His account of glassmaking with natron has since been corroborated by analyses of archaeological glass and the discovery of large-scale glass production sites where natron glass was made and then exported. Analyses of Egyptian natron have shown it to be a complex mixture of different sodium compounds, and previous experiments to make glass with Egyptian natron have been unsuccessful. Here, natron from el-Barnugi in the Egyptian Nile delta, a site which also probably supplied Roman glassmakers, is used to produce glass. The experiments show that high-quality glass, free of unreacted batch or bubbles, could have been produced from natron in its unprocessed form in a single stage, that larger quantities of natron would be required than has previously been anticipated, that the presence of different sodium-containing compounds in the deposit aided melting, and that negligible waste is produced. Quels réseaux ?", "creators": [ { "creatorType": "author", "firstName": "Touatia", "lastName": "Amraoui" } ], "abstractNote": "الملح في موريتانيا القيصرية و نوميديا. مصادره؟ استخداماته؟تواتية عمراويهذا هو الملخص الأول للمناطق الوسطى من المغرب العربي (الجزائر) و الذي يظهر الدور الرئيسي الذي لعبه الملح محلياً و كجزء من شبكات تجارية أوسع، و على مدى فترة طويلة من الزمن . اعتمدت هذه الدراسة على مصادر قديمة وحديثة - جغرافية ومعدنية و إثنوغرافية - و تستخدم البيانات الأثرية التي أهمل تحليلها في السابق عن استغلال الملح واستخداماته في العصور القديمة في كل من موريتانيا القيصرية و نوميديا. إن إعادة التقييم هذه تكشف عن مدى توفر الموارد المحلية: حيث كان الملح وفيراً، ويمكن الوصول إليه بسهولة، و يسهل حصاده من البحيرات المالحة أو صخور الملح .إن البقايا الأثرية التي يتم العثور عليها و بشكل منهجي بالقرب من مكامن الملح الموجودة داخل منطقة المقاطعة الرومانية أو على أطرافها، تؤكد أن السكان استخدموا هذه الموارد المحلية لاحتياجاتهم اليومية. وتظهر الدراسات الإثنوغرافية أن السكان أو القبائل العابرة كانوا - ولا يزالون - قادرين على الاستفادة من الملح المحلي كجزء من تجارتهم مع الشمال والجنوب . تشير أدلة العصور الوسطى إلى أن الملح الصخري من جبل ملح الوطاية (بسكرة) والملح من سبخة آرزيو كان يتم تصديرهما عن طريق البر و من ثم البحر، حيث يصدر الأول لتونس و الثاني لدول أوروبية مجاورة، ولا يوجد ما يتعارض مع حقيقة أن هذا النوع من الشبكات وغيرها كانت موجود بالفعل في العصور القديمة., AbstractThis is the first summary for the central regions of the Maghreb (Algeria) to reveal the major role played by salt both locally and as part of wider trading and commercial networks over a long period of time. The study, based on ancient and modern sources – geographical, mineral and ethnographical – uses archaeological data previously neglected in analyses on the exploitation of salt and its uses in ancient times in Caesarian Mauritania and Numidia. This reassessment shows the extent of local resources: salt was abundant, easily accessible and easy to harvest, from salt lakes, or salt rocks. Archaeological remains are systematically found in the vicinity of deposits located within or on the fringes of the Roman provincial area, confirming that the inhabitants used these local resources for their daily needs. Ethnographic studies show that the inhabitants or passing tribes were able to take advantage – and still do – of local salt as part of their trade, to the north and south. Medieval evidence shows that rock salt from the El Outaya salt mountain (Biskra) and salt from the Arzew sebkha were exported by land and sea respectively: the former to Tunisia and the latter to neighbouring European countries. However, this assertion is based on a misinterpretation of a single passage in Book V of the Halieutica of Oppian of Cilicia, which has been wrongly attributed to whaling. By examining the precise translation of this text and cross-referencing it with the other available textual, iconographic, and archaeozoological data, we propose to reconsider this interpretation using a historiographical, critical, and decidedly multidisciplinary approach. In particular, we show from the physical description of the animal and the technical details of fishing provided by Oppian that the poet more likely meant a large shark. We also address the contribution and limitations of the iconographic sources in this dossier, showing that the images handed down by the Ancients were much more imaginary and mythical representations of sea monsters than the reality. Le testimonianze letterarie suggeriscono per i termini “testum” e “clibanus” una forte sovrapposizione, tanto da far pensare. che essi definiscano in realtà il medesimo oggetto — la teglia da forno.\n\nAttingendo a recenti dati archeologici si può tentare di caratterizzare tipologicamente le teglie da forno in terracotta, ponendo in rilievo la loro forma estremamente tipica. Questo facilita l'identificazione di esempi da altri siti, spesso raggiunta attraverso il riordino del vasellame, ed indica il vastissimo uso delle teglie da forno in gran parte della penisola italiana, in tutti i contesti socioeconomici. Si propone qui una tipologia provvisoria fornita di riferimenti cronologici.\n\nCambiamenti nelle forme e nelle dimensioni di questo tipo di vasellame sono posti in evidenza e discussi, così come si nota l'apparente declino che esso sembra aver subito, a partire dalla fine del I sec. d.C, in alcune aree geografiche. Here we explore the current evidence for agriculture, trade and diet in southern Pannonia (modern day eastern Croatia) and what this may say about life in the region. The influx of new ‘exotic’ foods and technologies had a profound influence on this region. The limited archaeobotanical data suggests complex trade and local agricultural systems that allowed large towns such as Mursa , Cibalae and Siscia to gain access to a wide range of food items. The large quantities of pottery found not only helps us understand traded goods but also the local tastes and fashions, as well as to infer the types of dishes that could have been cooked.
