This qualitative study explored the influence historically Black sororities had on the college experiences of African American women at a PWI using an intersectional social capital framework. The study revealed that the women, as Black women, positioned themselves lower than others in terms of social status; they joined historically Black sororities because of family, role models, and mentors; and, building community, academic pressure, and high standards were fostered through involvement in historically Black sororities and shaped their educational experiences at a PWI. studies have argued that in the large cities of developing societies, unemployment is often alleviated when displaced workers are absorbed into the small-scale entrepreneurial activities of the informal economy. The present study applies this argument to an analysis of women's self-employment in the U.S. South during the Great Depression. Census data show that in large southern cities in 1940, the unemployment of black women was meaningfully reduced by the self-employment of these women in domestic service. These data further suggest that dynamics of race, unemployment, and the self-employment of women in domestic service can be represented by an inverted-U-shaped labor absorption curve. It posits that community-based organizations in Black communities provide Black youth with critical social capital, which consists of intergenerational ties that cultivate expectations and opportunities for Black youth to engage in community change activities. Data for this study were collected from 3 years (October 2000-December 2003) of participant observation and interviews of 15 Black youth who were members of Leadership Excellence, a small community-based organization in Oakland, California. This study demonstrates how critical social capital is facilitated by challenging negative concepts about Black youth in public policy, cultivated by strengthening racial and cultural identity among Black youth, and sustained through ties with adult community members who help youth frame personal struggles as political issues. A Literature Review", "creators": [ { "creatorType": "author", "firstName": "William E., Jr.", "lastName": "Cross" } ], "abstractNote": "This paper summarizes the Thomas and Cross models on psychological nigrescence and reviews the empirical studies which have been conducted to validate these models. \"Nigrescence\" means the \"process of becoming black\", and as these models attempt to depict the various stages black Americans traveled in seeking a new identity during the late l960's and early 1970's, the models in effect speak to the psychology of the process of becoming black. A comparison of the two models indicates that they are not as similar as one might expect. The Thomas model begins at the point where the black person has already begun to change; consequently, it does not incorporate stages that are similar to the first two stages of the Cross model. While the Cross model has only one transition stage, Thomas's scheme has four. Only the fifth stage of each model, that of internalization, is similar. Both models, however, place considerable importance on understanding the dynamics of the Negro personality and/or worldview, and each ends with an analysis of internalization. A final section of the paper reviews eight empirical studies which have been generated by these models. It is noted that these studies have advanced the knowledge about the nature of the transition steps between the \"old\" and \"new\" black identity. However, in placing more emphasis on the analysis of the process of becoming black, the studies have not adequately discerned the structure, dynamics and functions of the new identity as it operates under \"steady state\" rather than change or crisis conditions. The empirical studies have produced three new research tools that will contribute to the sophistication of research on the psychology of nigrescence. Each instrument was evaluated on item development, reliability (internal consistency, test-retest reliability), and evidence for validity (in terms of content, internal structure, and relationship with other variables). Toward that end, we present an analysis of an innovative professional development activity with educators from a minority group in a social inclusion reform program who reflected on a news story of an event challenging the reform. Based on socio-cultural discourse theory, we posited that participants' interactions around the public story would reveal unique insights about implementations of the policy, and we posed questions about what those insights would be. Participants—174 Roma Pedagogical Assistants (PAs)—read, discussed, and wrote endings to the public story in a workshop during their professional training. Analyses of the public story discussions and original story endings by 24 groups of PAs emphasized the need for public authorities to enforce social inclusion policy in collaboration with a wide range of relevant stakeholders, including those in Roma communities. Participants reached this consensus through effortful argumentation about threats to integration indicated in the public story and their own deliberations about the need for justice for the entire community. This study offers evidence that policy subjects offer unique insights by interacting directly with one another around a relevant critical incident.
