"abstractNote": "In this paper we describe an approach for the computer-aided identification of Shakespearean intertextuality in a corpus of contemporary fiction. We present the Vectorian, which is a framework that implements different word embeddings and various NLP parameters. The Vectorian works like a search engine, i.e. a Shakespeare phrase can be entered as a query, the underlying collection of fiction books is then searched for the phrase and the passages that are likely to contain the phrase, either verbatim or as a paraphrase, are presented in a ranked results list. While the Vectorian can be used via a GUI, in which many different parameters can be set and combined manually, in this paper we present an ablation study that automatically evaluates different embedding and NLP parameter combinations against a ground truth. We investigate the behavior of different parameters during the evaluation and discuss how our results may be used for future studies on the detection of Shakespearean intertextuality.",

"abstractNote": "Text similarity measurement is the basis of natural language processing tasks, which play an important role in information retrieval, automatic question answering, machine translation, dialogue systems, and document matching. This paper systematically combs the research status of similarity measurement, analyzes the advantages and disadvantages of current methods, develops a more comprehensive classification description system of text similarity measurement algorithms, and summarizes the future development direction. With the aim of providing reference for related research and application, the text similarity measurement method is described by two aspects: text distance and text representation. The text distance can be divided into length distance, distribution distance, and semantic distance; text representation is divided into string-based, corpus-based, single-semantic text, multi-semantic text, and graph-structure-based representation. Finally, the development of text similarity is also summarized in the discussion section.",

"abstractNote": "Classical models of string comparison have been difficult to implement in XSLT, in part because those models are designed for imperative, stateful programming. In this article I introduce\n tan:diff()\n , an XSLT function built upon a different approach to string comparison, one more conducive to a declarative, stateless language.\n tan:diff()\n is efficient and fast, even on pairs of very long strings (100K to 1M characters), in part because of its staggered-sample approach, in part because of its strategies for optimizing enormous strings (> 1M characters). The output is qualitatively excellent: the function normally returns a minimal diff (shortest edit script) and the longest common substring. Released as part of an open-source function library,\n tan:diff()\n enables developers to incorporate robust text comparison directly into XML applications.",

"abstractNote": "The Text Alignment Network (TAN) is a suite of XML encoding formats intended to serve anyone who wishes to encode, exchange, and study multiple versions of texts (e.g., translations, paraphrases), and annotations on those texts (e.g., quotations, word-for-word correspondences). This article focuses on TAN’s innovative intertextual pointers, which, I argue, provide an unprecedented level of readability, interoperability, and semantic context. Because TAN is a new, experimental format, this article provides a brief introduction to the format and concludes with comments on progress and future prospects.",

Semantic interoperability (exchange of underlying meaning not just syntax) is the goal. Currently supported TEI cross-reference mechanisms are typically not interoperable without extensive human intervention. I offer three practical ways to make standard TEI cross-references more semantically interoperable. The first is the deployment of Canonical Text Services URNs. The second is informal agreements among communities to adopt shared Schematron rules. Both of these methods can be implemented right now; the barriers are practical not technical. The third method is stand-off markup based on the Text Alignment Network, a planned TEI-friendly XML format for the interchange of aligned texts.",

"abstractNote": "Intertextuality is the shaping of a text’s meaning by other texts. With roots in literary theory, the examination of this phenomenon has long been a fixture in disciplines in the humanities such as semiotics, comparative literature, classical studies and others concerned with the provenance of information. Julia Kristeva, who coined the term intertext, suggested, “Any text is constructed as a mosaic of quotations; any text is the absorption and transformation of another.” Such a broad framing lends itself to diverse types of communication — not all intertexts are traditional literary forms, such as allusion. Importantly, there are many practical examples of intertextuality we encounter on a regular basis. From Internet memes to plagiarism, all sources are worthy of rigorous study. The challenge is in scaling up the analysis to match the data sources of interest, many of which are the size of a digital library or greater — far more information than any one reader can process. Thus, in this chapter, we begin to develop a new notion of quantitative intertextuality, the study of intertextuality through computational means. Quantitative intertextuality draws upon existing fields within the digital humanities, specifically authorship attribution and text reuse detection. To place this new work in the proper context, we review the work in these areas, and explore where quantitative intertextuality begins to diverge from them.",

It promises to reveal the meaning of texts for original audiences, trace authorial influence, and illuminate an aspect of literary artistry. This article proposes restoring momentum toward the goals of intertextual study through an agenda of representing intertexts in a standard digital form susceptible to complex and systematic analysis.</p>\n\nTAPA was founded in 1869 as Transactions of the American Philological Association. "abstractNote": "This article examines a case study in Silius Italicus’ Punica using two distinct but complementary approaches to Flavian epic intertextuality: a methodological move to expand and further incorporate computational tools within philology, and a literary theoretical move to combine intertextuality and thematic interpretation. The case study focuses on the debates in the Carthaginian senate described in Punica 2 and 11, both of which Silius adapts from similar scenes in Livy while also drawing on Vergil’s Aeneid. Part 1 of the essay introduces a new tool for finding a range of inexact verbal parallels based on a bioinformatics technique known as sequence alignment. After comparing the method with two other computational tools, Diogenes and Tesserae, we assess our tool’s ability to detect intertexts in the Punica already noted in traditional scholarship. We then analyse a series of computationally identified parallels that have not been commented on previously and find that all three tools can reveal morphologically and syntactically similar phrases of apparent literary interest. Part 2 focuses on a feature of Silius’ triangulation of Livy and Vergil, the characterisation of the Carthaginian senator Hanno. Through allusions to Vergil’s Drances, Silius turns Hanno from a shrewd judge of Roman character and strength, as he appears in Livy, into a far more ambivalent, Quisling-like figure. Moreover, the effect of blending the two sources is to make more porous the distinctions between nationalities and other categories that structure the reader’s response to Hanno and to the Punica as a whole. In concluding, we suggest that the context in which these literary interactions take place - diplomacy and debate - itself figures the kind of negotiation taking place at a textual level between the various works and their worldviews. The conclusion unifies the methodological and theoretical parts of the essay under the rubric of “triangulation”, in part by drawing on the application of the term in the philosophy of Donald Davidson.",

"abstractNote": "This paper describes the first experiments towards tracking the complex and international network of text reuse within the Early Modern (XV-XVII centuries) community of Neo-Latin humanists. Our research, conducted within the framework of the TransLatin project, aims at gaining more evidence on the topic of textual similarities and semi-conscious reuse of literary models. It consists of two experiments conveyed through two main research fields (Information Retrieval and Stylometry), as a means to a better understanding of the complex and subtle literary mechanisms underlying the drama production of Modern Age authors and their transnational network of relations. The experiments led to the construction of networks of works and authors that fashion different patterns of similarity and models of evolution and interaction between texts.",
