DFAT Biography MELLALIEU - Pacific Issues Identification.
Peter Mellalieu, CertIwiEnvMgt, PhD, MPubPol, BTech (hons1) is Industrial Associate Professor of Strategies for Sustainability at Unitec Institute of Technology, Auckland. In this role he engages directly with social and industrial enterprise to facilitate improvements to enterprise, operations, innovation, and ‘wealth with green’ through his graduate and postgraduate action learning programmes.
As visiting international professor to the University of Botswana he conducted several capacity building programmes in entrepreneurial leadership for this developing economy. The insights from designing and leading these workshops lead directly towards his writing of a comprehensive strategic plan to establish a university-based centre for entrepreneurship in Botswana. (Mellalieu, 2006)
For several years he facilitated the introduction of a Young Enterprise Scheme (YES) and Education for Enterprise (E4E) programme in a low-decile Maori-Pacifica school in New Zealand that raised substantially the ambitions of the pupils not only for tertiary business education, but also academic education in several other disciplines. Peter has also taken the lead strategy consultant role for policy-level innovation studies in several agribusiness and biotechnology sectors. (Mellalieu, Vause, Coleman, & Kearns, 2015; Kearns, Saifoloi, & Mellalieu, 2014)
Peter completed a Master of Public Policy in Development Studies at Victoria University and a Certificate in Iwi Environmental Management at Te Wananga Aotearoa, in addition to a post-doctoral residence in systems strategy at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He was the founding Director of Unitec’s Master of Business (Innovation and Entrepreneurship) programme in 2000. (Frederick, Thompson, & Mellalieu, 2004; Mellalieu, 2011)
