Rafin. (Euphorbiaceae) distributed in West Anatolia were determined, and biometric measurements were taken from samples collected from 42 different localities. This plant is a monoecious, annual herb, 28-63.50 cm. and stellate hairy. Its leaves are alternate and their shapes vary from rombic-ovate to ovate-lanceolate. The leaves are bifacial and amphistomatous. Their stomatas are of the amaryllis and parasitic types. The development of the root, stem, and leaves of the plant were observed when grown under various fertilizer, soil, lime and watering conditions, and their biometric measurements were taken. The plant did not show any sign of growth or development under shade and lime conditions. Fertilizer inhibited growth and development of the root while stimulating the stems and leaves. IBA and Pokon hormones were not effective in vegetative propagation. The interdisciplinary approach taken was the key to producing extracts that had been prepared following medieval instructions, and shows the blue/purple chromophore as the major dye in\n Chrozophora tinctoria\n fruits (shell). A multi-analytical characterization of its structure was made using HPLC-DAD-MS, GC-MS, NMR (\n 1\n H,\n 13\n C, COSY, HSQC, HMBC, INADEQUATE), and computational studies. The results demonstrate that the blue compound corresponds to 6′-hydroxy-4,4′-dimethoxy-1,1′-dimethyl-5′-{[3,4,5-trihydroxy-6-(hydroxymethyl)tetrahydro-2\n H\n -pyran-2-yl]oxy}-[3,3′-bipyridine]-2,2′,5,6(1\n H\n ,1′\n H\n )-tetraone, a hermidin derivative, which we named chrozophoridin. Experimental data and computational modeling studies show that this mono-glycosylated dimer is represented by two stable isomers (atropisomers). The natural dye extract has been used for dyeing natural materials such as wool fibers, cotton and silk fabrics. Many research groups are working in this area of developing better and optimized dyeing process. The drive has been to reduce energy consumption and to make the natural dyeing process ecofriendly by reducing the use of metal mordant. In the present study innovative dyeing has been done at 40˚C with the use of minimal amounts of metal mordant with tea extract. It has shown good dyeing results. Pretreatment with only 1-2% metal mordant and 5 % of plant extract (owf) shows very good fastness properties for cotton, wool and silk dyed materials. The role of metal mordant in conjunction with Camellia was found to enhance the dyeability and fastness properties effect in case all three types of material, which otherwise showed poor effects. Thus the net enhancement of dye uptake due to metal mordanting has been found to be 64-67 %, in cotton, 70-75% in silk and 67-72% in wool with respect to controlled samples. In addition to use as coloring agents, Dong communities have historically utilized dye plants for their value for enhancing the nutritive, medicinal and preservative properties of foods. However, the persistence of plant-derived dyes and associated cultural practices and traditional knowledge is threatened with rapid socio-economic change in China. Research is needed to document the ethnobotany of dye plants in indigenous communities towards their conservation and potential commercialization as a sustainable means of supporting local development initiatives.\nMethods: Semi-structured surveys on plants used for coloring agents and associated traditional knowledge were conducted in fifteen Dong villages of Tongdao County in Hunan Province of South Central China during 2011–2012. Transect walks were carried out with key informants identified from semi-structured surveys to collect samples and voucher specimens for each documented plant species for taxonomic identification.\nResults: Dong households at the study sites utilize the flowers, bark, stems, tubers and roots of 13 plant species from 9 families as dyes to color their customary clothing and food. Out of the documented plants, a total of 7 are used for coloring food, 3 for coloring clothing and 3 for both food and clothing. Documented plants consist of 3 species that yield black pigments, 3 for brownish red/russet pigments, 3 for red pigments, 2 for dark blue pigments and 2 for yellow pigments. In addition to dyes, the plants have multiple uses including medicinal, ornamental, sacrificial, edible, and for timber.\nConclusions: The use of dyes derived from plants persists at the study sites for their important role in expressing Dong cultural identity through customary clothing and food. Further research is needed to evaluate the safety of dye plants, their efficacy in enhancing food items and their commercial potential. Conservation policies and management plans are called for to preserve these ethnobotanical resources in a sustainable manner that supports local livelihoods while maintaining cultural practices.",
