waste soiled materials. Important social variations in the modalities of access to water within the city persisted for a long time. They were a consequence of choices made in organizing the distribution of water in the city.",

            "abstractNote": "Extractivist practices threaten water security and with it, people's health and livelihoods. Numerous communities around the world are engaged in the strenuous work of resistance against mining. Through our previous research, we matured a sense that women are a major force behind organizing for water security, particularly because they often refer to an embodied sense of urgency to act against ongoing extractivism to preserve their waters and territories. Yet, a systematic assessment of the state of knowledge at the intersection of extractivism, water, resistance and gender is still missing. Thus, the goal of this article is to provide an overview, through a systematic scoping review, of the existing anglophone scientific literature focusing on water insecurity due to extractivism and its consequent community resistance, with a particular focus on gender. We identify 30 articles with only six explicitly referring to gender. All studies have in common the understanding that water insecurity is a manmade problem, particularly due to extractivism. Resistance is a great revelator of politics, and this systematic scoping review shows that dynamics of depletion and sacrifice zones—both in environmental and human terms—cannot be understood without considering gender and intersectional relations. Yet, an explicit focus on gender as an analytical lens of water and extractivism is still lacking in the literature. Importantly, this systematic scoping review shows similarities across case studies emphasizing the need to interrogate the transnationality of these phenomena.",

            "abstractNote": "Water exhibits various politico-economic dynamic. Water scarcity can lead to conflicts, and it lies at the core of Iran’s environmental crises. The literature on Iran’s water crisis indicates the effects of this issue in terms of multidimensional environmental degradation, community disintegration, and state-society and intercommunal conflict. Approximately 28 million of Iran’s 85 million residents reside in water-stressed areas, a situation identified as ‘water bankruptcy’. The water shortage is experienced differently across the country. The plateau’s central regions, home to Iran’s major industries, are where the worst water deficit is occurring. However, regions with abundant water resources have also been impacted. These regions – known as ‘donor basins’ – due to intensive and disproportional inter-basin water transfer and other engineering interventions deployed by the Government to deal with the water shortage of the central regions, suffer from a different form of water crisis. A condition of asymmetrical and conflictual power relations between the state and subaltern communities in Iran’s peripheral regions has been created. This paper argues that this constitutes environmental racism, characterised by multilayered impoverishment and unsustainable development among communities in the donor regions.",

            "abstractNote": "Climate change poses a threat to water security where both current and future generations are concerned, with its accompanying impacts set to be greater in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). As a result, questions pertaining to climate change adaption in LMICs are receiving increased attention from academics and policymakers alike. It is broadly accepted that top-down approaches to developing resilience to climate change challenges have been shown to be limited and that concerted efforts need to be made to engage local communities in advancing adaptive strategies. Based on the above, we make two main arguments: (1) while there has been a shift towards acknowledging the importance of community-driven data in generating a broader and deeper understanding of climate change, far better use could be made of local knowledge and (2) efforts at community-based solutions to problems of resilience are currently limited by issues of capacity, specifically linked to the need for further education and training, and improved representation with respect to gender, class and caste (as well as financial support). To illustrate these arguments, we present evidence provided by rural communities located in two countries affected heavily by climate change: Ethiopia and Nepal.",

            "abstractNote": "À l’instar du grand Ouest burkinabé, le sous-bassin de la Haute Comoé dispose d’un fort potentiel hydrique utile pour le développement des activités économiques des populations. Cependant, avec l’amenuisement de la ressource face à l’accroissement des besoins, le partage de l’eau fait l’objet de rapports conflictuels entre les usagers ces dernières décennies. La présente étude vise à analyser le système de gestion des ressources en eau face aux risques de conflits communautaires dans le sous-bassin de la Haute Comoé. La méthodologie adoptée intègre l’exploitation documentaire, l’observation et les enquêtes mixtes de terrain. Les résultats révèlent que les conflits hydriques sont alimentés par l’amenuisement de la ressource du fait de la demande croissante des usagers et de la pression foncière. On note un déficit en quantité d’eau de 7 284 915 m3 (17 %) par rapport à la demande totale des groupes d’usagers (43 398 317 m3). Les reliques de formations ripicoles, jadis utiles pour la protection des berges des eaux de surfaces, ont régressé de 4,8 % au profit des savanes arbustives (0,9 %) et des cultures pluviales (0,9 %). Cette dégradation de la flore des berges liée à la forte demande foncière est perçue par 58 % des enquêtés. Pour y remédier, les communautés locales ont créé un Comité local de l’eau (CLE) assorti d’un dispositif d’allocation de l’eau. Celui-ci reste perfectible mais, avec les actions de restauration des terres et de protection des berges, il constitue déjà un outil pertinent de prévention des conflits et de partage équitable de l’eau qui peut inspirer certains CLE du pays.",

            "abstractNote": "Recent climatic changes and anthropogenic activities considerably affect regional water resources, particularly in water-scarce regions. The present study, therefore, aims to understand the changes in monsoon rainfall, potential evapotranspiration (PET), surface runoff, dam storage and groundwater in the drought-prone region of Maharashtra. The analyses of trend and step-change were carried out using standard parametric tests. The results were verified with the application of non-parametric statistical techniques. Notably, monsoon rainfall and runoff were observed to be declining. Exceptionally, the Yerala Basin witnessed significant increase in rainfall along with heavy rainfall events. Contradictorily, Agrani and Man Basins registered a notable decline in rainfall and runoff. As vulnerability to hydrological disasters is high, these basins should be carefully monitored. Although surface water harvesting brought a positive change in post-monsoon groundwater level, it was the main reason for a decline in runoff volume at downstream reaches, which led to intra-basin water disparity. The study area witnessed significant increase in groundwater extraction. Unfortunately, the misuse of government-subsidized schemes exacerbates groundwater exploitation and stockpiling of water resources. Moreover, the increasing rate of PET augments hydrological losses and amplifies water distress. Interestingly, almost all the hydrological changes were notably experienced during the post-2000 period. To cope with present and future water scarcity problems, it is therefore necessary to restrict irrational use and allocation of available limited water resources. The findings that emerge from this investigation may help to formulate judicious water policies and plans which could be implemented by the government, agronomists, water resource managers and farmers.",

            "abstractNote": "Water management is very significant because of changing the pattern of rainfall, seasonal variation of rainfall, sea level rising, water consumption pattern, acceleration of water quality and unavailability of fresh water in the coastal areas of Bangladesh due to adverse impacts of natural calamities. The aims were to investigate fresh water management with preparedness and adaptation strategies. Household data were collected from respective union parisad and total 338 households (out of 2789) were determined considering 95% significance level from three shoreline (Bagerhat), interim (Khulna) and inland (Satkhira) coastal regions of Bangladesh which distributed proportionately. Data were collected with self-administrated semi-structured questionnaire and three FGDs and analyzed with SPSS. Map was drawn by Arc GIS software. The study resulted that plastic bottle was dominantly used as conservation system for drinking (58.28%) and rainwater (44.08%). Besides, plastic drum, silver pots, earthen and ferro cement container were also used to conserve water. The mean weighted average index of preparedness of household and homestead agriculture is moderate (0.332) in inland and poor in shoreline (0.313) and interim (0.309) area. About 25.15% households satisfied with current water supply system. Individually, about 65.76% respondents adopted pond sand filter technology in the shoreline, followed by 16.90% (interim) and 37.35% (inland) area. Other adaptation strategies (rainwater harvesting, pond water conservation, potable jar water use, re-excavation of pond, boiling pond/canal water) were adopted by households and institutions with seasonal variations. Proper adaptation strategies should be taken with involving the local stakeholders for better performance in the study area.",

            "abstractNote": "Concerns about climate change are driving the development of novel technologies for mitigation and adaptation. Some of them include electricity generating and water harvesting based on atmospheric humidity. The latter is already commercial and can generate 50 L of drinking water per day per capita for dozens of people; however, besides energy, operation requires sufficient levels and durations of humidity and temperature. Our study focuses on the 33 megacities of the world, characterising the humidity and heat stress regimes during the last decade, using data from meteorological stations in their vicinity, and ranking them by their exposure and vulnerability to intense heat stress and their suitability to use these moisture-reliant technologies. Our findings indicate the dominance of severe heat stress conditions in megacities located in developing countries. Ranking the megacities according to the intensity and duration of the heat stress shows the annual, monthly and hourly courses. The five most affected are the cities of Chennai, Bangkok, Kolkata, Karachi and New Delhi. Seven megacities suffer continuous, at least 12 h, of intense heat stress during 1–4 months. The ranking also considered the level of income of the countries, hence their vulnerability. On an annual basis, approximately half of the megacities are highly suited for moisture-reliant technologies, among them megacities ranked as the top three in exposure to intense heat stress conditions—Chennai, Bangkok and Kolkata. When focusing on the humid season, 27 out of 33 megacities (82%) obtain suitable conditions for the new technologies and thus can benefit from them, at least part of the year. The implementation of humidity technologies for green energy and clean water could be of great help as our world gets more populated, warmer with higher water demand, especially for populations with insufficient infrastructure and resources.",
