We propose a different approach by focusing on the history of library and information sciences, particularly on the case of Paul Otlet (1868–1944). Otlet’s attempts to integrate and dis- tribute knowledge imply the need for interfaces, and his conceptualizations are reminiscent of modern versions of interfaces that are intended to facilitate manual and mechanical data integration and enrichment. Our dis- cussion is based on a selection from the hundreds of images of what we may think of as “interfaces” that Otlet made or commissioned during his life. We examine his designs for interfaces that involve bibliographic cards, that allow data enrichment, his attempts to visualize inter- faces between the sciences and between universal and personal classifications, and even his attempts to cre- ate interfaces to the world. In particular, we focus on the implications of Otlet’s dissection of the organization of the book for the creation of interfaces to a new order of public knowledge. While today's special terminology of information science was not then in use, this should not obscure the fact that key concepts for information science as we now understand this field of study and research - and the technical systems and professional activities in which it is anchored - were implicit in and operationalized by what was created within the International Institute of Bibliography in 1895 and the decades that followed. The ideas and practices to be discussed would today be rubricated as information technology, information retrieval, search strategies, information centers, fee-based information services, linked data bases, database management software, scholarly communication networks, multimedia and hypertext, even the modern, diffuse notion of ldquoinformationrdquo itself. Inicia discutindo o retrospecto histórico a partir de uma perspectiva que considera-o como parte do processo evolutivo de registro e disseminação do conhecimento, posição esta discordante de autores que defendem o caráter visionário atribuído a Vannevar Bush, assim, a outros nomes importantes como Paul Otlet são atribuídos os primeiros discursos conceituais que se aproximavam daquilo que posteriormente concretizaria o hipertexto. Aborda-se ainda a importância do hipertexto como um recurso que possibilita uma maior relação entre os usuários e os estoques de conhecimento e apresenta algumas das suas características mais importantes como a interatividade. Prossegue apresentando sucintamente uma análise bibliométrica da produção científica da área da Ciência da Informação sobre o hipertexto feita a partir de periódicos brasileiros e bases de dados internacionais delimitados aos anos de 1990 a 2002, os resultados obtidos foram publicados em periódico especializado da área. Debate-se ainda a relação de uso dos recursos hipertextuais nos processos da informação (construção, comunicação e uso) apresentando uma revisão da literatura que inclui, além de debates conceituais, relatos de experiências utilizando-se o hipertexto. Met dit ambitieuze project wenste Otlet een 'wereldstad' te creëren die het centrale knooppunt zou vormen van de mondiale gemeenschap, of m.a.w. een soort hoofdstad van de wereld. Deze stad zou de centrale zetel worden voor alle belangrijke politieke instituties, internationale associaties en kenniscentra. Het centrum van deze stad zou in zijn visie gevormd worden door een instituut van een volkomen nieuwe aard; een kern waarin alle bestaande instituties voor intellectuele arbeid (de bibliotheek, de universiteit, het museum,..) zouden convergeren tot één centraal instituut die hij uiteindelijk het Mundaneum zou noemen. Gedurende een periode die meer dan twee decennia overspande, heeft Otlet onophoudelijk geijverd voor een concrete realisatie van dit project, en heeft hij voor de uitwerking ervan veelvuldig beroep gedaan op de expertise van verschillende architecten en stedenbouwkundigen. Eén van de laatste en minst gekende samenwerkingen die hij heeft aangegaan voor dit project, is die met Maurice Heymans.
