"abstractNote": "Psychological effects of aircraft noise exposure on children have only recently been addressed. This study took advantage of a natural experiment caused by the opening of a major new airport, exposing children in a formerly quiet area to aircraft noise. In this prospective longitudinal investigation, which employed non-exposed control groups, effects of aircraft noise prior to and subsequent to inauguration of the new airport were studied in 326 children aged 9 to 13 years. The psychological health of children was investigated with a standardized quality of life scale. In addition a self report noise annoyance scale was used. In the children studied, results showed a significant decrease of total quality of life 18 month after aircraft noise exposure as well as a motivational deficits operationalized by fewer attempts to solve insoluble puzzles in the new airport area. These findings are in accord with reports of impaired psychological health after noise exposure and indicate the relevance of monitoring psychological parameters as a function of environmental stressors among children, apparent in high density urban areas, hence the importance of this study to my current researh.",

"abstractNote": "The residents of Australia’s large, low-density cities have traditionally enjoyed good public health relative to the citizens of cities with higher dwelling densities in Europe and North America and this has especially been the case for children. Diseases such as rickets that are traditionally associated with poverty and poor urban planning have been absent from Australia until recently. Relatively good public health in Australia is associated with the private space afforded by lower density and unrestricted access to public parks, gardens, and recreational facilities. Planning for Australia’s major cities is currently focused on creating greater dwelling density to accommodate population growth. Densification is removing private space in the form of backyards but also public, community space. This article offers examples of urban consolidation in Australia and discusses the implications for child health.",

Immediately afterward, all groups worked in a noncrowded situation on two additional tasks, one involving frustration tolerance and the other involving quality of proofreading performance. Conditions of crowding had no effect on simple or complex task performance. In the postcrowding situation, however, significant negative behavioral aftereffects were observed for the crowded groups on the frustration tolerance measure, though perceived control ameliorated these aftereffects. There were no significant aftereffects on the prooofreading measure.",

Data on the quality of the built environment in 59 NYC neighborhoods were collected from the United Status census. Records of depression were also collected. Among 1355 respondents, in adjusted models, persons living in neighborhoods characterized by poorer features of the built environment were 29%–58% more likely to report past six month depression and 36%–64% more likely to report lifetime depression than respondents living in neighborhoods characterized by better features of the built environment. Living in neighborhoods characterized by a poor quality built environment is associated with a greater likelihood of depression, an important finding, which is taken as a core piece of the present research.",

"abstractNote": "Blue Mountains City is a unique urban area of 75,000 people, located along a narrow mountain ridge and within a world heritage national park, 60km west of Sydney, Australia. The Blue Mountains City Council is currently developing a regional city strategy to guide development over the next 25 years. This paper deals with the analysis of 269 entries for a children's story-writing competition in which the children had to imagine that they were adults in 2025 and write a story about what their home and city would be like at that time. The paper discusses the complex problems of consulting with children on strategic regional planning matters, and the results from analysis of these competition entries in the light of those problems. The most important issues for the children as a whole were the impact of traffic, the impact of urban development on residential neighborhoods, places for children to play, protection of the natural environment, and the ability to keep domestic pets. One of the most significant impressions emerging from the analysis is that children were far from optimistic about the future. The technique of story writing, despite some methodological difficulties in this particular case, was a useful tool for consultation with children of this age group and is seen as a possible positive way to include children more in the planning process and take their needs into account.",

Self-report data from interviews with a sample of mentally ill adults is paired with (a) observer ratings of housing environments, (b) census profiles of the surrounding community and (c) case manager ratings of clients’ functioning in order to explore the effects of supported housing environments on well-being outcomes. Well-being is operationalized here as levels of psychiatric distress, recovery orientation, residential satisfaction, and adaptive functioning. Results show that neighborhood level variables are the most influential predictors for understanding variance in well-being, with apartment level variables also contributing to understanding of housing environment effects. Implications of this study are relevant to the current line of research in that one's immediate neighborhood-level surroundings come to have much of an effect on both subjective and objective well-being.",

"abstractNote": "The built environment has direct and indirect effects on mental health. Highrise housing is inimical to the psychological well-being of women with young children. Poor-quality housing appears to increase psychological distress, but methodological issues make it difficult, to draw clear conclusions. Mental health of psychiatric patients has been linked to design elements that affect their ability to regulate social interaction (e.g., furniture configuration, privacy). Alzheimer’s patients adjust better to small-scale, homier facilities that also have lower levels of stimulation. They are also better adjusted in buildings that accommodate physical wandering. Residential crowding, (number of people per room) and loud exterior noise sources (e.g., airports) elevate psychological distress but do not produce serious mental illness. Malodorous air pollutants heighten negative affect, and some toxins (e.g., lead, solvents) cause behavioral disturbances (e.g., self-regulatory ability, aggression). Insufficient daylight is reliably associated with increased depressive symptoms.\n\nIndirectly, the physical environment may influence mental health by altering psychosocial processes with known mental health sequelae. Personal control, socially supportive relationships, and restoration from stress and fatigue are all affected by properties of the built environment. More prospective, longitudinal studies and, where feasible, randomized experiments are needed to examine the potential role of the physical environment in mental health. Even more challenging is the task of developing underlying models of how the built environment can affect mental health. It is also likely that some individuals may be more vulnerable to mental health impacts of the built environment. Because exposure to poor environmental, conditions is not randomly distributed and tends to concentrate among the poor and ethnic minorities, we also need to focus more attention on the health implications of multiple environmental risk exposure.",

To answer these questions, the Australian Research Alliance for Children and Youth (ARACY) produced a Report Card to compare Australian average, Indigenous Australian average, and international or Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) average for a number of measures of child and youth wellbeing. The ARACY Report Card shows that Australian results are average when compared to other OECD countries in most areas of child and youth wellbeing. Most importantly for nearly all indicators, Indigenous Australian children fare substantially less well than the Australian average and the majority of children in other countries. It is argued that community attitudes and behaviours toward children and young people, and our society's focus on wealth creation, are detrimental to children's and young people's wellbeing. The need for a better balance between economic progress and a socially and environmentally sustainable society is discussed, along with a strategy to better meet the emotional needs of children and young people.",

The current study tests whether greenness and residential density are independently associated with 2-year changes in the BMI of children and youth. The sample included children and youth aged 3–16 years who lived at the same address for 24 consecutive months and received well-child care from a Marion County IN clinic network within the years 1996–2002 (n=3831). Higher greenness was significantly associated with lower BMI z-scores at Time 2 regardless of residential density characteristics. Higher residential density was not associated with Time 2 BMI z-scores in models regardless of greenness. Higher greenness was also associated with lower odds of children’s and youth’s increasing their BMI z-scores over 2 years (OR=0.87; 95% CI=0.79, 0.97). Greenness, therefore, may present a target for environmental approaches to preventing child obesity.",

They are aware of differences in experience between such valued ‘places’ and other ‘spaces’. They choose the places because such places offer some key environmental attributes—spatial, physical, and social—that support behaviors that children want to engage in. Due to these attributes, behaviors in places are different from behaviors in other spaces, with the former being more purposive, social, creative, and dependent on particular affordances of the setting. This can be confirmed in a follow-up behavioral analysis of three pairs of most popular places and their counterpart settings. This observational analysis shows that settings children mention to be important to them are utilized more often (about twice as much) than their counterparts, showing a variety of behaviors, incorporating more intentional activities (as opposed to transient, short-lived ones), encouraging group behaviors (as opposed to single-person activities), and providing children with a sense of their own territorial play area. The study demonstrates that in children’s neighborhood environment, emergence of such important places is related to use pattern and there are some key attributes and core behaviors greatly contributing to children’s place experience.",

"abstractNote": "This study, informed by phenomenology and ethnography, explores urban children’s relationship with their urban environment: In what ways do urban children exhibit “insideness” in their sense of place? This study proposes “insideness” as a conceptual construct to understand urban children’s sense of place in its ecological and dynamic nature. Employing qualitative research methods, the study explores place stories of urban children who live in low-income, immigrant neighborhoods in New York City. The study finds that as children cultivate their sense of place, they construct “insideness” in their sense of place including 1) environmental understanding (i.e., contextualized, comprehensive, and critical understanding of a place), 2) environmental competence (i.e., knowing how to navigate and engage in a place),\nand 3) diverse, strong affective relationships with a place. Using “insideness” as a conceptual tool, this\nstudy discusses children’s emplaced understanding and active and dialogical positionality in the development of their sense of place.",
