\nThe authors structured their analysis along three major categories system design; those categories are visual design, interaction design, and structural design.
\nI found this breakdown helpful in structuring the environmental scan in which I will be collecting design specimens for future reference and possibly emulation.
\nBeyond this I also found it the eight systems surveyed in this paper were excellent specimens for the environmental scan. According to the authors visual design is the placement of objects in the interface, and their look-and-feel.
\nWithin visual design the authors coded the systems in the survey using the following subcategories: vertical vs. horizontal layout, and the cardinality of data.
\nDefined as the design of the system’s designed connection between the visual design and the data that underlies the system, Interaction design was also subcategorized by the authors into varieties of selection cascades and selection cardinality.
\nLastly, structural design involves the data initially exposed and how hierarchical data is dealt with. Within structural design the authors investigated subcategories facet hierarchy, indirect facets, and single vs. multi- focus.
\nThe authors presented the three major categories individually and made note of their the primary research questions in each category.
\nHelpfully the authors included the intellectual patronage when of their research questions when possible. I found the description of interaction design subcategories clear, something to keep in mind when I attempt to describe interactions that others or I have designed.

Participants carried out both a puzzle task and a photo sorting task in two different modes: in a physical 3-dimensional space and on a multi-touch, interactive tabletop in which the digital items resembled their physical counterparts in terms of appearance and behavior.
