"abstractNote": "Questions related to social justice are often considered frivolous or irrelevant in the context of people who come into conflict with the law. Young (1990, Justice and the politics of difference, Princeton University Press) has pointed to the importance of social justice, especially in societies where the dominant perspective of the privileged is regarded as neutral (and presumably fair), while others remain oppressed and excluded. We investigate the relevance of social justice in the treatment of women who are in prison. Based on more than a decade of practice and four years of research with women in one of Canada's federal prisons for women, we explore the question of social justice in the context of a recreation and leisure initiative whose aim is to assist women not only while they are incarcerated but most especially on release. The social recreation program is brought into the prison by a restorative justice community-based organization. Men and women from the community come into the prison to recreate together and, in that context of natural conversation, relaxation and dialogue, Circles of support may develop. If a Circle is formed, volunteer members then follow the woman into the community and support her efforts to live as a participating citizen on release. The relevance of the work of Circles in furthering social justice within a system that, despite recent potentially innovative approaches to incarcerating women, has struggled to move beyond traditional practices of punishment and exclusion, which tend not to encourage strong and healthy community life, will be explored.",

"abstractNote": "Reentry is an important public policy issue that fails to address America's race problem. Because the study of racialized subjects is not a neutral activity, this study draws upon the work of W.E.B. Du Bois in order to address important epistemological issues about the study of dehumanized individuals within academic research including public policy. This study elucidates the link between reentry and mass incarceration as outcomes of conscious public policy choices that are historically rooted in early forms of racism in the United States. The analysis of public policy begins with the post-Civil War era and ends in 2010, at the close of President, Barack Obama's first term in office. This study considers the institutional arrangement between for-profit prisons and the state, before addressing employment, education, housing, and healthcare, as important reentry issues. This dissertation highlights critiques of the reentry industry in general including, asking when does reentry end. The analysis of communities as physical and theoretical sites from which individuals are removed from and returned to through reentry are examined through geographic theories, before examining mainstream responses to reentry in Maryland and Pennsylvania. This dissertation considers examples of community organizing that provide frameworks for reimagining communities that are impacted by reentry, and offers suggestions for future research.",

It culminates with a call to the African American and Hispanic communities to partner with the penal system and lawmakers to find solutions to the devastating effects of increasingly high imprisonment, recidivism, and prison reentry rates of inmates of color on children, families, and communities.",

"abstractNote": "Criminologists have explored the reentry experience of formerly incarcerated adults, documented the pressing challenges of reentry, the correlates of recidivism, and the causes of desistance. Given scholars' focus on reentry to explain what factors impact criminal outcome, this raises the interesting question of whether and how such factors shape the process and outcome of reintegration. The current study uses official records and survey and in-depth interviews of 50 current and formerly incarcerated women to assess their accounts of what shapes reintegration success and failure. Results highlight the utility of an intragender approach and have import for policy aimed at women.",

"abstractNote": "The purpose of this article seeks to question the relationship of higher levels of educational attainment and the ability for successful reintegration into mainstream society for the formerly incarcerated. Specifically this article highlights societal negligence for individual success of the formerly incarcerated, opting for a corporatized exploitation of those in the reentry process premised on the socially constructed label 'ex-con.' Research surrounding labeling and reentry suggests once individuals are released from prison the social stigma experienced in society is a recipe for failure and reoffending. One way this emerges is in the form of hiring policies in corporate occupations, prohibiting the hiring of individual s convicted of a felony. Critical criminology suggests the class structure is in place for those in power to stay in power and keep those who are inferior in inferior social positions. Using both points of view as a framework, with the idea of corporate monopoly as a lens, allows for an untraditional critical perspective of the reentry process as a capitalist, for-profit industry. Questioning the role and intentions of reentry initiatives provides a general discussion for increasing success rates of those in the reentry process and reducing capital costs spent for incarceration. The specific focus of this article presents my experience of the reentry process.",

"note": "<p>This article focuses on a study done that examines the challenges that ex-offenders face when returning to a rural community. The study focuses more specifically on challenges surrounding housing, employment, substance abuse, and mental health. This paper addresses the need to develop policies that recognize the unique aspects of reentry in a rural area. The researchers argue that due to the size and location of rural communities, the residents of those communities have less access to private and public services compared to those living in an urban setting. With regards to housing, the researchers identified several issues including homelessness, parole/probation restrictions on locations to live and also the economic conditions in rural areas make it difficult to obtain safe housing. As far as the employment aspect, the authors discussed many reasons that this is such a difficult topic of reentry. The ex-offenders are not only lacking the skills needed to obtain employment and the stigma creates a divide between them and the potential employers, but the rural communities have less opportunities and lower wages than in the urban areas. Rural areas also often lack the substance abuse or mental health services needed for the ex-offenders. In addition to not necessarily having the services readily available, even if services were available, there are ways in which rural communities discourage ex-offenders from seeking help. At the end of each theme, the authors include policy recommendations.</p>",

"note": "<p>The number of people returning to communities after being released from prison or jail is increasing. This study qualitatively examines the reenter experiences of 43 male offenders in a small metropolitan community between March and June 2008. Interviews took place on the day they were released, the one-month mark, and a three-month mark post release. All of the offenders were asked to identify services or programs that they believed helped or could help reintegration back into society. The authors identified the first three months after being released as the most crucial in the reintegration process and gave them a good idea of whether or not the offender would recidivate. The offenders were asked a series of open-ended questions about obstacles and strains they faced throughout their reentry process. The researchers also asked the men about the effectiveness of programs and services geared toward reentry. Descriptive information was also gathered through the interview process where the researchers asked about their highest level of education, how much money they had available to them once they were released, where they stayed after their release, and whether or not they had any identification on them when they were released. The themes that occurred surrounding the questions about obstacles and strains included psychosocial adjustment, employment, money, identification and transportation, medical, housing, parole and sanctions, and drugs and alcohol. Five themes were identified in terms of the questions about the effectiveness of services that included faith-based services, group treatment settings, employment opportunity and assistance, medical care, and the development of offender-specific services. Included toward the end of the article are recommendations for improvements by the offenders themselves and policy recommendations by the authors.</p>",

This research advances previous studies done by examining the officers’ perceptions of social distance with their clients. The data used in this study was gathered from a voluntary self-report survey of state and federal Community Corrections Officers around the Seattle and Tacoma area. The survey collected data on the officers’ information and their perceptions of needs and challenges of the newly released offenders. A majority of these officers responded that social distance was not a problem for offenders’ successful reentry into the community. From the varied responses to this particular question, the authors further probed the officers for more details to explain their perceptions with the majority reporting that they believed the offenders used this as an excuse for their behavior once released. The officers generally believed this was a result of the offenders not taking responsibility for their own behavior. Officers noted that some of the needs and challenges of the offenders have to do with the lack of resources and programs available to them that actually have enough funding and can help. This could be a great starting point for how our group is looking at the relationships between ex-offenders and the officers in the community.</p>",

"note": "<p>The author begins by arguing that the prisons and jails are ill-equipped to help offenders handle the transition from incarceration to the community. Austin provides an overview of how the offenders get into the prison system in the first place. He also discusses the prison experience and adds that inmates are offered very limited services or programs while incarcerated and they lack the skills needed in the outside world. The author notes that there are five main categories of services provided to the inmates including education, vocational training, prison industry, substance abuse treatment (and occasionally other forms of counseling). The author states that across the board it appears that participation in the programs available inside the prisons is very low. After this discussion, the author notes the process of getting ready for release where some inmates are exposed to programs to assist them in reentry. The article goes into a discussion about a “harm reduction” model of reentry that can lead to more successful reintegration.</p>",

"abstractNote": "After three decades of passing laws and implementing policies designed to dramatically increase the nation's prison population and harden the conditions of confinement, there is a newfound interest among policy makers and criminologists in prisoner release. Using national data and a survey of eight states, this article examines the current “state of the art” of prisoner reentry. Not surprisingly, most state prison systems are ill equipped to ease the transition of inmates from prison to the community. A significant portion of released inmates pose minimal risk to public safety. Parole supervision increasingly results in ex-convicts' being reincarcerated for noncriminal behavior or misdemeanor crimes. For most inmates, reentry should be curtailed by either eliminating supervision or greatly shortening the period of supervision.",

"abstractNote": "The number of people reentering society after imprisonment has increased dramatically in recent decades in direct correlation with the growing prison population. As a result, empirical studies of prisoner reentry have also increased, but these studies typically focus on large urban areas and use quantitative methodologies. The current study expands the existing literature by examining qualitatively the reentry experiences of 43 male offenders living in a small metropolitan community. Participants were interviewed at the 3-month mark of their release from prison. They were asked about the strains and obstacles they encountered at three distinct time periods since their release: the first days of release, the 1-month mark, and the 3-month mark. These former prison inmates were also asked to identify any program or service that had helped or could help their reintegration into society. The results suggest that core obstacles and strains in reentry, such as issues with money, employment, and reconnecting with family, are consistent across geographical location. The study also produced some unique findings, such as psychosocial challenges being cited most frequently as obstacles or strains, the role of employment beyond its financial importance, and the negative aspects of religious components in reentry programs. Several policy recommendations relevant to the findings are discussed.",
