FONAG was innovative in that it pioneered the use of trust funds in a voluntary, decentralized mechanism for financing watershed conservation. Since then, at least 15 water trust funds have been created or are under development in the Northern Andes, seven of which are in Ecuador. Ecuador's later water funds share many similarities with FONAG, but there are also important differences. This article analyzes the evolution of Ecuador's water trust funds since the creation of FONAG. It does so by comparing the development and effects-to-date of two of the most-recent Ecuadorian water funds: the Fund for Páramo Management and Fight Against Poverty in Tungurahua and the Regional Water Fund (FORAGUA). The article compares these newer water trust funds with FONAG and early payment for environmental services programs to identify four lessons regarding the financing of watershed conservation and related changes in community-level watershed management within Ecuador. The evolution of Ecuador's water trust funds highlights their ability to adapt to different socio-cultural and political conditions, including those that oppose the commodification of natural resources. In particular, high rates of urban population growth lead to the transfer of land from non-market customary tenure systems to market-based, formal land tenure regimes on the edges of cities. The literature suggests that the conversion process from inalienable land to private property is highly contested, locally specific, and historically contingent. However, little is known about how this process affects a community. In the Kati cercle on Bamako’s peri-urban eastern edge with exponential growth in land registration, this village case study examines: (1) how residents secure livelihoods, and (2) how the advent of a land market affects livelihood strategies. Interviews conducted in 2011 in the village of Soro complement data collected in 1996 and 1987. The longitudinal data show increases in population as well as indicators of relatively stable livelihood strategies. Since 2001 only men in the chieftancy lineage and families close to it have sold land, and that land was of least value to them using the subsistence logic of grain production. Those authorizing land sales at the local level are also the immediate beneficiaries. Land privatization reduces access to resources for those with secondary land rights recognized through social relations in a customary tenure system. Pour ce faire, la définition d'un cadre politique adapté est une condition sine qua non pour que la trajectoire du développement de la filière soit durable, c'est-à-dire favorise des modes de production à la fois viables économiquement (amélioration des rendements à l'hectare, lutte préventive contre la fusariose, etc.), équitables socialement (respect du droit des travailleurs, consultation des populations locales, etc.) et protège l'environnement (protection de la biodiversité, atténuation du changement climatique, etc.). I analyse the formation of COOPAVA through the lens of transition theory, their early years and experiments, transition to agroecological practices, and establishment of an alternative form of rural peasant life. Drawing from this analysis, I identify the major socio-technical factors shaping how COOPAVA has constructed an ecological development alternative in the context of the industrialisation and commodification of agriculture in Brazil and globally. Our analysis shows how the politics of scale and sociospatial positionality can help explain idiosyncratic shifts in food policies in new European Union member states that could not be attributed solely to institutional processes. To develop these arguments, our empirical analysis focuses on shifting agri-food regulatory frameworks for Alternative Food Networks in Lithuania. In particular, we analyze how and why Lithuanian authorities began changing and simplifying food safety and veterinary requirements for the production, processing, and distribution of small quantities of food products sold directly to consumers through Alternative Food Networks in the local market. We show how Lithuania’s positionality in regional and global markets contributed to the growth of the direct sales sector. Our analysis also reveals the agency of local producers and consumers in creating conditions for policy change. While there is a growing amount of research discussing technological aspects of the green economy, less attention has been paid to policy implications and governance aspects, especially in developing countries. There is an increasing emphasis on technological and market-based solutions to environmental challenges globally and in the developed part of the world. However, in developing countries, ‘green growth’ often implies transformed control over natural resources – under schemes that are often driven from abroad. Over the last five to ten years, investments aimed at increasing productivity in the rural agricultural sector in developing countries have become a focus area of the green economy, but various concepts of green have become confused. Such (mis-) interpretation of the green economy has consequences for implementation and outcomes of various ‘green’ projects. Drawing on governmentality as well as the concept of institutional bricolage, I examine how the green economy discourse and policy at the global level have been re-shaped and re-interpreted to fit the existing agri-business initiative of the Southern Agricultural Growth Corridor of Tanzania (SAGCOT), which has been championed as a model for green economy implementation in Africa. Upon decentering humans, however, too often posthumanist political ecologies have recentered humans and animals, indexing the enlarged category of “political actor” to narrowly shared traits like mobility or intentionality. Among other consequences, this tendency in political ecology’s posthumanism leaves the political agency of plants largely neglected. Political ecology suffers from this neglect, but the field can benefit from an integration of the insights of vegetal politics, a literature that traces the consequences of plant capabilities in more-than-human geographies. In this article, I model this integration—a vegetal political ecology—by examining human–plant partnerships in post-Soviet Kyrgyzstan's walnut–fruit forest, an ecosystem distinguished by the number of its trees that can be modified by horticultural techniques like grafting. I argue that the forest’s “graftability” incrementally undermines two different hierarchies, one typifying people–plant relationships and another that characterizes state-centered regimes of post-Soviet forest governance. Graftability thus allows Kyrgyzstani villagers and trees to act with more autonomy than they otherwise would. This antihierarchical effect is a small biological determinism conferred by the capacities of the graftable tree, and it has political consequences. Les résultats dévoilent qu’il serait intéressant d’orienter certains oléiculteurs vers les techniques préventives, certes onéreuses pour la majorité de ces opérateurs, mais qui ne produisent pas de margines. En effet, les oléiculteurs concernés par cette technique sont ceux qui ont des revenus trop élevés, ceux qui sont prédisposés à s’organiser dans le cadre de groupements de producteurs, ou ceux qui disposent d’un équipement adaptable. La technique de contrôle, représentée par l’exposition des margines à l’évaporation naturelle dans des bassins, devrait cibler en priorité les anciennes huileries créées avant la promulgation de la réglementation sur les Études d’impact environnemental. Aussi, des actions de collecte des margines devraient être orientées vers les huileries qui ne disposent pas d’espaces pour le bassin d’évaporation. Enfin, des aides devraient être apportées aux plus démunis pour la construction de ces bassins., The production process of olive oil in Morocco is dominated by systems that generate a by-product, olive mill wastewater, harmful to the environment. In this article, specific approaches are proposed to bring millers for adhering to the greening of this agribusiness. The results reveal that it would be interesting to direct some olive oil producers to preventive techniques, although expensive for the majority of these operators, but do not produce olive mill wastewater. Millers concerned are those with very high incomes, or those predisposed to organize themselves within the framework of producer groups, or those with adaptable equipment. The technique of control, represented by the exposure of olive mill wastewater to natural evaporation in basins, should primarily target the old oil mills established before the promulgation of regulations on Environmental Impact Assessment. Also, olive mill wastewater collection actions should be directed to oil mills which do not have space for basins. Quantitative data was used to select three villages in Zambia that had experienced pro-poor agricultural growth between 2002 and 2008. Les résultats obtenus montrent que M. oleifera est produit en association avec principalement la laitue (58 % des planches) et sous forme de monoculture (42 % des planches). Les opportunités de cultiver cette plante par les associations de femmes sont essentiellement de disposer de feuilles fraiches riches en éléments nutritifs en saison sèche au moment où elles sont rares, d’avoir des revenus monétaires pendant les saisons sèches, d’être des actrices clés de la filière Moringa au Burkina Faso. Les problèmes qu’elles rencontrent sont liés à la non-maitrise des techniques de production en planches par plus de 80 % de femmes membres des trois associations, à la non-accessibilité aux facteurs de productions et avec des techniques de commercialisation des produits toujours rudimentaires. À cet effet, le renforcement des capacités techniques des productrices et l’accompagnement technique des systèmes de collecte et de distribution de semences viables, de qualité pour elles et par elles-mêmes, pourraient constituer une grande valeur économique et stratégique pour les petites productrices en milieux urbain et semi urbain du Burkina Faso. Pour faire face à ces contraintes, les producteurs ont recours à des pratiques qui ne sont pas sans conséquence sur l’environnement, leur santé et celle des populations. L’objectif de cette étude est d’analyser les impacts sanitaires de ces pratiques agricoles dans un contexte d’urbanisation continue. Au terme de ce travail, cette recherche révèle que les pratiques agricoles observées dans les Niayes (zone agricole) de Dakar ont d’une part d’énormes impacts sur la santé des agriculteurs et des populations environnantes et d’autre part qu’à moyen terme ces impacts seront accentués par la forte urbanisation de la région. South–South cooperation is one of the instruments for engagement, and affinities between Brazil and African countries are invoked to justify the transfer of technology and public policies. In this article, we take the case of one of Brazil’s development cooperation programs, More Food International (MFI), to illustrate why policy concepts and ideas that emerge in particular settings, such as family farming in Brazil, do not travel easily across space and socio-political realities. Taking a discourse-analytical perspective, we consider actors’ narratives of family farming and the MFI program, and how these narratives navigate between Brazil and three African countries – Ghana, Mozambique, and Zimbabwe. We find that in Brazil, family farming has multiple meanings that expose contrasting visions of agricultural development as determined by history, geography and class-based power struggles. These multiple meanings are reflected in the disparate ways MFI is portrayed and practiced by Brazilian actors who emphasize commercial opportunity, political advocacy, or technological modernization. We also find that African countries adopt their own interpretations of family farming and MFI, and that these are more attuned with mercantilist and modernization perspectives, and less mindful of Brazil’s domestic political struggles. This has prompted a reaction from those on the Brazilian side fighting for an alternative agricultural development trajectory. The paper asks if a new paradigm for development cooperation is emerging, and argues that we must move beyond the simplistic narratives of either “South–South” collaboration or “neo-imperial” expansion of “rising powers” to look at the dynamic and contested politics of engagement, as new forms of capital and technology enter African contexts. Historical experiences in Brazil and China, as well as domestic political and economic debates, affect how interventions are framed, and by whom, and so influence what technologies are chosen, which investments are funded, and who gets trained. There are both political and economic drivers at the heart of these choices, but these are not uniform or uncontested, either in Brazil and China or in Africa. The Special Section argues for a focus on the encounters on the ground, moving beyond the broader rhetoric and generic policy statements. A key feature of Brazilian and Chinese engagements in African agriculture is the role of state–business relations in shaping and steering development, suggesting new forms of developmentalism. For that reason most countries are adopting various measures to reduce the impact of water scarcity on their agricultural sector and Ghana is no exception. Ghana's agricultural sector is the backbone of the rural economy in the country. The agricultural sector employs about 90 percent of the rural population and contributes extensively to the GDP of the country. But, low productivity and inefficient water use have resulted in a significant threat to the livelihoods of the rural population. The paper used a programing model named MATA (Multi-Analysis Tool for the Agricultural Sector) to achieve the stated objectives. The main objective of the study was to find out the impact of water-pricing policy on the demand for water resources by the farmers in relation to their cropping activities and income. The results of the study indicated that water-pricing policy has a negative impact on the demand for water resources in Ghana. But this impact happens only when water prices are increased significantly. However, if water prices are high it has a negative impact on cropping activities, farmers’ income, employment and crop varieties. Hence the study recommends that in order to at least reduce water wastage in the sector, it be proposed that a price (around 2 cedi/m3) might be of significance in order to make farmers conscious of the scarcity of water resources, and to persuade them to adopt water saving technologies without affecting crop distribution. Les activités non agricoles, pour importantes qu’elles soient, ne modifient pas ces inégalités.
