mapping based on category theory as described by Rosen and Louie, and (2) relational holism based on modeling relations, as described by Kineman, provides an integral foundation for relational complexity theory as a natural science and analytical method. Previous incompatibilities between these theory structures are resolved by re-interpreting Aristotle’s four causes, identifying final and formal causes as relations with context. Category theory is applied to introduce contextual entailment algebra needed to complete the synthesis. The modeling relation is represented as a recursive four-cause hierarchy, which is a unit of both whole and part analysis (a ‘holon’) that relates realized and contextual domains of nature as complementary inverse entailments between structure and function. Context is a non-localized domain of distributed potentials (models) for existence, as contrasted with the realized domain of localized interactive and measurable events. Synthesis is achieved by giving modeling relations an algebraic form in category theory and by expanding relational analysis to include contextual entailments. The revised form of analysis is applied and demonstrated to examine Rosen’s M-R diagram, showing that structure–function relations imply adaptive interaction with the environment, and that contextual relations imply three forms of the M-R entailment corresponding with the generally known three forms of life; Archaea, Bacteria, and Eukaryota, which can be represented by their holon diagrams. acute lethality data for 97 chemicals was compiled to investigate two methods to derive health-protective concentrations for chemicals with limited toxicity data for the evaluation of one-hour intermittent inhalation exposure. One method is to determine threshold of concern (TOC) concentrations for acute toxicity potency categories and the other is to determine NOAEL-to-LC50 ratios. In the TOC approach, 97 chemicals were classified based on the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals proposed by the United Nations into different acute toxicity categories (from most toxic to least toxic): Category 1, Category 2, Category 3, Category 4, and Category 5. The tenth percentile of the cumulative percentage distribution of NOAELs in each category was determined and divided by an uncertainty factor of 100 to derive the following health-protective TOC concentrations: 4 μg/m3 for chemicals classified in Category 1; 20 μg/m3 for Category 2; 125 μg/m3 for both Categories 3 and 4; and 1000 μg/m3 for Category 5. For the NOAEL-to-LC50 ratio approach, 55 chemicals with NOAEL exposure durations ⩽24 hour were used to calculate NOAEL-to-LC50 ratios. The tenth percentile of the cumulative percentage distribution of the ratios was calculated and divided by an uncertainty factor of 100 to produce a composite factor equal to 8.3 × 10−5. For a chemical with limited toxicity information, this composite factor is multiplied by a 4-hour LC50 value or other appropriate acute lethality data. Rising atmospheric CO2, the Antarctic ozone hole, and Gulf Stream warm-core rings were all discovered by analyzing long-term datasets. Similar work continues on mapping evapotranspiration and snow water equivalent. In these “fourth paradigm” problems, data (especially data collected operationally) drive hypothesis formation. Making data available requires new discovery mechanisms and policies favoring data sharing. Cloud computing and array-friendly databases will help bring processing to the data. In the case of Marcellus Shale gas extraction, a water-intensive new form of energy production that is taking place in the state of Pennsylvania (USA), the perception of large gaps in government water monitoring efforts have motivated numerous civil society organizations (CSOs) to initiate their own monitoring programs. Using geospatial mapping, this study reveals that nearly half of the watersheds in the region lack government water monitoring, and CSOs are the sole source of continuous or frequent monitoring data in 22% of the watersheds. While many watersheds remain unmonitored, the gaps do not map on to demographic characteristics typically associated with environmental injustice.
