The distinction is discussed in the context of a central metaphor that likens computer use to communication between programmer and user. A number of limitations and benefits unique to gestural interfaces are described. It is suggested that gestural commands tend to be terse, common, unambiguous, iconic, and similar to the spontaneous hand gestures that accompany speech. The potential effects of these five qualities are outlined by summarizing selected research from cognitive and social psychology. Some potential applications are also described.",

"abstractNote": "This paper reports results from a paper and pencil study of the use of hand-drawn gestures for simple editing tasks. The use of gesture is of particular interest in an interface which allows the user to write directly on the surface of a display with a stylus. The results of the study provided encouragement for the development of gesture-driven user interfaces. There was very good intra-subject consistency in the spatial form of gestures used for an editing operation, and also, good agreement across subjects in the form selected for a particular operation. Subjects' reactions to the use of gesture indicated that gesture commands were perceived as easy to use and remember. Specific implications for the design gestural interfaces are discussed.",

"abstractNote": "Recent advances in sensing technology have enabled a new generation of tabletop displays that can sense multiple points of input from several users simultaneously. However, apart from a few demonstration techniques [17], current user interfaces do not take advantage of this increased input bandwidth. We present a variety of multifinger and whole hand gestural interaction techniques for these displays that leverage and extend the types of actions that people perform when interacting on real physical tabletops. Apart from gestural input techniques, we also explore interaction and visualization techniques for supporting shared spaces, awareness, and privacy. These techniques are demonstrated within a prototype room furniture layout application, called RoomPlanner.",

To improve the ease of learning and usability of these interfaces, we conducted an experiment to determine the gestures that people would naturally use, rather than the gestures they would be instructed to use in a pre-designed system. A set of 26 tasks with differing control needs were presented sequentially on a DiamondTouch to 31 participants. We found that the task of controlling robots exposed unique gesture sets and considerations not previously observed, particularly in desktop-like applications. In this paper, we present the details of these findings, a taxonomy of the gesture set, and guidelines for designing gesture sets for robot control.",

For them, we consider multi-touch and pen input on interactive surfaces as very promising. This fundamental work presents a user study investigating how people edit node-link diagrams on an interactive tabletop. The study covers a set of basic operations, such as creating, moving, and deleting diagram elements. Participants were asked to perform spontaneous gestures for 14 given tasks. They could interact in three different ways: using one hand, both hands, as well as pen and hand together. The subjects' activities were observed and recorded in various ways, analyzed and enriched with think-aloud data. As a result, we contribute a user-elicited collection of touch and pen gestures for editing node-link diagrams. The study provides valuable insight how people would interact on interactive surfaces for this as well as other tabletop domains.",

"abstractNote": "The use of hand gestures provides an attractive alternative to\ncumbersome interface devices for human-computer interaction (HCI). In\nparticular, visual interpretation of hand gestures can help in achieving\nthe ease and naturalness desired for HCI. This has motivated a very\nactive research area concerned with computer vision-based analysis and\ninterpretation of hand gestures. We survey the literature on visual\ninterpretation of hand gestures in the context of its role in HCI. This\ndiscussion is organized on the basis of the method used for modeling,\nanalyzing, and recognizing gestures. Important differences in the\ngesture interpretation approaches arise depending on whether a 3D model\nof the human hand or an image appearance model of the human hand is\nused. 3D hand models offer a way of more elaborate modeling of hand\ngestures but lead to computational hurdles that have not been overcome\ngiven the real-time requirements of HCI. Appearance-based models lead to\ncomputationally efficient “purposive” approaches that work\nwell under constrained situations but seem to lack the generality\ndesirable for HCI. We also discuss implemented gestural systems as well\nas other potential applications of vision-based gesture recognition.\nAlthough the current progress is encouraging, further theoretical as\nwell as computational advances are needed before gestures can be widely\nused for HCI. We discuss directions of future research in gesture\nrecognition, including its integration with other natural modes of\nhuman-computer interaction",

"abstractNote": "In this paper, we describe techniques for barehanded interaction between human and computer. Barehanded means that no device and no wires are attached to the user, who controls the computer directly with the movements of his/her hand. Our approach is centered on the needs of the user. We therefore define requirements for real-time barehanded interaction, derived from application scenarios and usability considerations. Based on those requirements a finger-finding and hand-posture recognition algorithm is developed and evaluated. To demonstrate the strength of the algorithm, we build three sample applications. Finger tracking and hand posture recognition are used to paint virtually onto the wall, to control a presentation with hand postures, and to move virtual items on the wall during a brainstorming session. We conclude the paper with user tests, which were conducted to prove the usability of bare-hand human computer interaction.",

According to the second parameter, gestures are distinguished into codified gestures, ones represented in memory, and creative gestures, ones created on the spot by applying a set of generative rules. On the basis of this typology, a procedure is presented to generate the different types of gestures in a Multimodal Embodied Agent.",

"abstractNote": "A rear-projection multi-touch tabletop display was augmented with hand tracking utilizing computer vision techniques. Touch detection by frustrated total internal reflection is useful for achieving interaction with tabletop displays, but the technique is not always reliable when multiple users in close proximity simultaneously interact with the display. To solve this problem, we combine touch detection and hand tracking techniques in order to allow multiple users to simultaneously interact with the display without interference. Our hope is that by considering activities occurring on and above a tabletop display, multiuser interaction will become more natural and useful, which should ultimately support collaborative work.",

"abstractNote": "This paper investigates using stroke gestures as shortcuts to menu selection. We first experimentally measured the performance and ease of learning of stroke shortcuts in comparison to keyboard shortcuts when there is no mnemonic link between the shortcut and the command. While both types of shortcuts had the same level of performance with enough practice, stroke shortcuts had substantial cognitive advantages in learning and recall. With the same amount of practice, users could successfully recall more shortcuts and make fewer errors with stroke shortcuts than with keyboard shortcuts. The second half of the paper focuses on UI development support and articulates guidelines for toolkits to implement stroke shortcuts in a wide range of software applications. We illustrate how to apply these guidelines by introducing the Stroke Shortcuts Toolkit (SST) which is a library for adding stroke shortcuts to Java Swing applications with just a few lines of code.",
