Focusing on the initial processes of drone survey, GIS mapping and data-creation under the scheme, the paper argues that the creation of ‘high-resolution property’ is achieved not via the imposition of a new regime of perception. One coordinated through the speculative and ideological property-making practices of drone surveyors, GIS technicians, and local residents. This new regime of perception aims to extract individual ownership lurking within collectivity, subdivide collectivised lands, and cleanly link rural property to global asset markets and digital public infrastructures. This paper seeks to provincialise contemporary geographical scholarship on property technology, drawing from the diverse property systems and emerging technological apparatus of the Global South, and examines the lively and mediated sociotechnical practices required to convert hundreds of thousands of rural territories into high-resolution private titles and data-points. The land in the peri-urban areas is predominantly agricultural in nature, and it has been held by local farmers or landholders. This article aims to examine the nature of urban expansion and development from the perspective of the land rights of the local peri-urban landholders. To achieve this purpose, it has employed a case-study approach. As urban territory extends into adjacent peri-urban areas, the land rights of local landholders are expected to be automatically cancelled and transferred to people who can pay for a lease. This shows that very little attention is paid to the land rights of local landholders in peri-urban areas in the process of urban expansion and development. In particular, high rates of urban population growth lead to the transfer of land from non-market customary tenure systems to market-based, formal land tenure regimes on the edges of cities. The literature suggests that the conversion process from inalienable land to private property is highly contested, locally specific, and historically contingent. However, little is known about how this process affects a community. In the Kati cercle on Bamako’s peri-urban eastern edge with exponential growth in land registration, this village case study examines: (1) how residents secure livelihoods, and (2) how the advent of a land market affects livelihood strategies. Interviews conducted in 2011 in the village of Soro complement data collected in 1996 and 1987. The longitudinal data show increases in population as well as indicators of relatively stable livelihood strategies. Since 2001 only men in the chieftancy lineage and families close to it have sold land, and that land was of least value to them using the subsistence logic of grain production. Those authorizing land sales at the local level are also the immediate beneficiaries. Land privatization reduces access to resources for those with secondary land rights recognized through social relations in a customary tenure system. This study concludes that public policy in areas undergoing land conversion – especially peri-urban areas – should consider the impact of social differentiation in communities and how new land values "Large-scale land acquisitions (LaSLAs) have been a common feature of neoliberal transformation in which state entities facilitate foreign investments; yet the related governance dynamics remain poorly understood. This paper combines policy analysis and interview data to investigate governance dynamics of LaSLAs and analyses competing authority and power relations among national actors mediating land access for the case of Zambia. Our findings show that corporate interests, donor and regional support drive LaSLAs, but national factors predominate. While possibilities for LaSLAs are created by state institutions, the state agencies seeking to administer land-based resources also limit their potential through competing authority and agendas. The demand for land and water, accompanied by government and donor resources, heightens tensions among state entities over decision-making and creation of new frontiers of resource control. By focusing on state and non-state actors and their articulation in LaSLAs, our study shows that the top-down nature of governance of land, labour and water resources is problematic for long-term sustainable agriculture and rural development. Together these functionings encompass the financial, social, political and personal aspects of landowners wellbeing and are grouped under five heads: (i) being able to secure basic necessities for life, (ii) being financially secure, (iii) being able to protect oneself from discrimination, exploitation, violence, and assault, as a fundamental human right, (iv) being able to establish social associations and harness personal, familial, and societal interests through these associations, (v) being able to maintain and enhance self-respect and identity. The role of land in providing access to food, shelter, income, and credit, for the poor and agriculturists, is identified as the most valuable functioning. Financial security arising out of using or leasing land is another very important functionings, particularly for those who are financially dependent due to physical disability, poor education, lack of employment, social discrimination, and other reasons. Among other most valuable functionings of land is the financial autonomy and physical security it grants to the women and Dalits, who are vulnerable to homelessness, landlessness, and physical violence. This research also brings out the crucial role of land ownership in safeguarding self-respect and self-identity of the landowners. This threat is evident in the Peruvian Amazon, where local and national incentives for oil palm cultivation along with growing large-scale investments translate into accelerated oil palm expansion. Environmental sustainability of oil palm cultivation in the Peruvian Amazon is contingent on policy incentives for expansion onto already-cleared lands instead of biodiverse, high carbon primary rainforests. Previous research indicates that while industrial plantations use less land area than local smallholders, companies have a higher tendency to expand into primary rainforests. However, the motivations behind these differing expansion scenarios remain unclear. In this study we combine data from optical and radar satellite sensors with training information, field discussions, and review of public documents to examine the policy incentives and spatial patterns associated with oil palm expansion by smallholders and industries in one of Peru’s most rapidly changing Amazonian landscapes: the Ucayali region of the city of Pucallpa. Based on our satellite-based land cover change analysis, we found that between 2010 and 2016, smallholders utilized 21,070 ha more land area for oil palm than industries but industrial expansion occurred predominantly in old growth forests (70%) in contrast to degraded lands for smallholders (56%). Our analysis of national policies related to oil palm expansion reveal policy loopholes associated with Peru’s “best land use” classification system that allow for standing forests to undergo large-scale agricultural development with little government oversight. Located in the eastern periphery of São Paulo, Brazil, the proposed project uses riverbank naturalization to dampen floodpeaks and bring green space to underserved populations. Due to the presence of low-income neighborhoods on the river's edge, however, the project calls for the removal of roughly 40,000 people. Drawing from urban political ecology and contemporary concerns about environmentally induced displacement, I consider the conflicts over resettlement that mark the project. I analyze the project itself and situate it within a regional context defined by autoconstruction, regularized flooding, and insecure tenure. I argue that despite claims that the project will yield less risky lives for displaced residents, the form through which the project is being developed actually puts displaced residents in heightened situations of risk. However, such approaches have brought unintended outcomes, replacing small-scale economies and natural areas by intensive exploitation of resources with no clear improvement in local people’s wellbeing. To understand this, we go beyond a general political ecology framing to consider relations between sustainability and land tenure, focusing on the intersection of economics, ecology and anthropology to understand how land tenure, property and use play out on the ground. We draw together different concepts including bundle of rights, de facto and de jure resource use, property regimes, density-dependence and non-equilibrium theory. The significance of this three-discipline view is illustrated through a case study of the Pantanal wetland, Brazil, where conservationists, the government and the local population contest ownership of the Paraguay River floodplain. Government sought to address conflicts around tenure and access through a narrow view of property, which failed to encompass the overlapping layers of land tenure, property and use on the ground and only served to create further legal battles. This article concludes that a more complex view combining the three perspectives is needed in the case of the Pantanal, and in other cases of contested property rights, in order to resolve conflicting claims and foster sustainability. We dissect both the power plays involved between different groups competing for control of a valuable resource, and the legal frameworks which can and should provide checks and balances in the system. The more nuanced grasp that emerges of local systems of tenure and access, of how these diverge from western property concepts, and of their environmental implications favours a better understanding It first analyzes common practices in land-use planning as regards spatial justice, then explores the significant impacts of land-use planning on the quality of life and standard of living of Senegalese people. The approach adopted involved processing, analyzing and modeling a database of the population and the socio-economic and basic social infrastructures of the country’s different regions. By performing principal component analysis (PCA), we were able to place the variables in two main groups which explain the data. In recent years, large-scale land acquisitions have drastically expanded; it is unclear whether the commons are a preferential target of these acquisitions. Here we argue that the contemporary global “land rush” could be happening at the expense of common-property systems around the world. While there is evidence that common-property systems have developed traditional institutions of resource governance that make them robust with respect to endogenous forces (e.g., uses by community members), it is less clear how vulnerable these arrangements are to exogenous drivers of globalization and expansion of transnational land investments. In common-property systems, farmers and local users may be unable to defend their customary rights and successfully compete with external actors. We define the notion of “commons grabbing” and report on an exploratory study that applied meta-analytical methods, drawing from the recent literature on large-scale land acquisitions and land grabbing. Informed by political economy and political ecology approaches, we coded selected cases on the basis of acquisition mechanisms, claims and property rights, changes in production system, and coercive dynamics, and explored the interactions between the different variables using association tests and qualitative comparative analysis. In 2012, the Colombian government launched a large-scale social housing program to alleviate the housing deficit caused by conflict and furthermore compensate the IDPs for their losses. The principles of this initiative are in line with the wishes of most victim families, who prefer to stay in the cities to which they moved due to the conflict. The new apartments and houses are provided free of charge and are in high demand. That may help to explain the lack of success of another large-scale reparation program, land restitution, which promotes the return of displaced households to the countryside.\n\nBuilding on empirical qualitative field data, this article shows how the free housing program ‘cements’ the choice of displaced families to continue living in cities and further develop their post-conflict urban livelihoods and social networks, as opposed to returning to the depopulated rural areas and re-establishing agricultural activities. Ghana between 2000 and 2010. Our objective is to understand the degree of urban expansion relative to urban densification during this time frame, to understand the relationship between population growth and LCLUC at the census district level, and to explain the patterns of New Built LCLUC throughout this study area. During the study period 1.5% of the study area transitioned to Built, an increase of 56% Built area since 2000, while population increased by 33%. Most (84% of total study area) of this change to Built involved conversion from Agriculture al land use and occurred predominantly in suburban and periurban areas zones of the Accra and Kumasi metropolitan areas. While total population and amount of Built LCLU variables co-vary strongly at the census district level at the beginning and end of the study period, change in population and Built are less strongly correlated. grande échelle sont un phénomène récurrent dans l’histoire depuis la haute Antiquité. Cet article analyse quatre expériences historiques de ce genre : les latifundia de la Rome antique, les enclosures britanniques, les latifundia des colonies espagnoles et portugaises d’Amérique, et la collectivisation soviétique. Puis il les compare avec la vague actuelle d’acquisitions afin de mieux comprendre celle-ci et d’éclairer certains débats importants de politique publique et de recherche qu’elle relance. Ces expériences, historiques et actuelle, partagent un ensemble de caractères économiques et sociaux : petit nombre de bénéficiaires et grand nombre de dépossédés, exploitation de la terre et du travail des dépossédés, exclusion d’une partie d’entre eux dans certains cas, résistance, violence armée, législation favorable aux acquisitions, rôle décisif des gouvernements, discours légitimant. La vague actuelle d’acquisitions a cependant des spécificités : échelle mondiale, contexte de libéralisation des politiques publiques, rôle facilitateur des gouvernements et des organisations internationales, risque d’exclusion massive.
