The Further Mathematics Network (FMN) was set up to enable access to such mathematics to all students and to promote and encourage students to study at this level. The FMN has pioneered the use of Elluminate, a well established web-based package, for live mathematics tutoring. Small groups of students meet online with an experienced tutor to learn new aspects of mathematics and to look at ways to solve complex problems. There are also extensive online resources to support the students' learning. in teacher education than ever before. In 2009, many instructors are attempting to emulate traditional instructional methods in the online learning environment as much as possible. Online courses are separated into two categories, (1) asynchronous; and (2) synchronous, depending on the nature of the online tool. Asynchronous courses provide learners with a flexible environment that is self-paced with learners accessing course content using a variety of tools such as CD-ROMs, streamed prerecorded audio/video web recordings, and audio podcasts. On the other hand, synchronous courses provide online learning environments that are very interactive and use web conferencing products such as \"Elluminate Live, Interwise, Wimba Live Classroom, Adobe Acrobat Connect Professional,\" and \"Saba Centra\". This study aims to compare asynchronous online environments and synchronous web conferencing environments and their effect on the achievement and satisfaction of students. Specifically, the study investigates whether asynchronous and synchronous online instruction result in differences in student performance, student satisfaction, or student perception of their technology skills. Forty-four preservice general education and special education students receive instruction in two different types of online learning environments (asynchronous text-based lectures using WebCT and synchronous web conferencing lectures using \"Elluminate Live\"). The results of this analysis suggest that both types of lectures are effective in delivering online instruction. In addition, almost three-fourths (30 of the 41 students) of the students indicate that they would rather take an online course that uses synchronous web conferencing lectures than an online asynchronous text-based lecture course. This finding suggests the importance of interactivity on student satisfaction in a course. This study supports the finding that students participating in an online course perceive an increased level of their technology skills. The demographic situation points to online distance education as a solution to support lifelong learning and to build competence in the region. An overall aim of all university education is what Hans Georg Gadamer calls \"Bildung\", what we in Norwegian call \"dannelse\" and what Richard Rorty has called \"edification\". A first problem to be addressed here is that in online distance learning some teachers find that is harder to support the development of the student's voice. Being able to express oneself and to position oneself in a scientific community is vital for a well-educated graduate. Another problem in online education has been the extensive use of writing as a means in the student's learning process. Writing is vital to academic education, but in online courses there is in general a danger of overuse. At the University of Tromso we have tested the web conference tool Elluminate Live. This is a real-time application, integrated in the University's learning management system (LMS), Fronter. The application enables synchronous oral dialogue, simultaneous sharing of texts, and so forth. I present our main experience with the use of Elluminate Live and discuss the extent to which this application has turned out to be helpful in developing the quality of online courses.
