Design/methodology/approach - LibStats - an online tool - was used to make quantitative and qualitative assessments and to benchmark the results against those of other academic libraries in Australia and New Zealand. Findings - Beyond an introduction to the tool this paper explores the potential benefits it brings to the organisation in terms of information available to management and staff time saved. Originality/value - LibStats is a tool which is available as open source software and which facilitates the collection, recording, analysis and reporting of statistics in an academic library. Design/methodology/approach — The paper shows that the system discussed has been in operation for the past two years, making it a good candidate for a post-implementation review. Findings — The paper finds that the system has proved to be effective and efficient in the collection of reference statistics, eliminating manual tabulations and report generation. The ability to access the system from any Library computer has improved the collection of data on reference interactions occurring away from the physical reference desk. Research limitations/implications — This paper does not address the important issue of whether these statistics are the right statistics to be captured given the goals/objectives of the service. These wider management issues need to be explored further. Originality/value — This paper outlines an effective approach to collecting reference statistics and discusses many of the operational approaches and issues facing academic reference units. The taskforce was charged with examining the staffing patterns at the desk and developing recommendations to give librarians greater flexibility and to better respond to the information-seeking needs of users. These recommendations were based on statistics of desk usage, collected with the newly adapted online tool Desk Tracker, and structured interviews with library administrators. The taskforce was interested in how these stakeholders use quantitative data in decision making.
