The writer argues that some of the dramatic works of African playwright Bernard Dadié decenter the discourse of European power and can be read as a form of resistance. She contends that, in effect, his plays insist on the presentation of a version of history other than the official one and the constitution of a memory different from the one constituted from the hegemonic position of the colonial or slave-trading power. She demonstrates that by appropriating the repressed voices of the colonized, the slave, and the African woman, Dadié's literaryimagination restores these figures to history and grounds them in the present. She concludes that Dadié's plays take on an ideological function and establish themselves as spaces in which national history can be read.

Three tenets of tradition are here called upon in an attempt to assess woman's position and role in a fast changing African society: feminine silence, motherhood as a duty, woman's occult power. There is no ideal portrait of the African woman in either play. The message of both authors is simply that if the present is to take shape, it can only build on the past. His plays, both written and performed at Ponty, include Les Villes (The Towns, 1933) and Assemein Dehyle (1934), five sketches which he wrote for the Folklore Cultural Circle of the Ivory Coast, an organization of which he was a co-founder. However, it is for his later plays that Dadie is best known: Beatrice du Congo (Beatrice of the Congo, 1970), Les Voix dans le Vent (The Voice in the Wind, 1970), Monsieur Thogo-Ghini (1970), Papassidi maitre escroc (1975) and Mhoi-Ceul (1979). A central theme which runs through most of Dadie’s plays is the preoccupation of his central characters with the pursuit and exercise of political power.

In Tel Aviv, he joined Yevgeny Arye in establishing the Gesher Theatre, where he has played leading parts in all of the company's productions. British director Howard Davies began his career in the theatre in 1968 as assistant stage manager at the Birmingham Repertory Company.
