"abstractNote": "This qualitative, narrative inquiry study relied upon story telling to elicit key notions and themes in an attempt to understand the success factors, insights, and perspectives on leadership by the Asian American leaders in the community colleges. Critical Race Theory (Ladson-Billings, 1999; Vargas, 1999) is used as both frame and methodology to capture the individual experiences and voices of Asian American leaders in the community colleges by focusing on the racialized experiences of the participants' life and career. A convenience sample of five Asian American participants was used in this study. These participants occupied dean-level positions and above in the community college organizational hierarchy. Loosely structured interviews were conducted to gather data and a modified holistic content analysis approach was used to decipher the data (Lieblich, Tuval-Mashiach, and Zilber, 1998). Through the use of critical incidents in the re-telling of the participants' stories about their journey to leadership positions and their lives, the researcher is able to summarize a series of emergent themes, categorized into racial insider and racial outsider related themes. Specifically three emergent themes were discussed in greater detail and they are: (a) Asian American leaders in the community colleges travel a non-traditional career path to leadership positions; (b) community college boards seem to have a tendency to \"re-tread\" presidents, and thereby contributing indirectly and tangentially to a lack of Asian Americans in leadership positions in the community colleges; and (c) Asian American leaders seem to possess a rebelliousness that enables them to buck a trend, and not bow to parental or social pressures. The central storyline of the participants' success stories is one of strong cultural influence on the leadership style of the Asian American participants. The people-centric, collaborative, open, and team-oriented leadership style is embraced by all the participants and has enabled their success on the journey and on the jobs as leaders in the community colleges. At this critical junction of the community college history when the existence of community colleges is questioned because of a lack of financial resources, this type of leadership style could potentially be transformative, hence effective for the community colleges. In addition, the participants' success stories help to debunk the notion that Asian Americans are not suited for leadership positions. Possible future research on the topic of Asian American leadership is to measure the effectiveness of the Asian American leadership style on the health and maintenance of the community college organization.",

"abstractNote": "Race remains poorly understood and inadequately represented in library and information science (LIS) education. Educators tend to avoid the term \"race,\" preferring the more inclusive \"multiculturalism.\" Yet these terms are far from equivalent: the various dimensions of multiculturalism, including race, ethnicity, class, and gender, have different histories and different theoretical explanations. Four models dominate LIS research and teaching: science/technology, business/management, mission/service, and society/culture. Each has left its own racialized legacy, invisibly influencing the field's current concepts of race. Drawing on recent research into \"whiteness\" and racial formation, I show that although each model transmits an inheritance that perpetuates white privilege, each also carries the potential for positive transformation. Arguing that courses in all four areas have the capability to foreground race, the article outlines ways in which faculty, students, and library practitioners together can make curricular changes that contribute to the creation of libraries as \"nonwhite\" or \"race-neutral\" spaces.",

"abstractNote": "This article describes the challenges that women and women of color face in their quest to achieve and perform in leadership roles in work settings. We discuss the barriers that women encounter and specifically address the dimensions of gender and race and their impact on leadership. We identify the factors associated with gender evaluations of leaders and the stereotypes and other challenges faced by White women and women of color. We use ideas concerning identity and the intersection of multiple identities to understand the way in which gender mediates and shapes the experience of women in the workplace. We conclude with suggestions for research and theory development that may more fully capture the complex experience of women who serve as leaders.",

"abstractNote": "The purpose of this study was to describe and record the experiences of people of color in a community leadership development program. Selected people of color were asked to describe their experiences as participants in the American Leadership program in Tacoma-Pierce County in the State of Washington. The American Leadership Forum (ALF) is a national leadership development program that is dedicated to joining and strengthening established leaders in order to serve the public good . ALF has 13 chapters throughout the United States, one of which is in Tacoma-Pierce County. Ten graduates of the year-long program were participants in the study, all of whom resided, at the time of the study, in that local community.\nThe participants shared stories of their common experiences. These stories were compared to reveal the similarities and differences among them. While their personal backgrounds, familiarity with leadership theory, and careers revealed considerable differences, common themes emerged from the interview data. The research identified the following themes of their perceptions of the ALF participation: networking, relationships, community commitment, leadership development, personal transformation, family, connectedness over time, diversity, and community impact.\nThe emergent themes reflect the positive perceptions of the participants' experiences, as well as their disappointments and concerns. They also represent the attitudes and opinions that were most deeply impacted by the ALF experience, as evidenced by their stories.\nThe findings suggest community leadership development programs have the ability to: (1) Enhance professional networks and encourage relationship building; (2) Empower leaders by developing their leadership capacity; (3) Develop the image of a positive, centered self as a significant part of effective leadership.\nThe findings also suggest considerations for the planning of leadership development programs that include: (1) Time for reflection and sharing; (2) Relationship building among the participants of color; (3) Balancing competing needs for time (i.e., work, involvement in the community, and meeting family obligations); (4) A mentor component; (5) A learning environment that acknowledges and draws upon the diverse wealth of knowledge and experiences brought by the participants; (6) Time for meaningful dialogue on ethnic and racial diversity.\nRecommendations for further research on leadership development and ethnic and racial leadership are included. They include intensive studies in leadership development, leadership development programs, and promoting and sustaining diverse communities.",
