"abstractNote": "This chapter examines the evolution of public dialogue on science and technology. It looks at the case of anti-genetic modification (GM) foods and crops in the UK, and how this provided the context for the institutional embedding of public engagement in UK policy. Then, the chapter scrutinizes the various ways in which dialogue is used in governance processes, and the claims for what constitutes “good dialogue,” before setting out a set of suggestions on how debate and dialogue can be opened up, and the substantive issues which it should address. The chapter reflects the practical and analytical experience of the authors in the UK case. However, reference to experiences of dialogue in other contexts are made, from other parts of Europe and beyond. The chapter also examines the issues, dilemmas, and opportunities associated with opening up dialogue and debate on science, technology and innovation.",

"abstractNote": "Cross-disciplinary collaboration increasingly characterizes today's science and engineering research. The problems and opportunities facing society do not come neatly sorted by discipline. Difficulties arise when researchers from disciplines as different as engineering and the humanities work together and find that they speak largely different languages. This book explores a new framework for fostering collaborations among existing disciplines and expertise communities. The framework unites two ideas to emerge from recent work in STS: trading zones, in which scientific subcultures, each with its own language, develop the equivalents of pidgin and creole; and interactional expertise, in which experts learn to use the language of another research community in ways that are indistinguishable from expert practitioners of that community. A trading zone can gradually become a new area of expertise, facilitated by interactional expertise and involving negotiations over boundary objects (objects represented in different ways by different participants). The volume describes applications of the framework to service science, business strategy, environmental management, education, and practical ethics. One detailed case study focuses on attempts to create trading zones that would help prevent marine bycatch; another investigates trading zones formed to market the female condom to women in Africa; another describes how humanists embedded in a nanotechnology laboratory gained interactional expertise, resulting in improved research results for both humanists and nanoscientists. "abstractNote": "The governance of modern science requires a heightened sensitivity to societal issues in relation to, and in particular within, the life sciences. Current opinion about practices, potential achievements and applications of genomics research oscillates between hope and fear; promise and realization; intended and unintended consequences; knowledge and non-knowledge; understanding and misunderstanding—on all sides, including scientists. Governments, research funding agencies and industry seem to have learnt, to some extent, that what was once fittingly called “organized irresponsibility” (Beck, 1995) must be transformed into ‘organized responsibility’ if scientific research, new therapies and diagnostics, improved health care, and new consumer products and services are to stand any chance of being accepted by society.",

"abstractNote": "This article looks at the history, varieties, influences on, and criticisms of reflexivity in science and technology studies (STS). It deals with the epistemic, aesthetic, practical, and political aspects of reflexivity in this context. First, the meanings of ‘reflexivity,’ as this term has been understood in STS, are set out. A brief history of the varieties of reflexive concerns in this field is presented, from Bloor’s explicit, yet limited, endorsement, to the full-blooded treatments of ‘the reflexivists’ (Mulkay, Woolgar, Ashmore) and beyond. Criticisms of reflexive writing from within STS (especially from Collins and Latour) are dealt with and responded to. A consideration of the internal role and status of reflexive work in STS and an assessment of the current state and future prospects of reflexivity are undertaken.",

"abstractNote": "In recent years scholars have begun to apply perspectives of the sociology of scientific knowledge to technology. At the same time, there has been much concern about how to deal, methodologically, with the issue of reflexivity in sociological (and historical) studies of science. This paper considers implications of the reflexivity issue for sociological and historical accounts of technology. Drawing on characterizations of technology (mainly by its historians), the paper develops several senses in which technology is conceived to differ significantly from science. Accordingly, assumptions and approaches, contexts and expectations associated with the sociology of scientific knowledge may be inappropriate to the study of technology. These differences can be used to gain insights into the reflexivity question. If, as we have done in science, we look to the activity we study for guidance about how to study it, we may find technology to warrant a different conception of the location and purposes of its analysts than does science - a conception of the studier not as an isolated knower, but as a socially and politically involved co-creator. In line with recent suggestions of Sal Restivo and Bruno Latour, our activity as STS scholars might then better be characterized as a technology of technology (or science), rather than as a science of science (or technology).",

"abstractNote": "Steve Fuller argues that the methods used in the emerging discipline of science and technology studies (STS) are potential tools for breaking down communication barriers that exist between disciplines within the academy, and between the academy and society. He contends that STS scholars have empirically established the \"constructed\" character of academic knowledge, and he calls for all scholars to acknowledge the rhetorical component of knowledge production. In this context, knowledge becomes a political entity that governs people and their effects, rather than a thing or a property. Fuller advocates and demonstrates the infusion of moral and political consideration into questions that had previously been confined to epistemology and the philosophy of science. Fuller calls this position \"social epistemology\", and here he offers a positive agenda of research, teaching and political action to deal with the complex problems of academic knowledge today. His four case studies reveal the social epistemologist engaged in delicate interdisciplinary negotiations between philosophy and psychology, sociology and cognitive science, political science and economics, and humanistic and social scientific approaches to the study of science itself. He shows that these negotiations have major implications, not only for the structure and function of the university, but also for the conduct of academics in science policy forums. In addition, Fuller challenges those sceptical of his programme, including cultural relativists in general, and Stanley Fish in particular. Finally, he includes descriptions of both a course of study and a projected utopia, to invite readers to participate in \"the end of knowledge\".",

"abstractNote": "Science and Technology Studies (STS) scholars increasingly engage with science and technology (S&T) practitioners, scientists, engineers, and the like. The actual dynamics of these engagements differ from one project, framework or school to the next. However, to be reflexive, such engagements need at some point to deal with the ambiguous relationship between ‘engager’ and ‘engaged’. In an attempt to disambiguate these interactive ties, this chapter takes inspiration from Vinciane Despret, a philosopher of science who has provided ethnographic studies of ethologists. It specifically draws on two of Despret’s arguments about experiments on animals, more precisely rats, and the paradoxical relationships to which they give rise. By means of analogy, it then illustrates the similar ways in which we, as STS scholars, might happen to frame our interactions with S&T practitioners. It argues that any experimental research dispositif necessarily implies a specific relationship dynamic with whoever is engaged. This should not be considered as an obstacle, but instead an opportunity for learning—yet only if the dispositif is open to protest. The analysis here took shape during an engagement study conducted at a large-scale R&D center in Flanders, Belgium. It is informed by ongoing involvement in a broader research project (STIR) that aims at fostering reflexivity among S&T practitioners.",
