This article reports on a quasi-experimental statistical investigation of the survey findings for this single question. Multivariate data analysis suggests that book discovery is very highly structured, with gender, subject discipline, and academic status offering powerful predictors of certain underlying behavioural strategies. A model of book discovery strategies is developed and this is used to help segment the survey population into those with high or low levels of dependence on formal library systems or nonlibrary-based solutions. Folksonomies\nconsisting of subject designators (tags) assigned by users, however, have one important drawback: they do not express\nsemantic relationships, either hierarchical or associative, between tags. As a consequence, the use of tags to browse information\nresources requires moving from one resource to another, based on coincidence and not on the pre-established meaningful or\nlogical connections that may exist between related resources. We suggest that the semantic structure of the Universal Decimal\nClassification (UDC) may be used in complementing and supporting tag-based browsing. In this work, two specific questions\nwere investigated: 1) Are terms used as tags in folksonomies included in the UDC?; and, 2) Which facets of UDC match the\ncharacteristics of documents or information objects that are tagged in folksonomies? A collection of the most popular tags\nfrom Amazon, LibraryThing, Delicious, and 43Things was investigated. The universal nature of UDC was examined through\nthe universality of topics and facets covering diverse human interests which are at the same time interconnected and form a\nrich and intricate semantic structure. Findings - The paper finds that the success of federated searching has proved valuable but limited to date in creating a one-stop shop search engine to rival Google Scholar; but the persistent value of the bibliographic databases sitting underneath a federated search system means that a harvesting search engine could well answer the need for a true one-stop search engine for academic and scholarly information. Research limitations/implications - This paper is based on the hypothesis that Google's success in providing such an apparently high degree of access to electronic journal services is not what it seems, and that it does not render library discovery tools obsolete. It argues that Google has not diminished the pre-eminent role of library bibliographic databases in mediating access to e-journal text, although this hypothesis needs further research to validate or disprove it.
