El advenimiento de la llamada \"revolución electrónica\", a través de la expansión de redes globales, ha acelerado el uso de la GC en multitud de organizaciones, incluyendo las relacionadas con la biblioteconomía y la documentación. En el siglo XXI, la GC se está convirtiendo en una herramienta crucial para proporcionar un servicio dinámico y efectivo a los usuarios de bibliotecas.
